This part is wired in.
If you’re set to Public update channel , it will tell you when there is an update.
I’d like to just stick to one consistently. Each update or load runs the risk of losing a media library and having to claim one of the others or nothing at all from my view in the load screen. I updated from here on plex.tv, but in settings for the newly (not) claimed media library I have now, I get asked to update every time I try to save my settings. On the claim library/update screen, I select claim library, and update manually, both on the NAS and desktop. Then I’m back at the start of that again. I’ve also tried deleting the desktop app.
Strangely, my IOS app is running the most current library well right off the bat.
I’m not sure why you wouldn’t want to claim the server.
I have 4 servers here (all development systems) plus my main server.
It all just works a whole lot better when they are claimed to your account.
My upload stinks so sharing my media isn’t an option.
When notified of updates, I do watch to see if it’s an update I want.
If I don’t, then no harm.
Nobody but me sees the update notification.
I only see it when I’m in the Settings pages.
The notification isn’t visible anywhere else.
Sounds good. I just don’t know how to claim all of them. After sign in I get a warning message that the media library (only one each time) is not trusted. I claim it, and then it could be gone the next login. I’ll look at being less trigger happy on updates, too.
I can help you get them all claimed.
Tell me what you have and I’ll show you how to get through each of them.
DSM 7 is the easiest. The installer now has built-in claiming support.
I am concerned why it needs to be reclaimed every time. That’s a problem because it should only be claimed one time.
Can you stop plex on one of the machines this is happening and make a ZIP file of the log files in the Logs folder ?
I got your logs. ![]()

Let’s start there
I’ve had Plex installed across many NAS for a long time. I’ve finally upgraded my Synology 218+ from 6 to 7, and followed the correct steps for permissions etc. Good there.
However, I was expecting all metadata to come along for the ride, but that does not seem to be the case. My installation originally had Plex installed in a folder like this:
/Plex/Library/Application Support/Metadata/Albums
where as the new Plex install looks like this:
/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Metadata/Albums
I spent a long time fixing music metadata in the past, and things were in a happy place. I also had some dope playlists setup.
My question- Can I simply copy over the old album metadata into the new album folder? I assume i need to stop Plex before doing so, but nothing else has changed during the migration.
This is what i followed:
thx
Ok, I’m sure i’m about the 1000th one to do this, but i’ve currently done:
- Upgraded to DSM 7
- Uninstalled the DSM 6 plex package (was installed from plex.tv, not package center)
- Installed DSM 7 plex package
- Did not receive the Error on first install
- Went back and set PlexMediaServer user permissions on the old Plex folder
- Now have old Plex and new PlexMediaServer folders
- Decided to stop and ask for next steps before I mess anything up further…
Is the Plex shared folder empty except for Migration.log ?
Plex still has all orig files(Library/Application Support/…), no Migration.log in there at this time.
Then you messed up ![]()
You didn’t do something right
When you install on DSM 7, the installer automatically will move your metadata for you
Do you want to scrap the partial DSM 7 setup and move all of your DSM 6 data over?
Yes, definitely! I do want to migrate my DSM 6 install over, just didn’t want to break anything further. I’m fine with removing the new package install and starting the process over now that the Plex folder has the PlexMediaServer account permissions set (with apply to all files and folders)
OK… let’s do the first steps. (I’m going to go slow instead of blasting in one post – if that’s ok? )
Uninstall Plex with the ERASE option.
This removes the partial DSM 7 installation you have.
( The installer will not migrate if it sees any data in the PlexMediaServer shared folder)
Also, I need to confirm which version of PMS you’re installing?
– From Plex.tv/downloads ?
– From Package Center ?
Uninstalled with red ERASE option
I was installing with plex.tv package, PlexMediaServer-1.28.2.6106-44a5bbd28-x86_64_DSM7.spk, through the Manual Install button like I used in DSM 6
currently see this after uninstall:
Good
-
Yes. RED erase . Go ahead and (Control Panel - Shared Folders) delete the PlexMediaServer shared folder. It will get recreated when we install again.
-
Yes, 1.28.2 (or 1.28.1 – public) your choice.
Now, Please take a read here.
Pay particular attention to this step:
- Set permissions for user
PlexMediaServerto have Full Control
-AND, MOST IMPORTANT PART- - Checking the box to “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files”
ok I’m at the reinstall step after ensuring that the permissions are still set on the original Plex folder, with apply all, and wondering if I should be using the Normal install or Claim?
That works. When you’re done, the permissions should show as “Full Control”.
Ok/save.
Return to the one which shows Plex and PlexMediaServer …
“Apply to this folder, subfolders, and files”
Should I be doing a Normal install or install with claim token, when hoping to migrate from the existing install? I’m assuming Normal, but don’t want to mess up again ![]()
You can do a normal install.
Your Preferences.xml, which is your ownership, comes over with the metadata.
AFTER it’s moved, it if gives you any grief, we will hit it with the claim token.
We do Normal now because the Claim Token is only valid for 5 minutes and we don’t know how much metadata you have to move
Once it sits at “Installing” … Don’t panic. It might take a few minutes to a few hours. Depends how much you have
If DSM complains – Ignore it. Stay on that page
You can always open a new tab to the Syno and watch the progress of “Migration.log”.
It’ll say “Cleaning” when it’s done
Looks like migration happened this time. Plex folder only has Migration.log now, and had no errors.
I’ve added the permission for PlexMediaServer user to my Shared Folder that I use for my libraries.
Looks like everything is good now, library is intact, watch history / progress is there when I view on the web and mobile app!
