OK Plexperts, here is a puzzle for you. Hopefully, one or more of you can lend me a hand with a solution (if one even exists!).
I have three separate Western Digital (WD) NAS/Media Servers each running Plex Version 4.20.2
For Remote Access to work at all, I “must” disable Secure Connections entirely. Once I do, and this may be functionally obvious, I can access these three servers anywhere from any device; and at any time. The only problem, is that I cannot access these servers “remotely” to edit media contents. I must do all of my editing when at home and on my own network .
The only thing I can think of is that the WD NAS Servers do not support Secure Connections at all. I tried changing many different settings; tried Port Forwarding with Secure Connections set to “Preferred” (as instructed by Plex), but still, Remote Access and Secure Connections won’t stay active for more than about 10 minutes. Again, only when Secure Connections are disabled can I enjoy Remote Access to my Plex Media Servers.
Any ideas on what may be causing this, and how I can fix the Secure Connections on my Servers? Or, am I correct in assuming the WD My Cloud Home devices are incompatible with Plex’s Secure Connection functionality? I contacted WD, but of course they were not very helpful.
There is a known issue between older versions of Plex Media Server (1.18.x, 1.19.x, etc) and the current Android & Android TV apps.
Updating to a current Plex Media Server release fixes the problem.
If you cannot update PMS, the workaround is to disable secure communications.
You can verify you are experiencing the same problem by looking for certificate errors in the Android / Android TV app log file. Look for lines containing: [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0xc597c7e0] Peer certificate failed verification
There is no additional information at this time regarding a fix for the problem.
FordGuy61, many thanks for the information. I was unaware of the incompatibility. I’ll try to update the WD PMS Server versions and try again. If the update doesn’t work, no big deal, Plex works very well with Secure Connections disabled. The only downside is that I have to access the WD PM Servers in-network, and not remotely, to make media updates. If there is no work around, then I can live with that for now as well. Much appreciated!
