Hi,
I’ve been running a Plex setup for some years now and all of a sudden all my movies match to Madagascar 3. Its not a naming problem, as you can see in the attached

I’m running PlexMediaServer_1.3.3.3148-b38628e_x86_64 on a QNAP with firmware 4.3.2.
I’ve already tried using SQlite3 to export / re-import the database but its not made a difference. Help!
I read in a couple of other posts that this problem comes up when using Handbrake and converting the movie inside a folder that Plex uses in it’s library, and you have auto-update enabled for your libraries. Can’t seem to find the lnks now, but maybe you’ll have better luck.
Anyways, it seems that Plex finds that incomplete file being converted and matches it (I don’t know why it’s always Madagascar 3) and that sticks to that name even after the file is completely converted. The solution was to have Handbrake encode the file into a folder that Plex can’t see, and move it after it has completed.
Hey thanks for the tip. You accurately describe my general practice when adding new content - transcode using handbrake into the folder that Plex is monitoring. I can also try turning off auto updating if you think that would help. But this used to work fine - its only recently got broken.
Note that the screenshot above is from a file added some months ago, and not from a partially converted Handbrake rip. As you can see the “Fix Incorrect Match” functionality is proposing Madagascar 3 as the top hit, so it seems to me that there’s something a bit broken somewhere.
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
and
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase
in both places, drag the ‘Local Media Assets’ agent downwards, so it sits at the lower end of the list.
Then Plex Dance both “Madagascar 3” and “Deja Vu”.
@javerre - I don’t use handbrake so I know very little about it. I’m gonna GUESS it adds Madagascar 3 as a default title tag while it’s encoding for some reason. I’m pretty sure there must be a setting someplace to just change the folder Handbrake encodes to rather than disable auto-update, but either should work. I don’t think it’s a new problem either, you may have just been lucky. Plex is actually doing what it’s supposed to, monitor the library, and just isn’t aware that the file isn’t complete yet.
@OttoKerner - Thanks, that’s done the trick. I’ve been messing about with SubZero subtitles which stores the srt in the local folder, and so had dragged “local media assets” to the top of the list. Hence the change in behaviour. By the way, I don’t own Madagascar 3 - must be some weirdness in the “Local Media Assets” agent that causes this behaviour.
Anyway, all good now! Thanks a million.
It is not a weirdness. mp4 files support embedded meta tags. When the LMA agent is at the top, Plex will read the embedded ‘Title’ tag and will use this instead of the file name to match the movie.
Handbrake embeds useless content into the Title tag, so it is little wonder that Plex gets confused.
