TV episode matching problem

So I don’t know what the heck is going on, but honestly for 4 years I’ve never felt I fully understood the configuration of metadata agents. The backend UI continues to be extremely baffling.

Today’s struggle is with NOVA. I have a bunch of random episodes I’ve put onto Plex. They used to be all matched correctly and automatically with the SxxExx I had before, but then for some reason started getting matched wrong… including existing ones getting changed. So now I’ve been going through changing the SxxExx to match what’s on theTVDB which I guess is different than what I had before (which had been working, mysteriously). But I’ve got one stubborn one. S41E15. It should be “Rise of the Hackers”: https://www.thetvdb.com/series/nova/seasons/41

But for some reason, this keeps matching to episode 5 instead (“Great Cathedral Mystery”). Which is even more mysterious because that’s one of the ones I also have already and it’s matching to “Great Cathedral Mystery” correctly as S41E05. So I have S41E05 and S41E15 both being matched as the same show.

The filename I’m using is: “PBS NOVA (2014) - S41E15 - Rise of the Hackers.mp4”

Any thoughts?

(PS: I don’t like how I’m forced to choose an additional tag to post when absolutely none of them apply to my environment or this post… so I chose “server-linux” even though I’m not using Linux. This new forum software sucks so bad)

mp4 files can contain embedded metadata. If the file internally still contains a different title or season/episode number, Plex will mismatch it, unless you tell Plex to disregard embedded metadata:

Go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards, perform the Plex Dance, otherwise Plex won’t “forget” the wrong match it has in its database for this file.

Ok, well… progress? After all that, it no longer is misidentified, but now just comes up generically as “Episode 15”.

That might be because there’s no ‘Nova (2014)’.
