When you installed, Did it give you a failure indication with Instructions in the popup
-or-
DId it sit at “Installing” for a while then finish with “Successful” ?
It came up with the Installed successfully window, every time.
confirm you have metadata in the Plex shared folder
uninstall + Erase
install again.
This is the window that comes up…
But, when I follow the instructions, I can’t set the permissions…
Because the PlexMediaServer user is not in the list.
If I go to Control Panel/User & Group and try to create the PlexMediaServer user, it says “The user name already exists or is reserved for system use only. Please enter a different one.”
When I go to File Station and right click on the PlexMediaServer share and select Permissions, then the PlexMediaServer user is there with Read/Write permissions.
I have no control over the PlexMediaServer user as it does not appear in the User & Group dialogue
Not Local User
Change that dropdown to System Internal User
.
I have uninstalled, with erase, confirmed that all files have been removed from the PlexMediaServer share and re-installed. Same result… when I run Plex, it opens a new tab in the web browser and says Not Authorized

Don’t know if this is the right place to post, but I have been unable to get Plex server to work properly on a Synology DS220+. I bought 3 of these units to give as gifts and purchased a Plex Pass Lifetime for each. Two configured with no issues, but the third consistently delivers a “Not Authorized, you do not have access to this server” error. I have uninstalled, generated a new code and reinstalled several times but have not been able to get past this roadblock.
basic questions:
trying to setup all using the direct LAN IP?
All 3 are on the same subnet as your computer (different subnet makes it remote and tightens security)
Hi everybody, just to let you know how we fixed this…
When I did the upgrade, I was under the impression that I had to rename the Plex Share to PlexMediaServer. Actually, what happens is that the new DSM7 version of Plex creates the PlexMediaServer share and then converts the libraries in the Plex Share over to the PlexMediaServer share and deletes it from the Plex share.
Luckily I had a back-up of the library files, so we were able to re-create the Plex share libraries, so when we did the install of the DSM7 version of Plex, all the conversions happened and everything worked after that.
Thanks to ChuckPa for his patience and assistance.
Thanks for your help the other day. This morning I ssh’d into my synology to check file permissions, now my brain is melting. I went for a hike yesterday and took a couple of photos & a (1) video. When I got home, I opened the ‘Synology Photos’ app on my iPhone, which automatically synced the photos/video to the //synology/photo/2021 folder that Plex knows about. Here’s the cool part; Plex automatically scanned the folder and ACTUALLY loaded the video (1) from yesterday, but not any of the photos.
Based on my ssh command ‘ls -l’ it looks like the file permissions are exactly the same between the file that loaded correctly (video.mov) and the file that didn’t (photo.heic). Any idea what’s going on or how to troubleshoot?
Video from yesterday that loads correctly in Plex
ablackwell@synology:/var/services/photo/2021$ ls -l ./December\ 29,\ 2021/IMG_0 709.mov
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 ablackwell users 24438374 Dec 29 13:14 ‘./December 29, 2021/IMG_07 09.mov’
Photo(s) from yesterday do NOT load
Plex Media Server Logs_2021-12-30_08-45-37.zip (2.8 MB)
in Plex
ablackwell@synology:/var/services/photo/2021$ ls -l ./December\ 29,\ 2021/IMG_0 708.heic
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 ablackwell users 2194650 Dec 29 13:13 ‘./December 29, 2021/IMG_070 8.heic’
You’re using the Synology “photo” shared folder?
I believe so. I tried creating a new ‘share’ on synology, migrating the data within the ‘photo’ share and had the same issue the other day. Here are the other folders in /var/services directory. Let me know how I can be helpful!
ablackwell@synology:/var/services$ ls -l
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx+ 1 root root 14 Dec 12 19:46 homes → /volume1/homes
lrwxrwxrwx+ 1 root root 14 Nov 5 19:36 music → /volume1/music
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Nov 5 19:23 pgsql → /volume1/@database/pgsql
lrwxrwxrwx+ 1 root root 14 Dec 28 11:18 photo → /volume1/photo
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Nov 5 19:23 tmp → /volume1/@tmp
lrwxrwxrwx+ 1 root root 14 Nov 5 19:36 video → /volume1/video
the problem is that /var/services/-anything-
will always be inaccessible
Your best bet is to create a new shared folder “Photos” on the volume and move everything there.
You can then give System Internal User PlexMediaServer
access
don’t you love DSM 7?
No kidding. DSM7 // Plex are start to frustrate me. I created ‘/volume1/photos’ via ssh on the Synology, added it to the PlexMediaServer group, made PlexMediaServer the owner, and set the permissions accordingly. Then I copied the photos/video from yesterday, and STILL only able to see the one (1) video from yesterday within Plex…none of the photo(s) are showing up.
(plex showing two copies of the video, one from /volume1/photo and the other from /volume1/photos (new), but that’s ok).

Just a note on this - I hit the same problem. My Synology install had the “admin” account disabled and the steps provided didn’t migrate Plex for me. I just ended up going with a clean install but might be worth pointing out in the docs if default “admin” account needs to be re-enabled for a Plex manual install?
Each was setup on the same Lan, same subnet. The two units that installed seamlessly were gifted and are no longer here but my own Synology NAS with my account remains here as well as the one I am having issues with. The Plex Media Server shows up as an authorized device in the Plex settings, but when clicking on + Your Media the page has the button to “Get Plex Media Server”. My long-time server works with no issues.
