The new video player on Plex for Android TV is terrible there's not even closed captions underneath it or quality that's terrible

Thank you kindly for that. Can def get that figured out.

Ill post the logs tomorrow regardless as I’m interested to see what anyone can come up with since These problems don’t come up on The old player, Emby, Jellyfin. I should also give it a try on my Roku or firestick and see if they give the same error or not. I no longer use either of those as they don’t do HDR Atmos, but I will give em a shot tomorrow as well to try and narrow this down

May I ask which logs specifically I should post? Also I should just put them in my post or send them in a dm?

I assume just the server log is needed not the whole zip file?

Thank you kindly for any and all help especially in these weird times

Logs for new player: playing file, show freezes same spot reproducable every time. Happens with multiple shows movies etc. Sometimes gicea the error that the network isn’t fast enough when it clearly is. Hardwired Ethernet Gigabit and up speeds reported on shield, switch and server.

Same file on old player and other streaming apps works perfectly fine.

Another thing I’ve noticed is the new player sometimes seems to do direct streams audio for AC3 old player direct plays it.

Edit: latest beta on shield is installed on this log

Thank you for any and all help anyone is able to provide. Times are crazy and weird out there and it’s appreciated

Edit2: When show freezes I can skip past the spot it hangs with ff and it works again but generally will do it again. And will reproduce it again every time played at the same spot.

Edit:3 Added shield logs

Plex Media Server.log (1.0 MB)
logging.txt (1.2 MB)

If your seeing the player freeze about every 30 mins then try…

setting it to zero… Network Tab…

Currently already set to 0

That was fixed in 7.30, and is no longer needed as a work around

Thanks, I’ve added it to my list!

some feedback on the new player UI

  • as already mentioned - please put subtitle/audio/video controls that are currently to the LEFT of the player controls, move them UNDER the player controls.
  • please make the left/right time line factors increase exponentially (smaller increments first then increasingly larger increments)
  • PIP icon (where applicable), move to top right corner
  • streaming info overlay/geek info (options for simple details & debug details)

controller actions;

  • left/right skip back/forward without bringing up ui (same as current)

  • up bring up player controls (play/pause/skip left/right)

  • up twice goes to timeline slider

  • up three times goes to PIP

  • down once to subtitle/audio/video options

  • down twice to chapter/episode list

  • down three times to related hub

  • down four times to current playing list (where applicable)

  • finally, apply above to ALL client players, so we can have a consistent player UI for all devices.

I’ve passed along the UI feedback to our UX team, but I don’t think it’s likely we’ll have the exact same Player UI on all clients. Generally, we try and make things as similar as we can, but in some cases (and Player UI is one of them), there are platform conventions that we try to follow, so the user doesn’t have to think about how to use our app compared to other apps on the same device. Apple TV is a great example of this, where the Player UI is very minimal, and introducing our new Android Player UI there wouldn’t be the best fit. We aim to have all the same information available, but the layout may be a little different, depending on the platform

UI understood, but personally I’d rather have app player consistency, instead of platform consistency.

Controls; should not be any reason that all players (that are controlled by remote at least) do not have the same up/down/left/right control actions.

understood that touch ui may have some difference (but still should be kept minimal as possible) than remote controlled/mouse/keyboard ui.

Yesterday the error came back to me. So i tried a few files and like before, the new video player only plays files with 2 Channel Stereo Sound. Every file containing 5.1 or more channels failed playing. For testing i switched back to the old player and it worked, again switching back to the new player and it’s showing the error. I exported some logs for you after my tests, can i send them via PM?

Thanks for your help!

Not quite sure where to post this, but the new player completely fails to play 720p h264/aac videos downloaded from the BBC iplayer. The old player, selected in the options, is fine. It just crashes with a “restart everything” type popup. Nothing in server logs of any use.

If it’s the app that’s crashing / not working, you’ll probably want the client logs, and not the server logs

Yes, but it’s not a crash in the end. It seems to be overnight deep analysis - see my separate thread I posted a couple of days ago here: [BUG] Overnight deep analysis stops some videos playing on nvidia shield TV

OP you will be happy to know the new player is still hot garbage, and Plex now forces it to be the default and changes it back even when you manually switch it to the old player.

Time to switch to Emby.

The new player works fine here.

The recent 8.1 update seems to have resolved most of my issues with the 2019 tube shield.

Since a couple of days the new video player was turned on again. Every time I wanted to play a video, the app crashed. It took me 2 days to figure out the new video player was switched on again… after disabling it, everything is working fine again.

Chiming in to say the new player sucks and is horrible trash for idiots.

The video playback completely stops after an episode or two of a show. Then you have to fast forward or rewind to get the video “un stuck”.

Dear god I hate this new video player

Well, as I’ve stated before, the old player will be going away and soon it will only be the new player. If you’re seeing issues, please document what happens, and provide some logs so we can investigate :slightly_smiling_face:
