Synology 218+ Plex error scanning directory "Permission denied" despite having read/write access

Server Version#: 1.25.1.5286
DSM: 7.0.1

Server log says: Error scanning directory, we'll skip and continue: boost:filesystem:directory_iterator::construct: Permission denied "/volume1/sharedfolder/path/to/file

I understand permission denied, but am unsure why that would be the case, since for the shared folder > Permissions > System internal user > PlexMediaServer has Read/Write access.

Any idea how to fix this or what is going wrong?

@syncopation

Perform a recursive permissions application of the share.

Hi Chuck, thanks for taking the time to send a reply on a weekend - much appreciated. So I removed read permission and re-added them while having checkbox to apply setting to subfolders ticked.

Took a while but did the trick. Thank you.

It seems the issue is with the files on the macOS system from which they are copied to the NAS. So when I copy the files to the NAS the problem comes back.
So maybe have to do this dance? Apple has changed resetting permissions again – The Eclectic Light Company

SMB will do this .

It’s unfortunately somthing you’ll have to be diligent about.

Is it possible to set the ACL (before copy) to allow reading by everyone ?

Using rsync to copy the files. This KB seems relevant but I am uncertain: How can I manage ACL settings on my Synology NAS? - Synology Knowledge Center

rsync will maintain the permissions from the SENDIING side.

That how-to covers a very broad base so yes it will do what you want.
Don’t try to over-control it.

All you need allow is “read” permissions for others (you are “owner”)
“PlexMediaServer” falls into the “others” category because it’s in its own private group

Adjusted permissions for everyone which is what macOS seems to call others, another rsync and files show up. So think this should be solved.
