VBOX DVR tuning issue for Sydney Australia

Server Version#: 1.27.2.5929-7000
Player Version#:
Tuner Make/Model: VBox 3442
Guide/Lineup name: Multiple - 7.yourtv.com.au; 2.yourtv.com.au; ABC TV, 7 Sydney
Using XMLTV?: Yes
Channel number/Name: 7.yourtv.com.au; 2.yourtv.com.au; ABC TV, 7 Sydney

Logs will be submitted by user shortly.

I am the support tech for distributor Adonis Technology in AU and NZ. Currently the issue is being pushed back and forth, and has become confused with unrelated problems in a previous post. The ultimate issue for this user is not plex connection or tuning, it appears to rest with the XML.

Background
The user is able to tune into channels in Sydney, but not all of them. VLC plays the streams fine, and has the correct url path. However, when tuning the same channels through Plex, they fail.

USER: please supply the logs, and a screenshot of the error when you try and stream one of the affected channels.

User reports the following as failing in Plex, but working in VLC

Reviewing the information with VBox it appears to us that the issue relates to a malformed or incorrect xml pass. What we need to confirm is, 1 has anyone else reported an issue? And can you confirm the xml to path as listed above?

Reviewing the XML, there does appear to be a difference with the plex provided url compared to the vlc one. Can we do a comparison from the xml encoding please?

Right now I have no other reported issues in Sydney. It may be a specific issue for the Synology version. Can you report back please once you have the users data?

This also happens on a qnap, so not synology specific issue

Thank You.

Last time I looked at this i could see one url from Plex Media Server working ok but one for another channel was not working. I would need to know what the expected url syntax is for the ones that were not working

I will have a look at the diagnostics I had previously from the user @Rhubarb_home - but I do need to know what the expected url’s are

@llo36

I checked the logs we had and the following are two urls we used - one worked and one did not

fails
http://192.168.0.146:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/7%20Sydney

works ok
http://192.168.0.146:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/ABC%20TV

Pretty sure I have this issue and using Plex in raspberry pi

  1. Further to earlier discussion on another thread, I first I attempted to establish connectivity between the Plex Webb app (v4.86.1) with the VBox XTi 3442 before I get Plex debug server logs relating to the use of the VBox XTi 3442 device.
Contrary to my previous post (June 13), this time I had some success initially with the Plex Webb app, which replicated My Plex Media Server with regard to being able to tune the low numbered Sydney channels. However once the Plex Webb app failed to play one of the channels that my Plex Media Server also failed to play, the Plex Webb app then failed to play any further channels at all, including those that had previously played from the low numberd Sydney channels.
  2. I then confirmed that Enable Plex Media Server debug logging in General settings is still turned on and reset my VBox_XTi 3442 device which is connected via my wired network on ip: 192.168.0.115 (previously 192.168.0.146). Time: 7:30PM, today, 25 July, 2022.
I then selected to go through the Quick Setup Wizard of the VBox XTi 3442; but modifing the network settings to retain static ip of 192.168.0.115 to prevent DHCP reallocation of the device network address. Also “Enabled Plex” under Streaming > IPTV to enable PMS to find the VBox XTi 3442 device and refreshed Program Guide
7:50PM -Within Plex Media Server app (v1.27.2.5929-7000) and still in Settings, I went to Manage Live TV & DVR and selected to Setup Plex DVR; allowing Plex to download TV Guide data. 8:07PM-Following completion of refreshing guide data; I then Selected Home; then Live TV & DVR
  • Selected Guide; and in there selected to play channel 2 (ABC TV); the channel that tunes correctly - it displayed correctly;
8:08PM- I then selected to play channel 7 (that channel will not play) and got the usual error message “Playback Error
Could not tune channel. Please check your tuner or antenna.”
8:09PM -selected channel 003SBS - it played correctly.

Thank you for the tests and logs

They show
Jul 25, 2022 20:07:55 ABC%20TV successful
Jul 25, 2022 20:09:12 7%20Sydney failing
Jul 25, 2022 20:09:35 SBS%20ONE successful

@llo36 The logs I have show that we had these urls used by our trancoder process to capture the channel streams

http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/ABC%20TV

http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/7%20Sydney

http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/SBS%20ONE

These two worked ok

http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/ABC%20TV
http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/SBS%20ONE

but this one failed

http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/7%20Sydney

I would need vbox to look into this and tell me what we did wrong - the url is the same for all 3 except for the channel identifier

Rubarb_home - Can you be more specific about which Channel 7? There are a few in the url list I posted in the second reply above, can you pin point the url, or channel?

Can you also provide the VBox log from the same time code? You don’t need to reconfigure, just run a playback and then save the logs from both plex and the VBox so I can compare the url requests.

