I think that it would greatly enhance the extras capability if you could add a URL as an extra. Not as a source of extra material; but as the extra material itself. This extra type is suitable for any of the media types supported: Movies, music, TV shows, what have you. I think it would be best if the links could be categorized. Some possible categories could be:

  1. Official Album Page (or Artist Page, or Movie page, etc.). Many media products have a web page dedicated to them from the owner/producer/distributor of the material.
  2. Store page. A place to go buy it. Many databases already have this link; and it could be added to a Stub entry - a Media entry with no content. Someone might want to add an album in a wish list and have a link to the store on where to buy it.
  3. Fan site.
  4. Related material. A general category for things like books that are related to the item.
  5. Metadata site page. The page on some metadata site for the media item.
  6. Other. It’s always good to have the catchall “Other” category.

These links could be automatically added by scrapers or other metadata providers, or manually by the manager of a plex server.

Yes! My use case is that I want to provide an accompanying blog to family photos and videos in the timeline.
If I could add a URL to the domain of my blog and have Plex have an extra field
that links to the blog (concatenated with the ISO date or something), I could have an endpoint on the blog pull up the post for that date on the timeline to better describe the event. (I don’t want to annotate every photo’s summary.)

I’d actually prefer to go the other way, to link from the blog
directly to all Plex content on a given day.
The Plex experience centers around the media and is awesome.
But, for home photos and videos, the experience should center around the event (the story),
with an article, photos, videos, maps, timeline, links to more info
about people involved and other events, etc. – a blog.
However, from all the unanswered requests for direct URL links to Plex media,
maybe going the other way like this feature suggests would at least offer a similar experience but in a more secure way that doesn’t publicly reveal anything about the Plex content or server.

Plus, I think OP’s use case is awesome, too, for popular media.

Il you add a web link in the album review in Plex Media Server, this link is clickable in Plex app (at least on Ios). But in Plexamp app, this link is present, but NOT clickable !
What a pity !
