Why am I not authorized to log into my server or server not found?

I am running plex on a QNAP TVS-871 NAS. It has been working fine for about a year and a half. I was doing some cleanup on my system. There were several extra devices in the “Settings->Devices” list. I decided to delete some of the old ones. I accidentally deleted the server like is talked about on the https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/115007577087#RemovingADevice page. I tried re-adding the server as discussed on the same web page by re-signing into my Plex account. The device wasn’t re-registered and doesn’t appear again in the devices list. As a matter of fact the “Server” menu doesn’t show up on the “Devices” page any more.

When starting Plex on my computer, I get the message “Looking for servers… Please wait while servers are discovered.” I’ve tried going through the debug items on the “Why can’t the Plex app find or connect to my Plex Media Server” web page, https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/204604227-Why-can-t-the-Plex-app-find-or-connect-to-my-Plex-Media-Server- . I have downloaded the latest version of Plex server for thq QNAP and installed it. When I log into the Plex web app, the server menu doesn’t show up. I’m not sure how to log into the server. I must be missing something on the Forum pages. Although when I open the Plex app on my Ipad the server shows up in the “Locations” of servers list. However it says the server is “Unauthorized”.

I’m not sure of the official way to confirm that the server is running, but when I look for the process when logged into the QNAP console, it looks like it is running. When I run “ps” I get this:
[~] # ps -Alf | grep -i plex

I have run out of ideas. Does anyone know what the issue might be?
Thanks,
Randy

A number of steps but a ‘warm start’ is the solution.

  1. Sign your browser out of your Plex account.
  2. Stop PMS
  3. Remove file "/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml"
  4. Start PMS
  5. Open the IP address of your machine http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web in the browser tab
  6. You’ll be greeted with the startup / setup / first run wizard
  7. Sign in to reclaim it.
  8. Don’t create any Library sections… Skip that
  9. Click through and get to the Dashboard
  10. Your Libraries are waiting for you
  11. Settings - Server - General
  12. Verify the machine is signed in to your Plex account.
  13. Verify / adjust your other as needed

I did each of these steps:

  • Sign your browser out of your Plex account.
  • Stop PMS
  • Remove file “/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/Plex
    Media Server/Preferences.xml”
  • Start PMS
  • Open the IP address of your machine http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web
    in the browser tab
  • You’ll be greeted with the startup / setup / first run wizard

However I was not greeted with the first run wizard. Plex just went to
the “Looking
for servers…", the same as it did without removing the “Preferences.xml”
file.

while at the shell , did you ps -ef | grep -i plex to see if it’s actually running?

The PMS seems to be running and stoping correcting at the correct time, but
I still am not able to get logged into the server. Do I need to completely
uninstall the Plex Server software?

Here’s the results from the greps after each step:

IP Address of QNAP, as well as workstation used are?

QNAP IP address: 42.242.24.82
Workstation IP address: 42.242.24.89

That will not work!

See pinned FAQ here named QNAP FAQ…READ ME FIRST!!! Q22

Yep. I was missing the step about changing the IP address to get Plex to know that it needed to run the setup:

Q22: Which IP Address should my QNAP have
Servers need fixed (or reserved) IP addresses. To avoid a clash with any other server on the internet, you MUST use what is known as Private Address Space. According to RFC 1918 these are:
10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255
You will not be able to perform initial parametrization if you use another IP range because PMS “thinks” that you are trying to access remotely, therefore disabling initial setup.

The fix proposed by ChuckPA worked for me. Thanks!
