I just installed the hotfix and everything os working for me now.
Same issue as above but I’m using a network storage that is successfully mounted on my shield. But as others have stated, they mount is not appearing sitting within the Plex server settings.
I’ll just hold off until a proper fix is pushed out. What a mess this is from Nvidia
Installed Shield Experience hotfix. Plex server still won’t start and the server settings are still completely missing from the settings page in the Plex app. Thanks Plex and Nvidia for testing this before releasing. Yes, that is sarcasm…
My setup which does not work:
Plex library is on external storage (USB SSD)
My media is all on NAS SMB shares
Same setup, same problem.
Plex library is on external storage (USB SSD)

Hello
I had the same issue after the 9.0 update (NVIDIA Shield TV Pro (2019)).
I have done the following (and now everything is working \o/) it’s a bit extreme, it’s possible you’ll find some parts unnecessary:
Plex Media Server is on the Shield’s internal storage
- went to Plex TV (via Chrome) to remove any existing Plex Media Servers
- uninstalled Plex and Plex Media Server on the Shield TV
- rebooted
- installed Plex from the Play Store
- installed the Plex Media Server apk from @anon18523487 post (Thank you! :)) (post 49)
- launched Plex, did all the setup part until you need to click on “Finish”
- finally launched Plex TV (from Chrome) to setup my librairies and then waited for Plex do it’s job and voilà, all back to normal
Hope this helps a little.
Thx again @anon18523487
Cheers.
Before you jump into this, note that while I can connect to my Plex Server, I’m still having many, many issues – even after upgrading to the Nvidia 9.0.1 Hotfix release and the latest PMS (which so far is still limping along for me – EDIT: Nope. PMS disappeared again when I rebooted the Shield and it won’t restart.). Of note: DVR is broken (even after deleting and reconfiguring), I can only watch media on the Shield itself, my Music library is broken (even after deleting and rescanning), I lost all user-selected custom art for video in my library, and I lost all of my Collections. I have a suspicion that downgrading may have damaged my database to an extent that I might need to factory reset the Shield to get back to normal.
Anyhow, here’s how to downgrade with ADB…
I downloaded the minimal ADB/fastboot portable 1.43 files for PC here, and put all of the files in a folder on my PC’s C: drive called “Android” for easy access.
I downloaded 1.24 of PMS from APKMirror, and also put it in c:\Android.
I watched this video for an overall lowdown on how to setup & use Network ADB on the Shield.
And once everything was connected and authorized, this is the command (in bold) that did the downgrade:
C:\Android> adb install -r -d com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb_1.24.5.5173_(smb)-1119951202_minAPI23(arm64-v8a)(nodpi)_apkmirror.com.apk
Performing Streamed Install
Success
In addition to the File Access permissions that have been mentioned many times, under Apps → Special App Access, there are two additional permissions for Plex Media Server that I’ve set that are different from the defaults after the Nvidia 9.0 Upgrade. I wonder if these might help some other people struggling through this…
They’re:
Apps → Special App Access → Energy Optimization (I turned it OFF for PMS, because putting my Shield to sleep is how I lost PMS access the first time. However, making this change didn’t seem to regain access once I’d already lost it. The only thing that seemed to regain PMS access for me once it was lost was upgrading/downgrading the PMS app. EDIT: On the 9.0.1 Hotfix, this turns itself back on for me every time I reboot the Shield.)
Apps → Special App Access → NAS Storage Access (I turned it ON for PMS)
This is a known issue that Nvidia lists for the 9.0 Shield Update. Samba shares over the network are broken if you use Adopted Storage.
They’re fixed again if you sign up for and install the 9.0.1 hotfix.
However, because the hotfix is not “authorized” by Google, you lose the ability to setup the Disney+ app from scratch, and HDHomerun DRMed cable channels won’t tune anymore. (and more issues might get discovered down the line)
What’s also worrying is that even a fresh install directly to the Shield doesn’t even work.
Thanks for the heads up.
Interestingly, my install had as storage access allowed and energy optimise off by default. I lost access once off the shield but it seems ok now and Plex seems to be good and stable. My route was
- Factory reset
- Do not use usb storage until everything is downloaded and installed.
- Make sure permissions for PMS are accurate and turn off remove permissions if inactive
- Launch Plex but don’t add any libraries/folders just yet
- Leave Plex to do it’s thing. First time I did it this way it failed, but I hit try again and it worked straight away much to my surprise
- Formatted usb in desktop as Ntfs and plugged shield.
- Reports as not fast enough but this is a Sandisk extreme pro 3.2 128gb usb worked perfectly on previous android 9 and a NVIDIA recommended usb drive so I ignored it, sigh and hope it’s fine.
- Formatted as internal storage
- Moved files
- Told Plex to use usb for storage, as the libraries are empty, took less than ten seconds.
- Added tv folder and started scanning then stopped just to check.
- All works as expected, including local clients within network and over internet.
However, due to SMB issues still can’t copy over backup library to restore everything as it should be - might do it overnight if the fix still isn’t in.
Looking for a solution to get Plex back without success :
Made a reset of the Shield
I could restore the NAS mount easily but PMS was not starting
Reset Shield again,
removed the USB key, did not mount the Network shares
PMS still not starting.
I could easily survive a while without the USB and without any other apps than the PMS, Plex App and the NAS shares on the Shield, but, so far I’m stuck.
I’ve subscribed to the hotfix, but since my first problem is just to restart the PMS… not sure if it helps.
Any idea ?
Like I mentioned above, I used Aptoide TV to install an older version of PMS. That works. I now have my library that is on USB storage. Will just deal with the old version until a fix is released. The version I installed is 1.23.4.4805
Thanks for all the good info! In light of everything you stated, maybe I will just wait for their final fix.
So the app permissions in NVIDA - allow all the time - worked however, I’m unable to get into a lot of the server settings in PMS - like managing libraries - adding/deleting. it says it’s unavailable.
Me too, hopefully someone has a solution other than downgrading
yep. I want to avoid all that hassle of downgrading etc. not sure if this is a plex issue or an NVIDIA issue although it seems that getting into server settings is on plex.
Same here, after update PMS stopped working. Not using USB storage.
This is a Plex issue. They clearly didn’t fully test or update their Android TV Plex Server with Android TV 11. Somebody probably checked that it ran in the most basic sense of having the library and media all local to it and no other use case and called it a day.
It’s an Nvidia issue as far as not ensuring that the Plex Server they advertise as a major feature of the Shield TV Pro would still work.
Everybody involved had ample time to make sure this wouldn’t happen and did not. I might as well be using a Chromecast with Google TV instead of the Shield at this point.
Same for me. Unfortunately, I went ahead and nuked/reinstalled PMS and now it won’t finish the initial setup step. (Media files are on an external USB drive). Hopefully, a fix is coming.
Thank you, this solved the issue where Plex doesn’t see new files in library !
