Plex web and Windows 10 app lose view controls in Folders view

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392
Player Version#: 1.31.0.2254-43df1e6e(local), 4.56.4 (web)

This issue appears in Plex web and Windows 10 client but not in local access or Android app. Library is always in “Movies” mode even if it was earler selected to “Folders” mode. Also when selecting the “Folders” mode, the controls to select view type disappear and the view reverts to summary view.

Thanks for the report!

This was an intentional change, and for now the folder view will be limed to a list-style view in the web app. We will re-evaluate at a later date to possibly add more view types for folder view.

I have the same complaint. PLEX was supposed to be the platform you could customize so it worked for you. Now Plex says F*You, it works the way we want it to work. I have my libraries sorted and organized and now you’ve completely destroyed it. This sucks. You need to re-evaluate this sooner than later. It’s horrible. If you make me redesign and redo my entire library I will be very very upset.

Can I unistall this POS and revert back to a the prior version?

No er Chris, this is the opposite of what I want. I don’t want media library, I don’t want posters, I don’t Plex to download anything really… You’ve removed every thing that allowed a view to look like Windows Explorer in Detail view.

Any one have the Synology installer for the previous version?

Removing existing features because you think it’s the wrong way to use your product seems feels like backwads approach to user value but I suppose it is what it is. As a video editor I use Plex not only for stuff that have rich metadata available and is best used in Movies/TV Series view but also for edited things like corporate films etc. and navigating those in Movies view make absolutely no sense.

So thanks for removing one more useful feature and making me one step closer in looking for laternatives.

Im not a video professional or one of your developers. I am a person with a huge video library (almost 1000 films) and have them organized using directories and folders so I can actually find what Im looking for. This asinine idea makes me either go through a bunch of multiple clicks to “temporarily” see the folders or try to plow through one big screen of amalgamated stuff to try to find the film I want. This was stupid. Did PLEX bother to ASK it’s user community if this is something they could remove? I want to re-install the previous version. This does nothing but waste my time and cause me grief.

Having the same problem in the Win10 DesktopApp FolderView!

Never heard a more stupid apology!
Customising views is essential!!!
Stop treating customers like a child and stop chasing them away! Obviously they know it better what they need than you!

Also. You say this affects web app. But from what I can tell it also affects Windows and Mac apps (which apparenly are just instances of the web app). So any way to roll this back on the native apps even if you’re committed on crippling the web app?

WOW! I am speechless. I just noticed this yesterday and I could not believe it as I read this thread that its an intentional change!

Please revert this Feature and let the User decide how he wants to use the view!!!

Pity, I quite liked having my music in Plex. This change has pushed me to delete my music libraries and revert to using a better player, with DNLA for distribution locally.

Please stop changing the ‘user experience’ arbitrarily. My requirement is for customisation, not an enforced UI. This is why people hate Microsoft. Don’t be Microsoft.

Thanks for confirming this. Do you have an idea of why this was removed (It also affects viewing all Tracks in a music library, not just Folders)?

This is really my only major complaint with Plex, especially since i bought the life time pass.

STOP CHANGING THE UI BECAUSE YOU FELL LIKE IT!!!

Plex has notable issues at the core yet more work and time has been spent on a UI that causes more frustration that use. Especially with regards to the mobile and TV apps. Your UI design team is ill-informed. ASK the community or at-least your pass members. Create surveys. Evaluate needs based on customer feedback. You are starting to feel like Microsoft with all their dumb Office 365 UI changes. Hopefully you take these complaints seriously as part of that evaluation.

I found this post after I sent my reply. It’s spot on…

It would seem Plex is now making more money from their “partnerships” with media distribution than us, so I suspect we can p!ss and moan all we want and it isn’t going to make a hill of beans.

Plex has spoken: We no longer matter so long as someone else is lining their pockets.

I’ve already begun looking at alternatives. I suppose I got my “lifetime” pass’ worth given how long ago I bought mine. Of course, I knew from Day 1 it was never going to be a lifelong love affair, but it’s unfortunate nonetheless to see them steer a full 180° from their original missives so staunchly. I suspect they’re just biding their time and building their perceived “value” until someone else comes along and buys them up…some holding co or some other vulture, no doubt. That is the way of the modern tech dodo.

Anything to offer us here @elan ? There are a lot of valid points here.

This new AWEFUL folder list view is complete garbage!!!

Nobody in my family liked it. They all ran to me and asked why Plex was broken when they saw this yesterday.

That 1990-style design looks worse than my old 2002 TV UI in the garage.

I don’t care about your smart collections or any other views - they don’t work for my video collection.
I want to organize media in my structure, which works for my family and me.

BRING GRID VIEW BACK!

Imagine your car mechanic will come and install square wheels on your car next time you service it - and explain to you, “we think you better off with this - it was an intentional decision”.

I paid $$$ just to find later that you will throw such garbage at me!

If you think that your insanely unfriendly “list view” is so great - keep it as default for new users, but why take away the view that a lot of people use and love!!!

With such an attitude from Plex, it looks like it is time to look for a different media player… SAD

This intentional change is at least a blunder, it lengthens the navigation and is not user-friendly.
I want to find my films the way I have classified them, and not have to think about whether a bench of experts has decided that a film is more about action or adventure or sci-fi.
What is the point of paying for a lifetime subscription if the quality of service drops ?
Bring back the grid view !

Edit : And I just had the experience, it is even worse for my home and work videos which are not database sorted. Shame on you !

While not a solution I will offer a potential workaround. Plex themselves have decided not to update the PMP for a long time which means it contains embedded web version 4.29.2 which pre dates any of the new wonderful stuff !

If you are using a pc you can ditch the current web ux and app and use this older PMP version. Yes it does not contain all the new ux stuff from plex but I’ll offer it as an alternative.
