As I said way back in my first post regarding the shield experience update “this is going to get messy” and I wasn’t wrong on reading through messages it’s unbelievable how many different versions of Plex media servers people are trying to get a working service with a Hotfix this rollback that try a little bit of this if not go back to this mind blowing I think’s I may have been spoiled with been a Apple IOS user with Apps and things just working straight off no tweaking about to get things running correctly Received update to shield for 9.2 but holding back to see how reliable it is first at the moment I have everything running spot on with Plex Version 1.25.9.5721 and I’m not willing to go through all that :poop: again for an update that totally wreck’s settings after getting things running smoothly as I have now after a lot of work

Simple answer “””NO”””

I too did a fresh install of PMS on Sunday and finally my sever showed in the Plex app, so apart from a 6 hour rebuild of the library, hurray I thought, - just updated to the latest PMS beta and player beta on Google Play - server disappeared again!

Arrrrrggggghhhh - I can’t live like this, I can’t do a rebuild ever time I upgrade the app or reboot the box, will a Dev respond, this is pathetic - the server had ran fine for a year till Android 11.

I’m on the latest hotfix and I have a ssd in a usb 3.1 adaptor, PMS has permission to access NAS and files on it.

Based on some of the feedback here https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/490234/shield-experience-upgrade-902-released-41222/ anyone who has a working version of Plex right now should not upgrade to 9.0.2. If Plex is broken you might as well give it a go and join the rest of us beta testers!!!

The odd part to me is that with one of the hot fixes I thought the “server disappearing” was addressed and now people are having issues again.
Also HW transcoding is not fixed in PMS 1.26.x Beta. PMS 1.26 did fix the “TrueHD is borked” issue, as it was referred to, that popped up with the FORCED upgrade of Plex TV client on April 5th.
But now due to HW transcode issue in 1.26, it is a Catch 22 situation.
You either keep PMS 1.23 and have TrueHD clips not play at all.
Or you have to get a newer PMS 1.26 Beta e.g. that fixes the TrueHD issue but breaks HW transcoding, despite what the Release Notes say.

Thanks, I have a working version on update 9.0.01. So I’ll not update anytime soon. Not sure which version of Plex I’m on though. I do turn it off every night and occasionally when I turn it back on it doesn’t work but a restart usually sorts it. Not sure I dare ever update Plex or Shield again :disappointed_relieved:

I concur, HW transcoding is most defintely not fixed in latest release

An observation on the issue with the server disappearing… that may be only temporary and lasts as long it takes for PMS to upgrade itself.

On my Shield with external USB thumb drive for DB storage, it took almost 90 minutes to complete the upgrade from v1.25.9.5721 to v1.26.0.5715, mostly due to how long for the forward migrations and database vacuuming to be completed.

During that time, PMS would in effect disappear. The only indications that PMS is doing its upgrade work behind the scenes would be the log entries that can be 10 to 30 minutes apart, plus the timestamps on the DB files getting updated every minute.

After the upgrade process is completed, PMS would reappear.

It may take even longer for some, depending on how large of a database it has to migrate and on the throughput to/from the drive where the DB is located.

Tired of waiting for a solution, I finally downgraded to Nvidia’s 8.2.3 image (Android 9) and it’s perfect again. Finally with this version of Nvidia and version 1.26.0.5715 of the Plex Server transcodes via Hardware, I have the 112 Mb/s network transfer again…

I have all the latest updates of the shield and plex but I still have to restart the shield or even unplug the damn thing about once a week to get plex working again. This is now going on for months, very, very annoying! And now after the latest plex updates vobsub-subtitles aren’t displayed anymore.
Is somebody from plex or shield even working on these issues?

Looks like I’m in the same situation but my PMS only stopped a couple of days ago… I too use a USB SSD as extended internal storage on shieldtv 2017 version. It may be related to latest update but I can’t be certain it stopped straight after the update to android 11… Has a solution been found yet?

I’m using the latest official versions of all the shield software (9.0.2) and the latest Plex software that comes with that - everything seems to be working as expected (streaming to my 4 samsung TVs, and can access remotely offsite), except for hardware transcoding.

Don’t know if this helps anyone but it’s a possible fix to the slow transfer speeds a few people were still seeing even on 9.0.2.

Just change your USB port settings in the shield settings to max instead of auto.

Max is USB3.0 and auto is USB2.0 except for devices approved internally for USB3.0. Compatibility is USB2.0

Couple people tried it and said it worked right away.

That’s probably why people said transfer speeds are better on 8.2.3. since the “auto” USB port speed worked back then

New beta and new hotfixes are available from Nvidia in the latest beta release. My advice is if your system is running, don’t touch it.

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/491754/shield-experience-upgrade-902-hotfix-image/

Given, that something with the official 9.0.2 release locked up Plex on my 2019 Nvidia Shield Pro, making it unable to load anything off of my external HD. After installing this beta firmware release did not help, I ultimately downgraded back to 8.2.3 and now everything is working wonderfully again.

Inotherwords, don’t install the new beta firmware unless it addresses issue(s) specifically that you are having within the release notes.

Hello,
since the beginning of the problème (on my 2019 NVIDIA Shield TV Pro) , I waited a long time for a resolution. I applied the hotfix from Nvidia and apk provided here without success.

Yesterday, following Salamando’s message, I installed Android version 9.0.2.
After a second reboot (the update of the applications via the Play Store indicated that I had no space available when I did) and the cleaning of the cache, I updated the applications via the Play Store and since then, I have no problem with the Plex server!

I think however, following this problem and the lack of functionalities (sonic analysis), to pass to a mini pc to make the server and to keep the shield as smart and powerful part for my TV

My Plex setup on 2019 NVIDIA Shield TV Pro was going strong for 2-3 months on the following versions:

  • Shield TV : version 9.0.2 (33.1.0.319)
  • Plex Media Server : version 1.25.3.5448

Last night it all came to an end when I toggled PMS from “on” to “off”. When I went to turn it back on, PMS was not there in the settings and just disappeared. I already had to rebuild the entire library once back when v9.0 came out. I made many attempts trying to recover using Plex’s Repair a Corrupted Database procedure with no luck. This time, I’m going to flash back to v8.2.3.

I grabbed a backup of the entire directory where my Plex setup is located on my external storage: <external hdd>\Android\data\com.plexapp.mediaserver.smb\Plex Media Server

Question : Are you able to just copy this entire backup directory over to the new Plex database in order to avoid the pain of rebuilding your entire library and custom posters?

UPDATE: This actually worked! As a last-ditch effort, I uninstalled PMS and reinstalled the most recent version from the Google Play sore. After launching Plex, I stopped PMS and then just dragged and dropped the entire folder structure I mention above. Waited about 30 minutes for everything to catch up. It restored all of my custom posters, watch history, etc.

I have received a couple of updates from Plex on my Shield since my last message, but the system still doesn’t display vobsub subtitles. Other subtitles are OK.
Do people from Plex read these messages?
When will the display of vobsub subtitles be solved?

As of the latest release of Android, PMS, and PLEX client the issue of using an external SSD drive for the PMS database is NOT resolved. I can and have easily reproduced the problem. I am nearing ONE year since my PMS has been DOWN.
