Update to 1.20.1 causing "daily crash"

Server Version#: 1.20.1.3252
Player Version#: 4.34.4
OS: Linux Mint 17.3

This has been happening since upgrading from 1.19.4.2902 to 1.20. Every morning/afternoon for roughly the last week when I go to check it, it’ll be down again.

Trying to restart the service through the terminal (sudo service plexmediaserver restart) doesn’t seem to actually bring it back up, and I have to fully reboot the server for it to work. Once back up, It’ll run fine for a while… long enough to watch a couple of movies but by the next day, it’ll have crashed again.

It’s time to get rid of Mint (which is not a supported distro and is known for being unstable), it is actually Ubuntu 14 underneath. Ubuntu 14 is not supported due to its glibc version is too old .

I can work on that, although I’ve been using the same box for something like 4 years now and this issue happened right when the plex update was applied. Unfortunately I don’t really understand what the logs are saying is causing the crash, can somebody at least translate what plex is complaining about when it does crash?

I can work on upgrading my HW/OS, although that’ll be a larger project.

The reason it’s finally catching up with you is because,

  1. As of 1.15.0, Plex updated it’s runtime (from the OS) library dependency to version 2.14.1. Glibc is currently 2.28 in most distributions. We didn’t pick anything ‘bleeding edge’.

  2. We needed to update because some of the functionality inside PMS needed it.

  3. What you’re seeing now is that requirement failing in the older glibc you have because PMS code has moved on past what it can do.

If you’re going to redo the OS, i have a recommendation.

  1. Create a /home partition and a /home/plex directory (owned by plex:plex)
  2. Move your metadata there,
  3. If/when you ever need to update / change / reinstall the OS, all your data is still safe.

I will help with that if you need it.

That would be great, and I really appreciate the help and the explanation.

I don’t suppose I can just reinstall 1.19 over the top, in order to roll back the change and get my server stable again? Never tried downgrading before and I don’t know if it works that way.

As far as a plex-owned home location, I’ve been eyeing a synology drive for a while now, and will probably take the opportunity to finally move to NAS for storage.

You can uninstall and then re-install 1.19.
The data is held safe during uninstallation.

Be advised, Plex.tv will soon be changing the minimum supported PMS level to 1.15.2 (approx).

If you use remote access, you’ll find it no longer works.
Your Plex apps may also no longer work correctly as they , and your server, must synchronize through Plex.tv

The better decision here is to bite the bullet and upgrade the OS.

Remember Ubuntu 17 (which Mint is based on) was discontinued as of Ubuntu 18. (odd years are completely discontinued when next even year is released).

I am experiencing the same problem since updating to 1.20.
I am on Windows 10 Pro fully updated as well.
Been running on my Lenovo M720q tiny with intel 6c/12t with no issues for months until the update.

I just turned the logs on so I can add them here tomorrow.

Be advised, This is a Linux thread. I cannot be of assistance here.

Recommend you create a fresh thread and tag server-windows (remove the server-linux default tag)

Sorry about that.
I found another thread for this issue on windows.

Thanks!

Finally got my new hardware yesterday, and I’ll be migrating my server over to a Synology DS1621xs+.

Searching for any walkthroughs specific to moving from Linux to Synology NAS…?
