Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

Correct, but i had my external USB SSD formatted as NTFS and experienced issues with freezing and crashing. Tried exFAT, some issue. That is why i formatted to MSDos FAT32.
NVidia confirmed that FAT32 is as of this moment the only FS that works stable.

But issue of not being able to access the external USB SSD /Android/data/xxx folders over the network (SMB share) is still an issue even with FAT32.

Try adding media, I’ve had mine freeze up again since adding more media. Guessing the overnight scanning and cleanup causes the Shield / adopted to bugger out still.

Media added constantly by the DVR function daily and also personal media added, picked up by automatic scanning.

Currently everything seems to be operating as if there was no bad update. Very odd as before 3 days ago PMS was shutting down every night and I had to restart.

Plex freezes every couple hours. Only fix is to reboot.

I also have added new media, a new audio album and tv series and scanned library couple of times and everything still working stable.

So installed hotfix # 3 and was still getting lockups and needing to unplug some mornings. Turned off all scheduled overnight tasks and have been running without problems since. Setup is media on external USB NTFS formatted drive. Have also added movie and tv content without any issues. However we need a permanent fix. Waiting…

Not worth it, some apps will be buggy

Watching a movie and whole shield froze. Had to unplug to restart it.

Installed hot fix #03, server stopped responding overnight.

Again no solution even after latest patches.

Edit: and downloads are still broken: progress reaches the end, but then it says an error occurred.

Hot Fix #3 definitely helped me, but I’m constantly freezing and restarting multiple times to get it working again.

Just a little shout out to all
thanks for all the work behind the scenes on getting Plex running…. Just a bit twinkling to get as it was I’m one Happy customer

Nothing seems to work. Shield has been buggy since update to Android 11. Plex Media Server can not detect any external storage and even VLC has been buggy as well reading external drives, not displaying the correct files. I think the biggest issue is the Shield going to sleep after a few minutes… this pretty much renders the PMS useless. Google and Nvidia should just push out an official bug free update if they care about their loyal customers.

I’m surprised so many people have replied with positivity and everyone is trying to make it work as much as possible. Honestly, I think it’s insane that a PAID service with a monthly subscription is unavailable (or maybe available for some people using hotfixes and sideloaded apks). Especially since the upgrade to Android 11 on the shield was announced so long ago, even more since the permission changes have been notified by Google so long ago.
I’ve spent a bit of time trying to make it work, clearing cache of plex and PMS, I even sideloaded an APK.
But I’ve done that only because I’m an Android dev myself and I thought it was easy enough (and maybe a bit exciting). I think most people should cancel their subscription and find another solution.

Imagine for one second what you’d do if Netflix or Disney told you “hmm you know, you should go debug mode and adb install that unverified apk which you’ve downloaded from a forum, and then send us your logs”. As a paying customer, I just want my stuff to work. And I want it working since yesterday. No sideloading, no hotfixing, no googling for hours about maybe possible leads to a solution “hey it works on my machine”.

Plex Pass is not required for setting up a Plex server.
Plex Pass unlocks additional features that might give additional benefits (such as hardware transcoding and not having to pay extra to unlock the mobile app).
You can absolutely setup a Plex server without having a Plex Pass, as many people do by show of users on this forum that do not have Plex Pass but have servers setup.

Your example of Netflix and Disney is not the same as you need to pay for those services in order to be able to actually use them, which again, with Plex you don’t.

Any developer from plex still watching this topic? Any solution in foresight?

I’d still like to know what the test rigs for the Plex developers are (what brand / model external HD and what file format) which have been unable to reproduce the problems many here are experiencing.

I’d spend a few hundred to buy the same drive if it worked so solid that the crashing problems can’t even be intentionally reproduced.

No actual Android dev would find sideloading an APK exciting, it’s merely a task required for app installation, outside of an app store.

Plex can not modify the way the latest Android update on the Nvidia Shield handles permissions for external devices. The fact that Nvidia markets “Plex Media Server built-in” to sell their product and breaks permissions for the Plex Media Server to run on their hardware falls squarely on Nvidia.

I am also disappointed in Nvidia’s lack of testing before pushing a new version of Android to the Nvidia Shield. The latest update caused problems for Kodi, Plex, and Emby using external drives. You have a right to be frustrated but blaming Plex for Nvidia’s lack of testing is not helpful in the least.

Yes the PMS is a free service but it is a service that is bundled with the Shield & most likely the main reason anyone would buy one so surely it should work no?

I paid the fee to use Plex’s DVR feature which involved extra purchases (SSD drive, TV tuner etc) so after that outlay for a promised service I reserve the right to be royally p***ed off when it doesn’t work for a month.

Without this the Shield does nothing that my TV, phone & games console can’t do equally as well if not better.

Over 1k responses in this thread yet Plex don’t deem this worthy of regular responses - if I received 1057 complaints in my job but failed to act on them I would expect to be unemployed by now.

This is going on to long, hot fixes and work arounds all well and good. But we want what we have all paid for.

My server had been working fine for the past week or so but crashed last night. Had installed the Hotfixes and 5448 version, was able to scan libraries and make changes, now it’s showing nothing under PMS in Plex settings.

I’ve tried rebooting, clearing cache on both the Plex/PMS. It updated the Plex app Feb 4th, wondering if going back to the previous version could fix, but is there a way to install without losing my libraries/setup a new server?
