Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

@ChuckPa

Thanks for the instructions, but there is no PlexMediaServer activity going in in “Processes” as the file is being installed. Is that normal?

Cheers

Wait for it.

Do not migrate away from that page in that tab.

You will always get a result if you stay right there and wait.

@ChuckPa

Got the following message pop up, this is what happened all the previous times.

There is no sign of PlexMediaServer activity in Resource Manager

Welcome to DSM 7 :rofl:

Let it run

If you want,

  1. Create a scheduled task, user-script
  2. have it email you the results (we want those results)
  3. it can run as any user
  4. In the task settings (the script part) put this
#!/bin/bash

ps -ef | grep -i plex

Save and then run it one time.

In the email, you will see the processes listed.
Please share

Starting to think I should have stuck with DSM 6 :rofl:

Just out of interest I looked in the PlexMediaServer file location and just two folders and all empty. Not sure if that is significant.

Unfortunately I am not tech savvy enough to do the script you mentioned so I’ll put my feet up and open a beer for a while :slight_smile:

Let it go… It’s getting there.

When these are created… It’s about to start moving the data.

Do you see ‘Migration.log’ in the Plex shared folder ?

I installed Plex on DSM 7 yesterday on Synology and all of my playlists are missing. Is there a way to restore them from my DSM 6 install? The old Plex folder is still there, but I have no idea where the playlist info is stored.

@tdembie

Sounds like you had a few missteps when upgrading.

  1. Was Plex installed when you upgraded to DSM 7 ?
  2. If so, when prompted by Package Center, did you hit “Repair”?

As long as you don’t delete the Plex shared folder’s contents, it will all migrate to DSM 7.

Thanks for the response. Yes, it was installed.

No, I didn’t click repair as the instructions I saw said not to.

Thanks.

When DSM 6 Plex was installed, and you installed the DSM 7 Plex, Synology considered that an “Upgrade”.

They never invoked any of the “install” scripting (which is what you need to move your data over)

At this point,

  1. CONFIRM you still have Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server intact
  2. Uninstall the DSM 7 package with the ERASE option to remove all that DSM 7 data
  3. Now install again (same SPK file). DSM will launch the ‘Install’ scripting instead of the ‘upgrade’ scripting.
  4. After it checks all the permissions (it will tell you what to fix if need be), it will sit at “Installing.” for however long it takes to complete.
    – It doesn’t “Hang”. it just takes as long as needed to walk through each file of metadata. It’s a one-pass operation.

DSM might say “Operation Failed” ( a common bug ) becuase the package install is taking a long time IGNORE IT.

It will force you to refresh the page and you’ll lose the “Installing” display.

Resource Monitor → Processes (or Task Manager) → will show “PlexMed+” running. set the refresh rate high (short refresh) so you can catch it.

It runs lots of little commands as it works.

In the end, is one big mv command.

Thank you! It worked. Appreciate your help here.

Hello, I am having issues getting my plex server to work on my Synology DS920+. I had some help getting it working a few weeks ago, but then I moved back to school, and ever since I’ve been back to school the server has been having issues. Just to give you some context of how I am connected to the internet at school, I am in an on-campus apartment that has internet provided by our school. I have a WiFi access point in my room, that run ethernet cables to my PC and NAS. I am pretty sure that the school was blocking access outside of the network, but I have always been able to stream from any plex server I’ve had previously when on my school’s network (even if I am on a different part of campus). Last night, for some unknown reason, the server was unavailable when I went to stream something on it from my TV. I tried restarting my NAS, stopping Plex from running on the NAS and restarting it, but nothing worked. Eventually, I decided to do a full reset of my server. I deleted the server from my account, and deleted all Plex data (minus the actual media files that I wish to store on plex) from my NAS and reinstalled the latest version of Plex for my synology device. After installing, I opened the app on my NAS and signed in. When I signed in, I saw no option for me to add libraries, but I could see a server that my friend was sharing libraries from. I closed out of Plex for a minute and when I went back to it, I got the Not Authorized “you do not have access to this server” error (I am accessing the NAS/Plex from the NAS IP address, not quickconnect). I have no idea how to fix this now, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

  1. No
  2. The Last thing I did was a full uninstall and reinstall.
  3. I installed Plex from the Package Center under Beta Packages.

Below are my Synology Specs.

DS916+
INTEL Pentium N3710
CPU: 1.6GHz
Ram: 8 GB

@Trilback

  1. Please don’t use the BETA package. It’s no longer viable. We are using Production packaging . Synology has been refusing to update Package Center.

  2. Do you have your metadata still in the Plex shared folder ?

Please look at the IP address of the NAS. Is it still in RFC-1918 addressing?
( 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x → 172.31.x.x ) ?

For my Model what version should I be using and I can check when I get home for my Meta data in the plex shared folder.

Download the Public 64 bit Synology DSM 7 from plex.tv/downloads

If this is a full cold installation;

  1. Uninstall + Erase the beta package (so the rogue beta data is removed)

  2. If there is no metadata in the Plex shared folder, then you’ll get a brand new installation.

No. The NAS is showing an IP address beginning in 35.xx.xx.xxx

I seem to be able to get into the plex server fine now, without getting the not authorized error, but since I removed the old server from my account on the plex website and deleted the plex media server data and reinstalled it on my NAS, my libraries are no longer showing up on Plex. When I try to go to settings, the manage library section does not even appear for me. So I am unable to add/edit/remove any library. Why would this be?

If you don’t have the ability to manage it, it’s not recognizing you as the owner.

I suggest:

  1. sign out of Plex/web

  2. Open an incognito browser window

  3. open the Synology directly by typing it’s LAN IP address in the url: http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web

  4. Now it will want to sign in and then “got it” and “claim”.

  5. This is where it attaches to your account.
