Show names for audio tracks and subtitles [in all apps]

I’ve received a few updates from users pointing out this is not actually available on all platforms – though most key platforms have it by now.
Therefore I’m re-opening this thread. However I’d like to include a short “inventory” in order to focus this a bit.

Please feel free to give a short heads-up about the missing platforms in this list.

seriously thank you guys so much for this, i’ve been wanting this for ages and it’s great to not have to click through different tracks trying to find the right one anymore.

Yeah still waiting on this feature for the Samsung app. :weary:

I can confirm that it is not working on the Xbox or PlayStation apps.

Xbox One & Series app version: 2.75.1.70
Xbox One & Series client version: 5.18.1
Xbox One & Series platform version: 10.0.19041.8126

PlayStation 5 app version: 1.002.000
PlayStation 5 client version: 5.18.1
PlayStation 5 platform version: 3.20

PlayStation 4 app version: 2.02
PlayStation 4 client version: 5.18.1
PlayStation 4 platform version: v2.6.2-0-gceebfa36

@Jezrick , @UnInfamousGhost
Did you check this for both audio and subtitle tracks?

Good catch, that’s correct. Apologies for not specifying.

Yes, not available for either subtitles nor audiotracks for Samsung’s Tizen smart TVs. 2019 RU7100 if the model matters.

Voted for this to get support for mp4 container. My entire collection is in mp4 for reasons that cannot change.

I love your commentary here… feel the same way. The answer I always receive is “it’s not designed to be used that way”. You should split the movies apart and name them accordingly. “Bubba Ho-Tep” and “Bubba Ho-Tep - Commentary”.

From what I recollect, the idea of two movies being bundled together was to be used for multi part movies. Bubba Ho-Tep - Part 1, Bubba Ho-Tep - Part 2, etc.

I think this is a relic of the past. Most movies fit onto 1 DVD these days. We also don’t use dial up modems anymore.

It would be far more useful to store all versions of a movie under one movie title as you appear to want.

Thank you @tom80H for this summary! I’m really looking forward to having audio and subtitle stream info visible in all Plex clients, especially in Samsung Tizen.

I’d even be happy to contribute to the codebase if it’s possible in any way, either via CLA or an NDA. If only the Plex clients’ UIs were open-source as well as the core layer…

I didn’t realize this has been partially updated. I’ll have to check out my Shield and see if it’s working as expected.

Another vote for adding .mp4/.m4v support. Most of my collection (anything not 4K) is .m4v, and I’d rather not have to go through the process of converting all of those back to .mkv. While “named subtitle tracks” has been at the top of my Plex feature wish list for years, I’m not sure I have it in me to go through and reconvert my entire catalog for that one feature, however much I’ve been wishing for it.

I’ve searched… but hopefully it’s new or else, just point me in the right direction.

Would it be possible the have the same subtitles and Audio options in the Plex App than on the web UI?

The reason I ask is because I “need” the have several subtitles and audios of the same language (mainly french canadian and french France).

On the web UI, when you select a subtitle or Audio it will say French and underneath it French Canadian. Then you can have another French and French France underneath it and so on.

On the App, you can only see the first line. So basically, if you have several subtitles or audio from the same language you only see French, French, French and French. So you have to check them all since all my rip have both French Language in 5.1 and stereo (so 4 choices) and the same for subtitles which is a real pain since if my SO mother wants to watch something, she needs to check which one is the good one and more often than not just go back to Netflix.

LG owner here, waiting for this feature since 2020 :upside_down_face:
This FR has almost 400 votes, which probably puts it to top-20 demanded features, since 2014 when it was registered.
Many people find this topic, read comments and wait till it is implemented without comments, and topic auto-closed. Auto-close after just 90 days for feature that was registered 10 years ago (3650+ days!) is wrong approach IMO.
Any chance to get this into development?
Any chance for community to help with development or testing? or whatever can help move it from dead point?

Maybe it’s worth mentioning that this is already included in the Plex Experience Preview (only available for mobile platforms at this point).
