Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared

I did want to ask. I’m signed up for beta updates for plex from the play store. It’s on the same version as the sideload so it should be the same? Could someone link the apk to sideload? I wanna just test. My biggest issue is that plex crashes overnight

I’ve been looking into this a while. Shield experience 9 upgrade, server dissapeared - #989 by anon18523487

Both Plex and NVidia are investigating.

I see this is still not resolved (per prior post, I am not impacted since I did not upgrade Shield Experience to 9.0 yet; nor my PMS either for that matter - still on 1.23.x).

Given, my setup, per Plex employee MoveFan.Plex, I would reportedly not be impacted by the issue that is the subject of this thread - access to server.
However there are ,however, as he also noted, still Hardware Transcoding issues that could impact me and potential other unknown issues.

My Plex setup:

  • I have an 8TB NTFS-formatted USB drive attached to my 2019 Shield TV Pro containing my media (i.e. video clips and audio tracks).
  • However My Plex Media Server Storage Location is ‘Internal (System)’.
  • Shield Experience prior version (before 9.0 / Android 11)
  • PMS 1.23.x

I know this is being worked on, but given it has been about a month now, any news / ETA on the fixes for the OP’s ‘server disappeared’ issue, or the HW transcoding issue?

Thanks, I will try the old fashion cable unplug. It’s crazy that we have to resort to this while Nvidia/Plex don’t seem to care about their users.

Unfortunately, it is unfair to not fix this problem!!!

It is unfortunately not a simple thing and it was caused by changes in Android by Google on how apps are allowed to accesses external drives etc and other new Google requirements which have more restrictions on approval for app store.

We are currently waiting on some changes Nvidia is making.

I totally understand, PMS seems to be doing a little better with exFat formatted drives than NTFS-formatted external drives. Plex Media Server still can not detect NTFS. After so many infuriating trial and errors, both of my Shield Pros (2017 & 2019) are able to read the NTFS drives via plug and play… I tested out VLC, File Explorer, File Manager, etc and they were all able to read and play media. However; the Plex Media Server still can not detect the drive…leading me to finally realized that this issue appears to fall squarely on Plex.

Nvidia should never had pushed out the update without thorough testing. I also know for a fact that Plex Media Server is broken. My Shield is now able to read external drives (VLC/File Manager, etc.), but PMS still can not detect external drives. So the Plex should shoulder the blunt of the blame.

How’s your external drive formatted (exFat or NTFS?). Thanks.

Does anyone have a link to the apk to sideload for the newest revision 5448

When I installed 9.0.0 I was still able to sftp into the external HD, exFAT formatted drive, via an SFTP app installed on the Nvidia Shield 2019 Pro and see all my media. At the same time the Plex Server was completely borked. Yet, Nvidia has released three hotfix firmware updates to get Plex working again, showing that the APIs that Plex is using to access the drive are different than what my SFTP server app and VLC are presumably using.

If you have a spare drive, I would format it as exFAT and copy your data over and see if you can get that working. NTFS version info could be helpful information to help narrow things down. I.e., The NTFS filesystem from XP creates sector issues on modern drives. NTFS formatted drives using Windows 7 and newer automatically adjust for the newer sector layout. In cases like the one I just described, knowing the OS of the machine that formatted the drive would be useful.

“caused by Google” who is next to go down in the disaster that Shield Experience 9 is.

I was not trying to pass the buck to anyone. Just passing along info. Right now we are waiting on some changes from Nvidia.

Came home. Plex wouldn’t launch. Just a black screen. Reboot Shield all is good…for now.

Wow, after 4 hours of stuffing around, I was finally able to get past the “Please wait while we waste your time during first setup” for PMS

One of the earlier posts mentioned about granting file access. I had to expand the system apps and find “plex media server” and grant that full access as well all the time.

“Android 10 includes extensive changes to protect privacy and give users control”:rofl:

Appreciate the status update @anon18523487 @BigWheel .

Not sure if it helps, but I went to rip some UHDs from my lap top over my network to the shield adopted storage and got the network access to HDD to crash. Also happened with simple transferring large files, so guessing PMS using adopted storage might trigger the same thing when doing nightly cleaning.

When it does work speeds are down.

Hot fix 3, PMS 5448, 18TB exFat WB drive.

Yep same thing happens to me.

Another symptom is where I was previously transferring over SMB at about 50mbps, since the update it’s more like 3mbps! Can’t blame Plex for that though, there’s something wrong with the NVIDIA sharing of external storage over a network.

Exactly the same !

do you have any news about DLNA not working on Plex???
