Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

Here’s how I got it to work.

  1. Factory Reset
  2. Connect Network Drives for media
  3. Setup Plex, no folders, no media.
  4. Go to Desktop > Format USB as NTSC
  5. Add Movie folder to PMS, start Scan and quickly cancel so only a couple of movies are added.
  6. Go to Shield > Insert USB Drive > Format as adopted storage (interal)
  7. Go To Plex Client > Move library to external, takes seconds as there’s no metadata yet
  8. Scan for new media.

This has worked since then and on successive days i scanned in the TV and then my Music folders and it’s been good to go.

The only thing doesn’t work is connecting to the USB drive over the network to be able to pull the backups (actually, you can connect to the USB but not the android data folder and the permissions bug means you can copy stuff to the drive but you can’t see it when you’re on the shield).

Hope that helps.

No Hotfixes or PMS updates.

I have a USB SanDisk ExtremePro 128Gb flash drive

Sure, a fix would be nice but I imagine that’s hard to control depending on the complexity of the issue.
What I would really like are regular updates as to the progress.

So far:

  • Average users that are just going off of the release versions of Plex and Shield Experience haven’t seen the needle move in a month. They’re effectively sitting on broken Shield Plex servers.

  • Users that have tried all imaginable combinations of applying the hotfixes and sideloading various releases of the Plex app are still seeing critical failures.

You need to provide updates listing known bugs and their expected turnarounds.
Doubly so if a good chunk of your user-base is not able to even run the most recent official release of your software.

I join those asking for an update from folks at Plex on the status and advancements on these issues. I have not messed around with hotfixes and “tentative” apk’s, and it looks like that those who had the time and will to do so still experience a lot of critical bugs.
It’s more than a month now that we have been forced out of the platform and I think that regular updates from the staff on this situation is the minimum that can be asked and it’s owed to your customers.

Still having issues, but seems it is the shield hot fix 3 more than Plex. I’ve continued sending reports with my Tyrantii name attached.

Shield is still losing access to the data folders, and now it seems to be both adopted storage and internal storage, as when I go to start any apps in the morning the Shield won’t boot them and they hang on their splash screens. PMS stops working, but further YouTube, Twitch, D+, ect hang and will not load as well. No access to data folders. Reboot, everything works for about 24 hours.

Have the logs been helpful at all? Any luck with a stable Hotfix (4)?

Ugh, I feel for you. I’ve had the Nvidia Shield for over a year now running as my PMS. I can’t imagine buying it and having it shut down in such a short time. FYI - you don’t need Plex Pass to run the server or view files from a client. You do need it to use their Plexamp application which is for streaming music. I’m stuck waiting for the hotfix myself.

I suspect your solution worked as you essentially mounted the storage as internal. I have two external drives hooked up (both 4 TB) that I want to keep as external storage. Hopefully when the hotfix comes through ( I applied for it today) is should solve my problems.

Funny thing I noticed plex keeps reverting to power optimization every time I power off the shield and replug and restart the shield - hhmmm anyone notice this?

Sadly I don’t have the patience for this. I found it hit and miss on the Shield ever since I installed it a couple of years ago at the best of times! It would repeatedly drop offline if I didn’t touch it for a few days.
Now installed Plex server on an unused Windows laptop with my HD attached and stream from that instead. Hopefully this gets fixed for you guys but for me, I’ve lost faith in the Plex/Shield server.

Not quite. My storage is an external NAS. The adopted storage (internal) is purely for the metadata/database.

Any word on when the official fixes (not hotfixes that need to be sideloaded) will roll out? This is going on way too long

I hope that Plex has enough respect for there paying clients to respond here in this forum where we are .
It has been over one month without a workable solution either from NVidia or Plex maybe its time they both take some lessons in how to handle there paying clients or maybe its time some people are gonna make a legal action to find out why nobody responds to there paying custumers or is Plex gonna start refunding people with Plex passes for not being able to use there service ???

No longer freezing after changing “Scheduled Tasks” and “Library” settings.
(Applied latest hotfix, did not sideload PMS, did not clear out any cache etc…)

I put options to “never” Generate video preview, Generate chapter thumbnails and Analyze audio tracts for loudness. basically unchecked as much as I could and changed the time from 2:00am to 12:00pm so see if my freezing issue was related to some scheduled tasks. And glad to say my shield did not freeze up at 2:00am nor did it freeze up at 12:00pm and in the alerts I can see the task to partially scan my library worked as expected.

Hope this helps… Until there is a fix, I will perform my full scans manually…
So this is working for now; before would freeze and would only be restored after restarting the shield by the power (cold reboot)

No, just don’t have anything to share.

This is impressive. Bricked for over a month, have never experienced such a long outage on a service/app/device. I understand softdev is hard. But over a month? Its starting to feel like this is low on both nvidia and plex dev priorities.

Would be happy to hear otherwise.

Is this the official Plex response to a complaint about the service we have be getting.

Thx a lot Plex!
Congrats with the new 20 million dollar investment in plex. I hope that helps to fix some issues… SEC FORM D

I appreciate that software development is challenging, but we’re going on one month now without any clarity on when these issues will be resolved. I just cancelled my Plex Pass renewal because of this. I wasn’t expecting anything to be fixed overnight, but after a month, I was expecting a detailed explanation of the issue and a rough timeline of when fixes are expected to be ready. If there’s additional info you need from the community, please clarify how we can help. If this isn’t the canonical place for updates on PMS + Shield w/ Android 11, where should we be looking for updates about this issue?

LOL. Might as well celebrate. Wining and complaining isn’t going to get us anywhere.
Not much we can do but to wait. Yes I am frustrated, but I am sure they’ll figure it out eventually.

Happy 1 month anniversary
