Synology DS1618+ Plex Media Server Fails to Run

Server Version#: DSM 6.2.2-24922
Player Version#: 1.16.5.1552

I just downloaded the Plex server for my synology nas and I am unable to find my server. have read many posts but nothing showing the fix to this issue. how do you locate the server? below is the error I receive when I try and log in.
Get your Plex Media Server

To get started streaming your media everywhere, download and install Plex Media Server on the computer or device where you keep your media.

  1. Make certain the plex/web app is signed out of your account.
  2. Open http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web?secure=0
  3. Now you should be greeted by the sign-in & setup & “Got It” message

This assumes the LAN IP addresses are RFC-1918 compliant (10.x.x.x, 172.168.x.x-172.31.x.x, and 192.168.x.x)

1 Not sure if Synology is signed out of Plex, but I was not logged in and tried to open the web page. all I received is a page that the site could not be located.

2 not sure what you mean by the local IP address.

  1. Upper right corner of your Plex/Web browser app -->> Your Avatar -> Sign out
  2. Use the LAN IP address of your Synology . I presume you are using your laptop/computer/tablet to try and access it from your Home LAN?

logged out of Plex and Synology.
tried to open " * Open http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web?secure=0" and still get the error “can not find web site”
All from my desktop computer.

What does Plex show as running in Package Center and
Is it visible in Resource Monitor?

in package center it shows as running.
resource monitor shows “plex media server”

once I open Plex on the Synology it opens another web browser and in this it has a “looking for servers” in the upper left that keeps spinning. it will not connect to the Synology.

what’s the LAN IP address of the computer you’re accessing from ?
What’s the LAN IP of the Synology ?
Is the Synology firewall active?

167.169.12.20 is the computer
167.169.12.14 is the NAS
Firewall is active

Please make certain the ports are open for LAN discovery (what I think isn’t happening here).

Specifically, port 32400 and the other 324xx ports

If not against your LAN securty policy, whitelist the LAN (192.168.12.0/24)

turned off the firewall, restarted the server and still have the issue.

Ok. Time to get mean. :smiling_imp:

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Open Control Panel - Shared Folders - EDIT the Plex share - Permissions tab - Give your username R/W permission
  3. Save and exit
  4. Open File Station
  5. Navigate Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server
  6. Rename “Preferences.xml” to “Preferences.xml.old” (F2 or right-click “rename”)
  7. Start Plex
  8. Now open http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web
  9. It will greet you with the sign in, Got-It, and the start of the Setup Wizard
  10. Sign in and let it “claim” itself.
  11. If it does not, stop Plex — I will need a ZIP of the “Logs” directory from FileStation (Right-click Logs and “Compress to Logs.zip”)
  12. Once it signs in and claims, do not create any new sections.
  13. Skip forward and set only those preferences you want to make now.
  14. You’ll see “Finish” - click it
  15. At the dashboard, any pre-existing shares will be there
  16. You can now also create new shares as you need to.

I suspect you’ll not get past the sign-in process.
I look forward to seeing those logs.

you are correct and I did not get past task #8. could not recognize the IP address.
now for the logs, I found the log center and once opened I do not see any logs, and I do not see any way to download them if I had some.

Logs.zip (904.4 KB)
I think this is the logs you are referring to (the log in the Plex folder)

Yes, that’s the Logs directory. Thanks.

You’re trying to log into it from a remote location or via a VPN?

Dec 30, 2019 17:21:13.306 [0x7f61bf18e700] DEBUG - Request came in with unrecognized domain / IP '167.169.xxx.xxx' in header Host; treating as non-local

PMS won’t let you run setup unless you are SSH-tunnel’d into it or on the same LAN

OK, I do not understand this, I am home and both the computer I am logging into the server and the server are on the same network.
is there a setting on the NAS that is incorrect?

The NAS is seeing your computer’s IP as if it’s a 167.169.x.x address.
What is your LAN layout? Are both plugged into the same switch?

computer is plugged direct to the router.
and the NAS is plugged into the switch.
the switch is then plugged into the router.
do I need to have the computer plugged directly to the switch?

The biggest thing it’s not liking is that you use Publicly Routable IP addresses for your home LAN.

Does the name “Nippon Television” mean anything to you?
