TheTVDB metadata - V3 API and related issues

Hi @ChuckPa

I am having a similar issue. Just saw this topic here, so posting here as well. So for new TV Series PLEX wasn’t loading information from TVDB. Did the plex dance and then lost the metadata for all tv series. After 12 hours of not touching it recovered metadata for only 1/3 of the tv shows. Furthermore, I noticed if i click match manually it takes about 7 minutes to get back with a result. Let me if I can share any logs or do some troubleshooting steps.

I’ve still got that issue with 1 episode only, as far as I can see.
Here are my logs - I refreshed the metadata to that episode right before downloading these logs;
Plex Media Server Logs_2019-12-07_16-08-47.zip (4.6 MB)

I made a thread for it here though;
https://forums.plex.tv/t/metadata-for-tv-episode-not-being-added/502358

3 posts were split to a new topic: Plex not scanning all episodes

10 posts were merged into an existing topic: Plex not scanning all episodes

It would be best to diagnose the issue if you plex dance the files again, then provide your PMS log package.

Edit - Actually, I’m going to break this out to it’s own thread. This really has nothing to do with the API issue.

I had broken my issue out to another thread but given before I could load dvd ordering and now someone else was reporting an issue in another thread and someone responded on mine as well with the same issue think it could be related to the API changes.

Any DVD orderings previously added work and if I swap this show to airdate it will pull metadata. Just The dvd ordering metadata specifically is not downloading.

Are there any news regarding this issue?
I am still getting Error404 when pulling the metadata from thetvdb.

Just want to confirm that if TheTVDB is pulling all metadata outside of posters, I am experiencing this yet-to-be-resolved issue being discussed in this thread?

Here’s what I get in my tvdb log when trying to match a show. (In this case, Breaking Bad).

Your logs do show that there is an issue. But I don’t think it is the same API issue. In your case, the calls are not even getting through properly. Almost like something is blocking the calls to TheTVDB. Are you running a reverse proxy or have a firewall that might be blocking something?

I just tested Breaking Bad and TheTVDB is returning the information properly for me.

I do have a Pi-hole in place, but I just tried with it disabled and got the same result. Additionally, I am able to copy and paste the URLs into a browser and see the image with no issue. Do you know what else I could try?

This resolved my particular issue: Movie and TV Posters not Loading After PMS-2058

Server version: 1.18.2.2079 on Shield 2015 (P2571)
PMS data on internal (adopted) storage, user accessible - 128GB SD card

I’ve been able to capture the PMS TheTVDB agent hanging while refreshing metadata on a TV series.

Summary:

  • Attempt to Refresh Metadata on TV shows; works as expected for 5-30 mins.
  • TheTVDB agent hangs, show metadata is not retrieved; client performance tanks.
  • PMS service stop/start does not fix the issue.
  • Shield reboot does fix the issue immediately; performance returns to normal.
  • No other intervention is required.

The issue is consistent and replicatable. Logs attached.

While refreshing metadata on ‘Falling Skies’, something happens between S05E08 at 10:37:58.298 and S05E09 at 10:38:22.068. com.plexapp.agents.thetvdb.log stops dead, and com.plexapp.system.log starts throwing critical exceptions.

From the Plex client, browsing to the show times out and shows ‘There was an unexpected error loading this item.’ Returning to the library is much slower than usual, and posters seem to take a longer time to appear.

I attempt to stop the PMS service on the Shield; the GUI continues to show PMS as ‘Running’. I copied logs manually from the Shield while the service was stopped/hung:

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-12-14_10-58-00 - manual copy - service stop.zip (6.3 MB)

I started the PMS service from the GUI and tried to Refresh Metadata on Falling Skies again. This did not work; the behaviour was the same as prior to the service stop/start. Performance from the Plex client was noticeably slower, and I had trouble with the ‘Download Logs’ button in the client timing out. I copied logs from the Shield manually:

Plex Media Server Logs_2019-12-14_11-08-00 - manual copy - service start.zip (5.9 MB)

I rebooted the Shield and tried to Refresh Metadata on Falling Skies again. This did work; the agent performed as expected, and loaded all metadata correctly. Performance was back to normal and as expected.

I’ve found the issue - it was the Shield’s SD card interface!

Happy 2020. This is still an ongoing issue. Pulling metadata (of any type) from TVDB is still totally hit or miss. Some days it works. Some days it does not (for me, right this moment). -__-

The problem has seems to have started again today. At least, it took several “refresh metadata” operations to get artwork.

In talking with developers working on other software projects that also uses the “TVDB V3 API” it seems like the developers at TVDB keep making changes to the API for what ever reason, things that worked find yesterday don’t today. Not to say it’s broken just that it’s frustrating a lot of people.

Yup, and don’t forget Important information regarding TV artwork in Plex which will come into play soon.

Running version 1.18.6.2368 and TheTVDB is consistently, entirely broken for me. Searching for “Mythic Quest” returns no results. Searching for 362829 (Mythic Quest’s TVDB ID) returns a search result, lets me select it, and it works perfectly from then.
