Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

Yes, just not sure if it’s PMS or Android/SHIELD causing it.

Seemed to happen nightly, but has now been 48 hrs without apps stop working. Guessing some sort of instability with talking to attached storage.

@Jimmy_Hendrixx Thank you, that seems to be the exact issue. Major issue with a media server since some of us are using files in the 30-70 GB range.

It’s about a month now that I’m reading here daily. Yeah, I read the 1121 posts and I waited patiently.
Now I’ll have my grand kids comming over during the week end and I really would like to use my Plex again.

No, I am not capable to ‘sideload’ stuff and jumping through hoops… I’m too old and too tired for that.

I was waiting for the updates which, as it seems are here now. Nvidia update 9.0…1 and Plex Media Server… BUT I DON’T SEE THOSE UPDATES!

When searching for updates on the shield, which is 9.0.0 at the moment, it tells me I`m up to date.

So how the heck am I supposed to get it to 9.0.1?

I have my own business and, that`s clear for anybody who isn’t working on a hourly base, what Nvidia and Plex are doing is unacceptable.

It’s all hot fixes (3 so far - unofficial releases not approved by google) which didn’t really address anything other than introduce more bugs to the entire shield. I recommend not signing up to the hot fixes until an official update rolls out. My only reason for signing up to the Hot Fixes was for the Plex Media Server, which is still not working after 3 hot fixes. Smh

Hey HankNYC,

So the Nvidia update 9.0.1 isn’t official?

In this case I won’t install it, as the only life line is Disney+ for the kids and, as it seems, I would loose this when installing an unofficial update and thus I would loose any possibility to entertain them.

Another reboot. Shield locked up and Plex wasn’t responding.
This is the norm now. Will run for 2 days MAYBE and lock up.
Only fix is a reboot.
9.0.1 is not official. I’m on 9.0.1 which is hotfix #3
I wish another update or something would come out.
I already went ahead and purchased a 920+. I’m done with the Shield.

Having not used Plex on my Nvidia Shield (P2897) for a few weeks and not knowing of this issue I updated my device tonight to 9.0.0 only to then find my PMS down and missing when in the Plex Settings. I can confirm I am also using external device storage connected to the shield for storing the PMS and movies.

Can anyone confirm if there is an accepted fix yet or are we still awaiting one from Plex/Nvidia?

Thanks

PS. This is my first forum post. = )

I completely disagree. Before installing any of the hotfixes, Plex would not start on my 2019 Shield Pro, with my media on an external exFat western digital drive. After installing hotfix 3, I am experiencing Plex locking up after a few days, but the Plex server actually starts. That is a substantial difference from a Plex server that would not even start. If I need to restart the shield, I can do it remotely, by using RDP over SSH to a Raspberry Pi 4 and use scrcpy locally from the Pi to restart the Nvidia Shield.

The better question is why is Nvidia still pushing the 9.0.0 update out to machines still on 8 when they know 9.0.0 is substantially broken? Nvidia claimed they “tested” Plex and everything was working “before” pushing out the 9.0.0 update, if that is the case, why after 3 firmware hot fixes have they not fixed the problem? Nvidia claimed the problem is Plex’s fault for “changing the apk.” If the “entire” problem is due to an apk change, why is that we are still having issues after three firmware hot fixes, because NVIDIA SCREWED UP, NOT Plex, by pushing a 1/2 baked Android firmware update without properly testing it.

Firmware fixes should not be needed if the problem is only with the Plex apk. Nvidia is lying to us. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/481782/shield-experience-upgrade-90-known-issues/3196400/

Correct. Wait for an official release. The Hotfixes have pretty much bricked both of my Shield TV Pro (2017 and 2019). Numerous crashes daily and most apps stuttering.

I was in a similar boat as you last week.

I signed up for Hotfix 3 (v9.0.1(33.1.0.274)) and then installed PMS v1.25.3.5448 (it’s supposed to come with hotfix 3 some days but I did find that I have to sideload it myself for Plex to launch.

That enabled Plex to launch again and also access my external drive again. In my case I did have to setup my libraries from scratch again. That seems to largely have sorted the issues although I have also experienced some lag across apps (more of a nuisance) and PMS and the shield does crash every 2-3 days so I have to physically unplug it it and then it seems fine again for another 2-3 days.

It did “fix” it as the shield and PMS is usable again and the rest are only annoyances at this point. Hopefully issues that are resolved when the proper fixes are released.

p.s I’m on a pro 2019. I manage to stop my 2017 from updating just in time.

