Why did we lose grid view when browsing by folders?

It seems like now that we’ve been forced to adopt the new home screen layout, we’ve also been forced to give up previous browsing views. I mostly browse by library view and navigate using folders that I’ve set up to easily find things. But there’s now no way to change the view method when you switch to folders. Gone is the grid view, and the old list view. Can someone explain why two very useful browsing views were removed?

Because PLEX is being arrogant and short-sighted. They think they know what’s best for you (probably what’s easiest for their developers) and they are forcing you to play their way. Nothing worse than a company being so arrogant as to feel that the users are too stupid to use a product the way THEY envisioned it working, rather than how the users NEED it to work for their collections. If they don’t fix this soon, I’m looking for alternatives.

Is there any way to go back to the previous version of Plex-web? Before the grid view by folder was removed? Since the change, I’ve had absolutely no desire to even add any more movies because it’s such a pain in the rear. If there’s no way, then I too will be looking for alternatives. So sad after so many years of enjoyment with Plex, not to mention the countless hours that I have spent building my vast library and tweeking it every chance I got. Hard to put into words how I really feel about this without using some very foul language, which I won’t do.

I think grid view is still there if you use the bundled web app rather than the hosted version (at least for now)

Do we know if the removal is a bug or a feature?

Not sure I know what you mean by bundled web app and the hosted version. I have Plex on a dedicated server. I add movies and tweek my content on my main PC using Firefox and logging into Plex.
I still have grid view, but only if I sort by “movies” in which all 7000+ movies show up. No grid view when sorting by folder “A - Z”.

The bundled web app is what comes with the plex you installed on your dedicated server, so depends on how that is set up.

What happens if you open a browser and go to the ip address of your dedicated sever on port 32400 e.g.

dedicatedserveripaddress:32400

obviously change dedicatedserveripaddress to the real ip address of your dedicated server

Ok, that worked on my server. Got the grid view back by folder. Should I be able to do the same on my PC as well? No luck so far. Browser says it’s unable to connect.

Sadly, there’s no way to get to the bundled web player if you’re accessing remotely. Plus, I don’t think there’s a way to configure a specific player (hosted vs. bundled) through the Plex desktop app.

Man, I’ve spent countless hours sorting and organizing things based on folder structure. Literally, it’s probably several hundred hours of work getting things organized just right, just the way I want them. And now it’s all gone because we lost the previous view options.

I was hoping that since my PC and server are networked, and I usually run the server headless thru my PC, that I could also use the bundled web player on my PC browser. Hopefully that makes sense.

This option MUST be brought back
I can use the bundled web player but this is not good enough

Agreed. The bundled player is only an option if you’re on the same network. Right now, I’m visiting my parents in the SF Bay Area and my server is in my home office back in Portland, OR. So I can’t use the bundled player (at least, I haven’t found a way to do so).

Also, I’ve been trying to tag videos in collections using names based on the folder structure I painstakingly set up. It sort of works in that I can at least see the grid view again, but it’s a lot of extra work. And that doesn’t fix the loss of the list view where I can add/remove columns to help with navigation.

I’ve always felt like the Plex team was inexplicably hostile toward folder navigation, but I never thought they’d just take away functionality to further their streaming partnership agenda.

This has to be a bug. I got home from visiting my family last night (after being away for 3 weeks). When I woke my iMac, I noticed that folder view still lets me switch to grid and table (list) view in the desktop app (version 1.30.1.2115-81e1fc3f) and in Microsoft Edge (version 89.0.774.75) as both of those apps were left running when I left on my trip. Note that I’m using the Plex hosted version at app.plex.tv/desktop and not the bundled one. So something was left sticky in those live instances that allows me to switch back and forth as before.

But in Chrome (version 90.0.4430.93) and Firefox (version 88.0.1), I no longer have the option to switch views when navigating by folder. Both of these browsers were restarted to update to whatever the latest version is.

So it seems that, as long as I don’t quit Edge or Plex for Mac, I can still have the previous functionality. But if I have to restart the app, or reboot my computer, I might end up screwing myself.

I can’t imagine this is intended.

Hi all, fully agree with you regarding how much of a disruption this viewing change is. Going to the bundled app does resolve the issue locally, but it seems I am unable to bookmark it - I must type in the address and port every time.
