Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

I followed your instructions, but there was no option to click “got it” or “claim.” I just saw the message that says “your home screen is empty” and then there is still no option to add the libraries in the settings.

Hi all,

Can’t see if it’s answered here (sorry long thread) is there a way to ‘trust’ Plex as a source in DSM 7, like it was in DSM 6? I keep getting the annoying pop up whenever i update, and i’d like to remove that if possible?

The red warning being displayed by Synology.

They have not updated our app in Package Center.

Do you have any other recommendation? I don’t know how to get the server to recognize me as an owner.

Hi ChuckPa - yeah i know, but when you’re updating it through your website (download the package, manual install) - you used to be able to upload a signing certificate to Synology so that you wouldn’t get the warning everytime you tried to install PlexMS in this way (or update it - can you not do that in DSM 7?

@ChuckPa just a small bump?

@gussict

Sorry for the delay.

Synology does not allow 3rd party apps to sign their SPKs anymore.

They demand full control over the platform. You bought it but it’s still their control. You will only use it as they deem appropriate.

We have requested they accept and sign ours so it can be published in Package Center only to hear the :cricket: :cricket: :cricket:

Thanks @ChuckPa

That’s a big shame to be honest, but appreciate it’s outside of your control. Sounds like they are going the Apple route :frowning:

There is something being explored. I can’t say (YET) but it’ll be pretty good.

Yesterday (Jan 14th,2022) I upgraded from DSM 6 to 7. Since I didn’t know I needed to Uninstall Plex from my DS18 Plus I originally didn’t, so absolutely nothing worked when I tried to access Plex. I found a YouTube video about it and went thru the steps there, then when that also didn’t work I found (I don’t remember where, I was going to lots of websites) that you should remove DSM 6 (but keep the folders on your server) and then download the new DSM 7, which I did. I then went into the Plex Folder, hit the Edit button, then hit Permissions and checked the Custom selection. All of my videos and music showed up on my Plex server. But none of them actually work. I can see the movie/album/Playlist and the songs that should be there are, but when I try to play them I get ‘Playback Error Please check that the file exists and the necessary drive is mounted.’ as an error.

I had put my music into a folder on the Synology NAS under ‘PlexMusic’ and the Movies under ‘Plex Movies’, is that the problem? As I said, the music and movies show up in Plex, but I get the above Playback Error.

I was also using the Photo software to sort and backup photos, and I don’t see the program that used to exist for that, The pictures are still in a folder but I’m not sure what software to use or if I am going to have problems with that as well.

I am obviously not terribly proficient with this, I’ve been trying to learn one section at a time before trying other features, so I am not trying to stream my audio/video outside my local network, not even to my phone.

Photo is now called Photos. It replaces Photo and Moments,
Since it was a major release consider reading the notes next time. Will probably give you less headaches:)

May I suggest

If the metadata is still in the “Plex” share, then please

  1. Unininstall the package with the ERASE option (to remove the errant DSM 7 installation)

  2. Now install any version of PMS from Plex.tv/downloads

  3. Migration will automatically start.

  4. it will sit at “Installing” until done. Don’t restart the NAS until it’s done.

If DSM tells you "Operation Failed’, ignore it.

Open Resource Monitor → Processes (or Task Manager) and look for PlexMediaServer (the new name).

Also, look in the Plex shared folder for Migration.log which will chronicle the progress (takes about 2 minutes to show up after you start installing)

I have been updating Plex for the minor updates for a little over a year, but this is the first time that I have had a major Synology OS update on my Synology DS218+, and nothing about this update procedure is familiar to me, so I apologize for asking what are probably stupid questions.

Won’t uninstalling Plex using the ERASE option delete all the playlists and rules that I have created for them, even if the actual movies/songs are still on the NAS? If so, is this unavoidable since I tried to update Plex incorrectly? My movies/shows aren’t really a problem, as I don’t have very many and Im sure just pointing Plex at the folder they are in will reload them.

The ERASE option only removes DSM 7 data from the BETA or from the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

It does not touch anything in the “Plex” shared folder.

I did it this way to make recovering from failed upgrades, or simply starting over, easier.

