I have both english and swedish subtitles next to my media. If the name of the sutitle that has been chosen for playback has changed or if it has been deleted since the last hard refresh an error “there was a problem playing this item” will occur. Well I know its the subtitle messing up the playback but many others don’t.
I noticed that when I enter an item in the library (atleast as admin) plex does a brief refresh and notice new subtitles and adds them to the list of subtitles but it don’t remove deleted/renamed ones. The solution to this problem would be if plex not only notice new subtitles but also remove deleted/renamed ones so that one is not choosen upon the next playback.

It should update deleted/renamed subtitles too. It does for me. If not, can you delete/rename a subtitle, get to the pre-play screen for that movie and check that the subtitle info has not been updated, then get me the Plex logs.
I encountered this issue again. I removed the swedish (svenska) subtitle from the movie folder because it did not match. Now, weeks later, it crashes the playback because it’s still an available option in plex (it also get prioritized over the synced english subtitle because swedish is my native language). Resulting in playback crashes for everyone who tries to play the movie without manually changing the subtitle from swedish to english.
I attached the logs.
Comon Plex! Atleast display a proper error like “the selected subtitle is unavailable” or something so people get a hint of what’s preventing the playback. “There was a problem playing this item” rly don’t help at all. I have many plex friends who share my frustration.
I spotted this little gem in your log files: D:\Program\Plex\The path where local application data is stored\Plex Media Server\Media\localhost\2\c101de3fa10f5d2086143e53d4a09cc3431c54c.bundle\Contents
Did you move both the Plex program files and its data into the same folder on drive D:?
This could very well be one of the causes for this weird and unusual behaviour.
When I installed Plex I changed the path where local application data is stored to D-drive instead of C-drive to save space on C-drive.
The actual installation path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Plex\Plex Media Server
Thank you MovieFan.Plex, I have become super careful not to remove or edit subs without manually refreshing the item so lately I have not encountered this issue. I’ll come back with logs if I run into it again.
