*Some* TV shows do not have episode names or descriptions

I had to move my collection to another computer. I did so by physically moving the USB 3.0 external disk with the collection to the other computer and installing the server. All my TV shows have been named with TheRenamer. The TVDB is the top agent. The directory structure is as recommended. I’ve done the Plex Dance.

All my shows were properly recognized and their descriptions downloaded on the old computer. Most of them do now, but two of them just have “Episode 1”, “Episode 2”, …

??

Have you tried rescanning the library? Refreshing the metadata? Using a different metadata agent?

Do check if your files are in mp4/m4v format.
If they are, they could contain internal metadata which can potentially throw off Plex’s scanners.
To avoid troubles with embedded metadata, go to Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB
In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.

Or fix the embedded ‘Title’ tag in your files, so it contains sensible data.

Afterwards, ‘Refresh Metadata’ for affected shows. If that doesn’t help or the tv show is ‘matched’ wrong perform the Plex Dance with the whole show.

I have rescanned the library. I have deleted it, cleaned bundles, emptied trash, and recreated it. Haven’t figured out how to refresh the metadata.

Go to the preplay page of the whole show (important: not just one season or even an episode, it must be the whole show preplay.)
Upper - right there is the ellipsis ( . . . )
click on it
pick Refresh Metadata
wait 1-2 minutes

Thanks, but as I said I did the Plex dance. After moving “local media assets” below “The TVDB”.

I looked at a few file’s metadata. Most of them were blank. One .mkv had a garbage title.

Have you disabled Windows updates?

No. Is there some reason why I should?

I asked, because it is important to have them active.

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 2 minutes
  6. either refresh one show or add one episode into your library
  7. wait 3 minutes
  8. fetch log files and attach them here
