Some things not showing up in library

I am using the latest version of PMS on Windows. I am struggling with a specific problem.

I recorded a copy of the CMAs recently. If I stick it in a Movies or TV Shows folder, it will not even show that there is even a video in that folder. If I browse to the folders section in my Library, it shows nothing at all even in the folder.

If I stick it in an Other Videos folder, it can find it, and see it, but I can no longer use the “imdb-” tag to search for it directly, which only seems to work in Movies or TV Shows folders.

I am unsure why I cannot use the “imdb-” tag in my other videos folder, but I’d really rather fix the bigger issue. Why is plex ignoring my file just because it cannot automatically categorize it? It shows the folder as completely empty, even if I leave it that way all night. I have this issue with about 12 files currently.

Most common issue why Plex might not pick up / catalog some files are issues with file naming / organization (or maybe permissions… though that’s less of an issue on Windows IIRC).

Other Video type libraries are used for personal media and not matched against an online repository.

I took the name directly out of tvdb and made that my folder and file names and it still shows up as no file at all. Can I just have it show the movie no matter what? Why are they forcing me to categorize it before they even show it? Can I bypass this with some sort of setting change? It is in tvdb, and their website says that if it finds it there then it shows it, but it is definitely not showing it.

I have a dozen or so files with this issue. This isn’t just one, and I haven’t even gone looking for more. I imagine there are others.

Are you referring to the CMA Awards? If so, and you want metadata to be scraped for it, you need to name/organize it something like the following in order for it to be automatically matched.

test_tv/ <--- TV Shows library should point to this directory level, name is not important
└── CMA Awards (1967)
    └── Season 57
        └── CMA Awards (1967) - S57E01.ext

I created a test file for this on my system. The above structure resulted in this match, using the Plex TV Series scanner/agent.

You’d need to so something similar for other series which do not match automatically. You can also include the TVDB or TMDB series ID in curly braces at the end of the folder/filename to ensure a proper match, but the folder structure would still need to match that above.

If you still have issues after implementing the above structure, you may need to perform the Plex Dance for the series (particularly if it has been misidentified as a different series, or added as duplicate episodes to another series).

It will also work in a movie library

2023 CMT Music Awards (2023)

I hadn’t done a ton of testing with this one file but I didn’t necessarily want to point out that my primary test group is the first season of Britney & Kevin: Chaotic. I apologize for the diversion. I also don’t think I would have figured this out. This seems very unusual.

I have been using Plex since almost the day it came out and got Plex pass when it was still in beta or whatever because I wanted the DVR. I have never had to put a folder structure with seasons of I just want to put one file in there. We used to be able to just tie random stuff to imdb. Put in a file, put in the imdb URL, and be done. Now I have to look it up, to see which season it is, and then make a folder structure to symbize it all rather than it just letting me add my own files and categorize them myself in one single library?

I didn’t see anything about putting it in the folder or file name. Is there documentation for this that I can look through to see all my options?

@slwtx1983 https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/your-media/naming-your-movie-media-files/ is the overview

That’ll work with „random stuff“ added to a Movie-type library that’s categorized as movie on IMDb.

If you’re adding media to a TV Show-type library, you need to follow the naming schema and required folder organization (see link posted above by dbirch)

This must be where I am specifically running into an issue. I don’t have a lot of TV shows. My primary issue was that I had no idea why it wasn’t working. It honestly seems to make a lot more sense to provide some sort of error when a video file is not being shown in a library.

Is there any way to find all of the files in libraries that aren’t being shown?

Is there a way to setup extras per episode of something? If I have a set of DVD’s, and they have extras, how do I assign the extras per dvd somehow, or do all extras for every dvd go into one extras group?

This support article describes how to set up local extras for TV series, including how to set them up at the show, season, and episode levels. There’s a chart near the top of the article that shows which clients support each type of extra (not all clients support season and episode extras).

Thank you. This has been incredibly informative. I’ve been a daily Plex user since almost the day it came out and I never knew I could do all this stuff. I wouldn’t doubt if xbmc had this functionality and I just never knew it.

Regardless, I thank y’all for helping me out. This is going to be very helpful.