Good for you buddy, I guess you are the only person in this forum that’s not having issues with PMS. I’m very IT savvy… I’ve tried everything including side-loading of apps/PMS, factory reset and all were fruitless. Plex Media Server on my Shield Pro 2017 does not even appear within the Plex setting and my Shield Pro 2019 PMS would only appear after uninstalling and reinstalling both PMS and app and then would disappear after a day or so. Also there’s no way to prevent the Shield from sleeping, even after tinkering with the settings within the Developer mode. Plex and Nvidia need to get their collective acts together and fix this thing with an official update. Also Live TV/DVR has been missing as well. The Shield still will not detect any external drive. Too many issues to list.

So your PMS is able to detect your external drive?. Does this mean that within your setting, you see 3 options (2 internal memory and 1 external)?. I have the same PMS v1.25.3.5448 (not sideloaded) and there’s no external option on my PMS

I never said I am not having problems with the Plex Media Server on the Nvidia Shield. I am following this thread for a reason.

You may be “IT savvy” but my 2019 Shield Pro & HDHomeRun Prime are working together right now, with an external HD, exFat formatted. As several others on here have described, I just need to restart the Nvidia Shield every couple of days as something is causing it to lock up.

In any event, the hotfixes are definitely an improvement over 9.0.0 which was complete Plex Media Server brick.

Sorry to hear. I’d only categorise myself as moderately savvy, at best and I’m not sure any of the steps I took will help as it sounds like you’ve tried everything already. In any case…

On my first attempt after installing hotfix 3, I still wasn’t able to access PMS although the Plex app would load. I had to reboot multiple times (including pulling the power physically) before I could setup PMS again but I only had 2 internal options (no external option as you say).

So I deleted Plex and PMS, again rebooted multiple times (it’s brute force by this point), sideloaded PMS and installed Plex again. Plex still didn’t want to load so I again rebooted multiple times and then finally I was able to setup PMS with the 3 options to choose from (2 internal and 1 external). I did also check that PMS had access to the external drive in the Settings but I don’t recall having to change that after granting permission during the PMS setup.

I’m not sure which or if any of these steps helped. By this time I was also losing it so I can understand the frustration!

The other point I’d make is that the performance of the Shield definitely took a hit after hotfix 3 (I didn’t experience hotfix 1 or 2) so there were times when I would just leave the Shield alone for 10-20 minutes as it almost felt like there were some internal processes that were stalling. I’m not sure that changed the outcome. It just kept me from ripping the unit out of my cabinet…

This fix from @Jimmy_Hendrixx worked for me too, thank you! My server was running fine for about a week (Hotfix3 & PMS v5448), then randomly froze up again.

Had been storing the metadata on my NTFS external HDD with the media.

  • Formatted a 64GB thumb drive with FAT32 and connected as external storage

  • Uninstalled & reinstalled Plex & PMS

  • Verified each have files & NAS access, and energy optimization disabled

  • Launched PMS, then Plex and setup a new server

  • Moved the server to the thumb drive

  • Added my folders to the new library and it scanned & refreshed metadata overnight and has been running for several days.

Yep, still no running Plex media server & I’ve tried every hotfix, including multiple factory resets & countless reboots.

I’m monitoring this thread & hoping for an update from the devs that fixes the issues many of us are experiencing.

My issues should be replicable:

1 - fill a portable external hdd formatted to exFAT with about 2 TB of media files

2 - start a Plex media server fresh, after another factory reset

3 - connect external hdd, go into Plex app & set it to use external hdd for storage/media

4 - have Plex start adding libraries/gathering metadata via pc for the Nvidia Plex media server

5 - in my case Plex media server freezes (while gathering metadata, about halfway through), the server stops & then the server option disappears from the Plex app menu completely despite reboots

So your not alone triks_melb, my problems have not improved with the hot fixes so far either.

thanks for confirming, I was infuriated to be told by Plex that Hotfix #3 fixed this when there are so many recent posts talking about issues with external drives.

Just curious, why NTFS instead of exFAT?

I routinely bounce between Linux, Windows, and the MacOS, so exFAT was a no brainer. Why use NTFS? Do you have a second HD you can format as exFAT or FAT32 to copy over your media and have Plex scan the media with the alternative file system?

If the new Android version fails to work with specific file systems, that would likely be something for Nvidia/Android to fix and not Plex.

idk, trying to help narrow down possible causes of the issues people are experiencing,

I actually have the drive formatted to exFAT, so I’ve edited the post you quoted for accuracy. I don’t know why I typed NTFS. Sorry for the confusion.

I think nobody is listening anymore from Plex. They are done with us rightfully complaining.

Hi. Can you please update us on whether Plex is working on a new PMS app to address the issues we are having or if Plex considers that the problems are with Nvidia/android and Plex is waiting on them for a fix? Whichever is the case do you have any idea as to when we will have a fix?

Or do you consider the issue solved for the moment as most people are getting by unplugging/rebooting/reinstalling and we can all wait for the next major system or apk update whenever that comes?
