Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

is your phone using WiFi as well and in the same 192.168.200.x subnet?

What you describe if PMS default security prohibiting cross-subnet/remote address claiming.

Not same subnet. But I’ll try switching subnets and trying to claim again

That worked perfectly!!
Thank you so much!!!

Hi I have Synology DSM 7.0.1-42218, when I tried to manually install the Plex version PlexMediaServer-1.25.3.5409-f11334058-armv7neon_DSM7. It says it’s incompatible error message. What should I do?

@Cypac

Which Synology do you have ?

There are 3 arm processors: ARMv7hf , ARMv7neon, and ARMv8

Hey ChuckPa, just want to say thank you for all your help! I had a similar issue to another user who’s data didn’t migrate during installation, and your earlier help to them worked great.

Thanks for doing a great job!

I’m having one final problem, but I think its a minor one. When I open Plex on my computer or phone or Apple TV I have 2 Synology DS218+ named accounts. One has no connections to my media and the other does. I think that the one that just has connections errors is somehow left over from my older DSM 6 based account, If I select the other server (which is actually the same Synology NAS) then my username and Plex Pass all show up and I DO have access to my songs and movies, on all my devices. Is there something I need to turn off in Permissions somewhere that could still be trying to access the Plex folder, even though it no longer exists?

Hi there
Not sure if I am in the right place for this question, but I hope to get some help.

I recently purchased the Synology DS920+ to expand my Plex library. I am coming from an older model: DS713+

On my old model everything runs smoothly, but when I start using the new DS920, my Plex media Server Software keeps crashing. After a few minutes of using the Software shuts itself down.

What do I do wrong or what can I do to get it to work?

@ethompson210_abbnebraska_com

Go to Settings - Authorized Devices - Server (Dropdown)

Find the oldest (longest time since seen) of the two duplicates and REMOVE it.

Hoping someone can help. I failed to follow @ChuckPa instructions properly while attempting the DSM 6 to DSM 7 upgrade. I did NOT uninstall PMS on DSM 6 BEFORE upgrading to DSM 7. DSM 7 is now installed and a prompt in the Package Center has Plex Media Server “repair required”. I don’t know what to do now.
Equipment: NAS Synology DS1019+, Libraries on Vol 1.

UPDATE: I went ahead and selected Repair. It then installed Plex, asked me for a path for the PMS log files which I left at default /volume1/MyShare. It then gave an error that plexmediaserver didn’t install because of permissions which as mentioned in @ChuckPa documents you have to edit the Plex user permissions for 'system internal user" to give full access to plexmediaserver. After doing this I went back and restarted the installation. It completed successfully and after selecting the libraries, etc. Plex is up and running although on ver 1.21.0.3744. Will have to update to 1.25.3.5409 manually.

@andy_wiredout_com

:scream:

NEVER click “Repair” !!!

Given you worked your way through it (Congrats by the way!)

Do you now: Have an otherwise-empty “Plex” shared folder?

When you perform the final upgrade away from that broken Beta version, you’ll have all your metadata in PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server

Yesterday I updated my DS916+ to DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 2. I removed PMS before the upgrade and verified I still have my complete Plex shared folder with contents. While addressing all of the other maintenace involved with the OS upgrade, I chose the Beta version of PMS. I granted Read/Write permissions for the PlexMediaServer account to my old Plex shared folder and the shared folder with my media. I granted custom full priveledges for PlexMediaServer account to the new PlexMediaServer shared folder. It installed but did not migrate my old metadata. I tried Repair (sorry, Chuck). I have since tried multiple uninstalls using Erase then repeating the process using the latest download package on the Plex website (PlexMediaServer-1.25.4.5426-eb46d070e-x86_64_DSM7.spk). Each install has been successful but no migration. I have been checking for the migration log file in the Plex folder and it has never appeared. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Depending in your installation it might take some time until the migration log appears. In my case it was about 1 hour.
How long did you wait?

Was the installation IMMEDIATELY successful ?

If so, then there was an existing DSM 7 installation data blocking it.

Did you hit Repair to fix a broken Plex install ?
What shows in the Plex shared folder?

Thank you for the quick response!

I apologize that some answers will be a little vague because after multiple attempts my memory is getting fuzzy. I believe my first install was successful – I hit repair in response to the missing metadata migration.

Plex shared folder has multi-language warnings “Please do not place any media files here”, a “tmp_transcoding” folder an empty “Application Support” folder and a populated “Library/Application Support” folder.

Hi tisler! I did read your posts here so I gave my second to last attempt overnight before trying yet again today. I would say the overnight was at least 12 hours. ChuckPa has responded so I am very hopeful he can get me through this. I am happy to see your migration worked out!

12 hours should be more than enough.
ChuckPa is the pro here. So you should be in good hands :slight_smile:

There have been a FEW cases where permissions weren’t entirely correct and “Migration.log” didn’t appear at all.

That said, it kept right on migrating the files. ( Resource Monitor / Task Manager → Processes → looking for PlexMedia+ (PlexMediaServer username doing things).

It will make 3 full passes of the files (top → bottom)

  • Change ownership
  • Set Permissions
  • Fix Symbolic Links (upgrade them) for the metadata

It will then move (which SOMETIMES Synology does as a COPY – painful and slow).

Afterwards, it will remove the warning files from the “Plex” share.

Where is it at now?
Does Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server' exist and is full? Does PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server` contain any files ?

I have not seen PlexMedia+ ever pop up in Resource Monitor. I do see multiple “Plex Script Host” processes and “PMS RunServer.” Old Plex folder has not changed. It is still full. New “PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Medis Server” has 6 folders: Cache, Plu-in Support, Plug-ins, Logs, Crash Reports, Codecs. It also has Preferences.xml.

@DukeDD

Given your “Plex” shared folder is still full.

  1. Stop Plex
  2. Uninstall + ERASE (to erase the contents of PlexMediaServer – which is an errant one)
  3. After it is uninstalled,
  4. Install again (ANY version higher than 1.22.3.4973 – current is preferable)
  5. It will challenge you for permissions on the Plex shared folder if they are not set correctly. Follow the instructions in the popup.
  6. When all instructions are correct, It will silently sit “Installing”.
  7. DO NOT close that DSM window - Open a new tab to DSM
  8. Check for “Migration.log” in the Plex shared folder after 2-3 minutes

A full & complete “Migration.log” looks like this:

Plex Media Server migration to DSM 7 started: Sat Oct 30 15:26:16 EDT 2021
=== Sat Oct 30 15:26:16 EDT 2021 === Start: Change ownership
=== Sat Oct 30 15:29:45 EDT 2021 === Completed: Change ownership
=== Sat Oct 30 15:29:45 EDT 2021 === Start: Convert symbolic links
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed:  Convert symbolic links
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Start: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Start: Clean /volume1/Plex
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed: Clean /volume1/Plex

This is how you know it’s done.

NOTE: IN SOME STRANGE CASES this “Uninstall + Erase” is performed twice. This happens when “Repair” is pressed after DSM 7 upgrade but not observed by all users.

If Installation is again quick,

  • Check the Plex shared folder contents
  • If still full – REPEAT the above until it does engage.

If it does not engage by the 3rd attenpt, please notify me immediately as there’s a different problem.