The checklist is:

  1. Confirm your existing DSM 6-based metadata still exists in Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server.

  2. If it does , Uninstall the DSM 7 package with the ERASE option.

  3. When uninstall + ERASE is complete, you will have
    – All your metadata still in the Plex shared folder
    – All DSM 7 data (duplicate & partial server) will have been erased.

  4. When you now install Plex (downloaded from Plex.tv/downloads), it will start the migration process.

I have written the installer such that it will not accidentally overwrite an existing installation on DSM 7. This is why any DSM 7 server data must be removed before the DSM 6 data (or platform server) can be imported & processed.

I am still not having any luck.

  1. My DSM 6 metadata still exists.
2)Did you mean I was supposed to uninstall the Plex package with the ERASE option or can I undo the DSM 7 upgrade?
  2. I downloaded the Plex file from the Plex.tv/downloads for a NAS server. It did install, but it only took a few seconds and no Plex data migration took place as far as I know…

In the summary of changes for point #2 there is " You will need to grant permission for System Internal User - PlexMediaServer just as you previously did for user Plex . This change was unavoidable.

Going to Control Panel, selecting PlexMediaServer, then Edit there is a tab called Permissions and another called Advanced Permissions. In Advanced there is a checkbox for ‘Enable Advance Share Permissions’. As of yet I have NOT checked this option. I don’t know if this is the System Internal User setting mentioned above or not…

Please don’t touch any of the “PlexMediaServer” settings.

That shared folder is controlled by DSM for Plex. It’s only user-facing for convenience.

Sometimes there is a second ghost installation buried in DSM 7.

Please do the Uninstall + ERASE again.

Next, when you install, it should take more time / complain if you don’t have permissions correct for the “Plex” shared folder.

If DSM shows, at any point, “Operation Failed”. Ignore it.
There is strange handling (security) in how long applications should take to install.

Because the data is being processed and moved so PMS can run, it’s not safe to do AFTER installing . (No way to notify you when it’s done)

Should this happen, look in the “Plex” shared folder.

Migration.log will show you what it’s doing.

The last task is “Cleaning: /volumeX/Plex”

I kind of learned my lesson last time, so I didn’t touch any settings for any of the folders. I just got home, just to be certain, I am uninstalling Plex, not DSM 7. I looked on how to downgrade the OS but I didn’t find anything definitive, so I didn’t do anything.

I will Uninstall Erase Plex, then try re-installing. The download I should be using is Plexmedia server for Synology DSM 7, Intel 64 bit. I have redownloaded that file, and I will probably go ahead and delete the previous Plex install, but I want to make certain I am using the correct download.

As long as you’re using a download from Plex.tv for your machine, you’re good.

The reason not to use Package Store is because it’s too old. It’s a beta app from before DSM 7 was final release. It’s not backward compatible anymore.

As of PMS 1.24.2.4973, when DSM 7 was final release , I was able to release the last things in the Plex package for DSM 7 which needed to be there.

if you want to read what I was finally able to bring together, it’s here.

Deleted, Erased, and Downloaded, and I got a different message when I clicked on manual install and browsed to the file:Synology - DSM 7.0 Release - Plex Installation (Not Operational) Issues - #3237.

This is a pop up window (in case the link above doesn’t work) that has "Plex Media Server -Installation Options at the top of the display pop up, then there are 2 options:

  1. Normal Installation.
  2. Install using Plex Claim Token.
Option 2 also has an explanation in red that says “New or Lost servers only”, and then there’s a link to claim token string from a link “Get Plex Claim Token- leave blank if not used” follow by a box for the claim token.

Since the Repair option when I tried just updating the DSM screwed things up I don’t know if I should get this token or not.

@ethompson210_abbnebraska_com

You want the Normal Installation because you want to preserve all the identity information that already exists in your DSM 6 Plex server.

If it installs quickly, Don’t be alarmed,

In that case:

  1. Verify you still have your metadata in the Plex shared folder THEN
  2. Uninstall + ERASE again.

( it’ll erase the other errant DSM 7 data which was floating around in there )
