Update "Continue Watching" with Next Unwatched Episode from Watchlist

If we mark episodes (or seasons) as “Watched ” in our Watchlist, the next available episode should show up in the Continue Watching list under the Recommended tab on the Home Screen.

Example #1

Currently doing a re-watch of Star Trek: Deep Space 9. I went into the Plex Watchlist and manually marked the first 6 seasons as played. I was expecting the Season Premiere of Season 7 to show up under my “Continue Watching” so I could just jump right in, but it did not.

Example #2

As part of the above example, I marked that I have access to both Netflix and Paramount+. In addition, I know that one of the Plex servers I access also has all 7 seasons of Deep Space 9. Since I did not specify which service I was watching Deep Space Nine on, if the Season 7 premiere showed up under “Continue Watching”, I should have the option to choose whether to watch it on Netflix, Paramount+, or the other Plex server.

Current behavior -

  • I have to remember that I was watching Deep Space Nine.
  • I have to remember that Deep Space Nine is in my Watchlist.
  • I have to click on the tab to select Watchlist.
  • I have to find Deep Space Nine, because there is no filtering.
  • Once I open Deep Space Nine, I have to remember that I’m on Season 7.
  • Then I have to find the next epiode that has not been “Marked as Played”.
  • Then I can finally decide where I want to watch it from.

Expected behavior -

  • I mark multiple seasons as “Watched”.
  • The next episode I haven’t watched, regardless of service, should apppear in “Continue Watching”.
  • I see all available places I can stream the episode from, then pick the one I want.
  • If I access the episode from Plex, regardless of whether it is another Plex server or a streaming service, automatically mark it as Watched within the Plex Watchlist. This gets around the privacy because user is marking it Watched by starting it within the application. If user does not end up watching it, user is responsible for going back into Watchlist and mark as “Unwatched”.
  • User watches multiple episodes.
  • [Updated: 04/13/2022] Either the user goes back to Watchlist to manually update with episodes watched, or Plex automatically syncs with a service such as Trakt or JustWatch.
  • Next unwatched episode shows up in Continue Watching.
  • [Added 04/14/2022] When new, unwatched, episodes, or seasons, are released for shows on the Watchlist, they are automatically added to Continue Watching.

You read my mind.

I have an update to this, for those interested. I don’t know when this was added, or if it was always there, but there is a “Continue Watching” under the Watchlist > Recommended tab. While I would like the option to add this to the Home screen, I guess it is better than nothing. However, I have noticed that

    • it does not always show new episodes when they become available
    • it is not able to pull available VOD from cable services. For example, I have Battlebots on my Watchlist. On Thursday, my Tivo failed to record it, but the episode was listed in my Continue Watching. So I opened Plex on my iPad, went to Watchlist > Continue Watching > Battlebots (latest episode), but it said no streaming options available. When I clicked deeper into “Go to show”, it showed the Battlebots was available on DirectTV. Clicking on that it opened the DirectTV webpage instead of the DirectTV app on my iPad. So I then had to manually open the DirectTV app, search for Battlebots, and there was the latest episode VOD.
