Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

@soulmists

I apologize.

Please now install any version of Plex higher than 1.24.2.4973. Current Public is fine .

What this will do is pull the “repaired” DSM data out of the hidden space created by the beta 1.21.0.3744.

It might take some time for it to move the data… Don’t be alarmed if it takes time to upgrade (while it moves the files over… it’s just copying).

After that’s done, let’s see how much storage is used by “PlexMediaServer”.

I expect it to be very small compared to the space used by your “Plex” shared folder.

Ok - I attempted to install last night. I closed my laptop lid thinking it could install overnight once the process was started, forgetting that the ‘.exe’ file for install was on the actual laptop’s hard drive. (Sorry about that mistake, kicking myself over here.) When I opened the lid this morning it said the process failed, and that I should re-login and retry.

I checked the Plex install version under package center and it all looks good: it shows installed version 1.25.2.5319-7000

I checked the “PlexMediaServer” folder and it shows the following:

What should my next step be?

You are slightly mistaken here.

  1. “Manual Install” uploads the SPK file to the Synology. Once uploaded and installation begins, YES it will run independent of what any other computers are doing.

  2. What you show me there (the size of the PlexMediaServer shared folder) looks good. This is what I expect.

You should now be able to open PMS ( http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web ) to confirm it is fully active and claimed to your account. Don’t use app.plex.tv or the URL link in Package Center.

Ok, so I went to the local ip address of my NAS:32400/web and logged into my Plex account there. Everything ‘shows up’ and when I try to start a movie (home video) it shows this:
Screen Shot 2021-12-27 at 10.14.39 AM

@ChuckPa Nevermind! I figured it out. It looks like I just had to enable permissions for the PlexMediaServer internal account to be able to read/write the folder that has all my Plex Media stored in it.

Now it looks like all my photos and videos are working again.
Thank you so much!

My only question is - why does the MediaServer take up 30 gigs and 500,000+ folders? That seems like a lot for an application considering it’s drawing its file data from the folders that have my Plex Media files stored on them…

Also, do I manually install as usual from now on? Do I have to access plex only from ipaddress:32400/web, or can I use plex.tv and the normal plex app on my xbox?

Correct!

When the username changed in DSM 7, all we need to do is change the permissions for our media.

Excellent, thank you so much!

Why is the PlexMediaServer folder so huge? Why so many sub folders?

I have upgraded to DSM 7 and the latest plex server for DSM 7 but I am not seeing all of my movies. Is there a way to fix the database? I have tried emptying the trash, and rescuing, but that has not helped. in folder view I can see the folders, but not the actual movie files. The permissions on those files looks exactly the same as movies I can see. any suggestions? thank you.

Not the database — It’s permissions.

For each of your shared folders containing media – Grant permission for System Internal User PlexMediaServer to read or read/write as appropriate.

If you are having only a few missing.

@ChuckPa
Thank you for the info. I thought I had already done that, but I guess that was only to the Plex share, not the media share. I think we are good now. much appreciated.

The Plex share isn’t used by PlexMediaServer anymore unless you have media in there you want to leave there.

In DSM 7

  • The Plex shared folder is free for you to do as you wish
  • The PlexMediaServer shared folder is exclusively for the server software. No media in these. it will break.

Hey Team,

I have never been able to get Plex photos to load/scan my photos. Music/Movies are fine, just not photos. PlexPass Lifetime Subscription, btw.

My photos are located at \synology\photo. Went into settings → shared folder → edit advanced share permissions → system internal user → and granted the PlexMediaServer user Read/Write permissions, then rebooted the Plex service on the synology. Still nothing…

Synology is running version 7.0.1-42218.
Plex version 1.25.2.5319-7000

Hoping for some assistance or helpful logs to dive into and troubleshoot.

Best,

Andrew

Andrew,

Are you using the default Synology-provided shared folder?

I suspect you are given the problems you describe. It’s common place.

You do say /synology/photo … I don’t know if that’s a “Synology” shared folder or your mount point from the PC?

Would you please elaborate?

Thank you! I created the shared folder on Synology when I created all of my other shares. I mount to the share via smb on my computer running Windows 11. Don’t have any issues mounting the ‘photo’ share via smb on my iPhone to access files either. Perhaps it is an issue with Synology Photos/Moments locking the shared folder?

If so, what is a good log to tail and find out what’s going on? Thank you again for your help!

p.s. just tried creating a new smb share on synology for photos, copying the photos, and rescanning with plex application. still nothing. hoping you can assist!

Best,

Andrew

Hi ChuckPa - I have a new DS920+ and installed plex version 1.25.2.539-7000.
Everything goes as expected until I try to add my media. A page shows up in Plex to install the media server which makes no sense as it initially indicates the NAS installation.

I have all the necessary permissions checked for Plex on the shared folders etc.

Thanks!

@jseif415

Permissions for user Plex or System Internal User PlexMediaServer ?
DSM 7 change to PlexMediaServer. Plex is no longer used and may be removed. The installer would have removed it if it had permission to (DSM 7 does not grant that level of permission anymore)

Are you opening the server by using http://IP_ADDR_OF_NAS:32400/web (with your actual LAN address substituted here ?

@av_andrew

Can you please do the following?

  1. Make certain DEBUG logging enabled , VERBOSE disabled (settings- server -general - show advanced)

  2. Restart Plex

  3. Let it sit idle for 2 minutes to stabilize

  4. Now Scan Files for the section.

  5. When finished , Download the logs ZIP file and attach here

Thanks, ChuckPa!

Debug logs attached.

Best,

Andrew

Thanks for the logs,

To remedy, you must grant permissions for PlexMediaServer to the share (you’ve done that) AND all the subfolders

Here’s the FAQ for setting permissions within the subfolders to fix the problem when files are uploaded which don’t allow “everyone” to read them,

This FAQ shows user Plex (from DSM 6). For DSM 7, use PlexMediaServer.
(( I’m working on updating all the FAQ to show both where necessary)

Bingo! The ‘photo’ folder needed a recursive ‘Apply to All Sub-Folders’ checkbox or chmod -R (in Linux) for the Plex Application/User to be able to see it. Thank you!!

  • As for the other warning messages in the logs, thanks for pointing it out. I am not in a position with the ISP to release double-nat. The NAS has two (2) network interfaces, only one is connected, and defaulting to a self-assigned 169.254 address on the disconnected one. Don’t see a way to disable it on the Synology end. If it causes issues, I’ll connect the other network interface and enable load-balancing/failover.

Thanks again for all of your help. Stoked to have this resolved!

Best,

Andrew
