Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

The install only took 10 seconds or so. I looked at the folders that I created to hold the videos I have, they are stored in a folder that I named ‘PlexMovies’ and all of the files I expected were there, and the music all seems to be in the music folder I called ‘PlexMusic’.

The movies are all .mp4 files and the music is mostly in a FLAC format with a few .mp3.

The install says it was successful, but I got a popup I don’t remember from this weekend, that has 7 steps to go through if Plex can’t see the media. Looking at the Permissions for PlexMovies I have nothing selected under Group Permissions. Same for PlexMusic. The new pop up box says to change permissions from Local Users to System Internal Users, but its only dash on my system right now.

I will Uninstall and Erase again.

Installed, Erased then manually installed the Synology DSM 7 install again. Same result, only took a few seconds to install and the permissions for the PlexMovies and PlexMusic just show a dash and not any named permission.

@ethompson210_abbnebraska_com

We can ignore your media folders for now. We will add their permissions later.

For now, Please make certain you still have the server data
(Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server)

If that’s intact, you can uninstall + erase again. (I know – DSM 7 is a pain)
(there can be up 2 buried copies of errant server data in there. One from 3744 and one from Repair).

I have a feeling that this isn’t good news. There aren’t any sub folders or data in the the Plex folder.

No. this isn’t good new.

It means you do need to start over, unfortunately.

That being the ‘state of the onion’ :confused:

Let’s get the permissions set so Plex can see your media.

This FAQ shows how to set the permissions for your Media shared folders so Plex can read them.

When you install Plex and set it up, it’ll be able to find things just like it did under DSM 6.

Well, thanks for all the time you spent helping me. The music/movies themselves are still there, I guess I have something to do for a little while. Its been a while since I originally set up my system and I used a lot of YouTube help videos that aren’t going to be applicable anymore, but if I have a question I will ask first. But I’ll read the FAQ you attached and try not to need to bother you again…

I’m here if you need me. I hope I put enough info into the FAQ to make the transition easier.

Hi @ChuckPa firstly thank you for being so helpful to so many people out there getting this sorted. I have spent the last hour or so reading through and not sure if my problem is specifically covered.
I have a DS418play and upgraded a few days ago to DSM 7 without any inkling of the steps to migrate Plex. We switched out a router at the same time so thought it was that preventing connection, now I know it wasn’t as I put the old router back and still won’t connect.
So after migrating to DSM7 and Plex not connecting on my Samsung Smart TV, I went looking to upgrade Plex and not finding it on the normal list (didn’t check Beta) I went and downloaded the latest version from Plex.tv/downloads. I have done a full erase of Plex (as per your notes) and reinstalled the Intel 64 bit version, downloaded again from your website (1.25.3.5409-7000). It has created a Plexmediaserver folder but has not created any user (plexmedia I believe?) so I am unable to set the permissions accordingly. There is no Plex folder at all anymore, I think I might have deleted that in an attempt to erase everything and start again now I’m on DSM7.
All my media still resides in the same folder (video).
There are almost 600 threads in your very informative forum but can’t spot one where someone has started from same position or doesn’t seem to have the user created during the install.
Thanks in advance for any direction!

@sistaveley

  1. You’re correct, there is no “Plex” shared folder anymore. DSM 7 forced us to change to be “PlexMediaServer” (to match the package name).

  2. DSM 7 also forced us to change the username. For consistency sake, we chose “PlexMediaServer”.

  3. DSM 7 separates “Local Users” from “apps” (which it now calls “System Internal Users”).

  4. When you grant permission for Plex to read your media shared folders, you grant permission to “System Internal User” “PlexMediaServer” :slight_smile:

Ah - the key thing I didn’t spot was the drop down in the permissions tab to switch user types from “local user” to “system internal user”.
Possibly very obvious for some but apologies didn’t even spot that!!
Will revert back to instuctions now and see if I can get it to work!!

@ChuckPa there was I thinking I was somehow special to all the others… thanks to you I am back online all working thank you so much! Now if I can only find someone suitably helpful from either Synology or Linksys to help me with the necessary port forwarding giving that my Linksys router is not a recognised model for the auto-port forwarding! ;0)
Thanks again for your quick turnaround!

I tried that. Still doesn’t give me the option. See attached pic.
I even tried on several different devices.

I also tried to download the package from Plex and install it manually but it said that that package is not compatible with my version of DSM. I think it was looking for an older version.

@netspear

  1. which version of DSM do you use?
    – DSM 6 packages are listed as “Synology”
    – DSM 7 packages are listed as “Synology (DSM 7)”

Newest version of DSM 7

This is the error I get when I try to install it manually

Thank you.

You accidentally downloaded and tried to install the DSM 6 version.

Package Center is telling you that it wants the firmware to be older than DSM 7.0-40000 (the beta launch) in order to install — which is DSM 6.

Download the version for (DSM7) and you’ll be ok.

Ok. So I found the right one and installed it.
I tried the regular install and the version using the claim code. But I’m both of them it said not authorized when I tried to launch it.

@netspear

Are you opening Plex using the Synology’s LAN IP or are you attempting to use the QuickConnect.to URL?

The URL, if active, breaks claiming. It’s a bug in DSM I’ve not yet been able to work around (but have some ideas)

I just uninstalled it and reinstalled it using the claim code. And tried to login using the ip:32400
Gave me the same results

But when I installed it. It had a pop-up saying I claimed it. And it shows up in my authorized devices list.