Ok , I can immediately see that the pulled url http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/7%20Sydney is different to the actual reported one off http://192.168.0.146:55555/7%20Sydney_1 that works in VLC. - Note to readers the ip has changed but that’s not important as that’s after the reset by the user to a new IP. It’s the channel number end that’s important. The /xxxx/media/ is also a plex call, again not important to the channel error as this is the plex call url.

Somewhere the channel urls are not the same, this is either an XML issue having the wrong data, or the user has connected the wrong channel to the wrong epg/xml channel in the config. This is where we should start diagnosis.

User, can you check your channel matching to make sure the correct channel is matched with the correct epg data?

NZ example below

Then we should verify if the stream url is correct.

The /devices/vbox-4952/media bit is present in all 3 urls - the 2 that work and the one that does not - i presume that url endpoint originated from the vbox -not sure at this point how we got that

That’s why I think the epg matching is out. But can you confirm that plex pulls the stream url from the epg, or if this is hard coded, and the epg is simply channel data? I suspect its from the EPG which means that if the mapping is wrong it will provide a wrong url.

Example, 7%20Sydney_1 matched with 7%20Sydney instead of 7%20Sydney matched with 7%20Sydney

The xml is pulled from Plex directly, not the VBox. Which is why I suspect this.

The xmltv file appears just having the lcn which I presume gets linked to the vbox channel numbers

This was the last xmltv file i had

sydney.zip (919.8 KB)

I think vbox tech support should be asked if the endpoint /devices/vbox-4952/media/ is what they provide to Plex Media Server as an endpoint to use. Anyway - it is working fine for these two

http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/ABC%20TV
http://192.168.0.115:55555/devices/vbox-4952/media/SBS%20ONE

Yes the /devices/vbox-4952/media/ is provided as this is the synced stream. But it’s not the important bit as that works for the working channels. Where its erroring is the channel itself, example 7%20Sydney_1 (the underscore 1 is the issue) as the url being called by Plex does not have _1. So where did Plex get it?

The only reference in the xml appears to be 7HD Sydney with nothing in there for 7 Sydney or 7 Sydney_1 so where is that coming from?

Plex Media Server.log (2.9 MB)

This is the relevant log. I can see the plex call to 7%20Sydney and the error. It shows the stream is calling the url and requesting playback from the VBox correctly. But it also shows that the channel name data is pulled from the epg guide then errors. because the information called in the the guide has the wrong channel url. I would still like the user to confirm the mapping and see if that resolves it before we go further.

User, please check the mapping and make sure that the channel 7 Sydney is not 7 Sydney backup channel. Make sure if there are multiple 7 Sydney options you test each one to the epg mapping. You do this by changing the available channel on the VBox under Streaming → Channels, and changing the check mark to each 7 Sydney option, test and repeat until you have got it working, or exhausted all options. Remember to refresh (rescan) the channels in plex under your channel matching as per the plex channel mapping image above, each time you change a check mark on the VBox.

Don’t do any other channels, just this one and report back. If you don’t have any other options please advise and provide a VBox screenshot of the channels in streaming → channels.

Sorry, this is all “double Dutch” to me!
I’m not sure what you mean. My VBox channel listings are shown below:

When selecting to play the Channel 7 TV station within the Plex Media Server app on my Synology DS(equiv.), I selected the first Channel 7 entry from the Live TV Guide data presented by the PMS; that’s channel 007 in the screen capturebelow:

The whole of the channel listing from my Plex Media Server (including Radio channels for Sydney region) are shown below.
In fact the three channels selected for playing, that I refer to above, were Channels 002 (ABC TV); 007 Ch.7; and finally, 003 SBS, in that order.
The way that PMS is interpretting/mapping the data from my VBox_4952 (where 4952 refers to the last four digits of the devices Serial number/MAC Address: that’s done by the PMS, presumably as programmed by Plex and out of my area of control.

I could be wrong here but how I understood it is when setting up the dvr can you match the channels with another version of themselves

When selecting for channel 7 is there other channel 7s

I actually very quickly tried this last night but didn’t find any extra other than 71 I think but didn’t work
But there are no others for any of the other channels that don’t work

Hi Rhubarb. I see the issue for your problem. You have multiple 7 Sydney channels and 7 HD sydney enabled. Please choose 7 Sydney (LCN 7) and disable all other 7 Sydney channels by unchecking them. Rescan in plex, and try to stream the 7 Sydney channel.

List of LCN to disable:
70
71

What is happening is that the stream is connecting to the wrong LCN on call. You can only have one channel for each channel name, if that makes sense to you. Its like trying to drive two exactly the same model, make and spec cars at the same time.

Please advise if this resolves it. If it does, then we need to check all other problem channels because it will likely be the same issue.

Yes, to a point, but for now I want to prove the problem on Rhubarbs, then we can look more in depth at yours. Remember, when trying this to refresh your plex channel matching. You can also try checking your EPG matching as sometimes the EPG in Plex has more options and needs to be .associated.
