Why do the developers hate "Other video" users?

YES! I think the Plex developers HATE us “Other Videos” users!
I will not get into why I prefer to sort my own videos my own way… HECK! I may have a folder called “characters wearing green shirts” and I could have 100 items in there sorted the way I WANT THEM SORTED. But I digress… here are 3 issues I’m having:

  1. Lets say I have a 4k video called “Casablanca” in a folder called “Classics” in “Other Videos” in mkv format. Now lets say I have another folder called “Mayberry” and in that folder I have another folder called “Season 1”. When I copy a new file to the “Season 1” folder, why the HELL would “Casablanca” merge a new version???
    –Different video formats
    –Different file locations
    –Different resolutions
    –Different file sizes
    – I could go on…

  2. Now for number 2. Why the hell are there no “breadcrumbs” in the folder view?
If I have the folder view selected, and I’m in “Mayberry”/“Season 1”/BadAssBarney", and I watch 1 video… I CANNOT NAVIGATE BACK ONE FOLDER, I MUST START MY NAVIGATION OVER???

  3. Why the hell is there no “thumnail” view of folders in the browser anymore? If I have folderview selected … and I have over 200 folders in the root… i’m scrolling a long efing TIME! PUT BACK THE tile view of folders in the browser!!

and my rant has concluded! thank you for reading!!

Other Videos is designed for Odd-Ball Items, or Home Movies that have no hope of a database match.

It’s not designed for your entire library you can’t be bothered to name and structure correctly.

This will get you started:

soon after that it’ll be over.

Let me explain WHY I went to “OtherVideos”. When I first started using Plex, about 5 or 6 years ago, some of my legit rips for Strawberry Shortcake DVD’s got assigned a PORN thumbnails…even TRAILERS!!! I was just teaching my daughters how to use Plex on their tablets. You can only imagine my SHOCK to see Plex assigned a PORN image to my rip. Luckily I caught it before my kids saw that! This happened on multiple occasions. So I said NEVER, EVER again. If you are telling me there is no way to turn off any db matching… Then I must leave Plex.

Were you using an official Plex agent? I don’t know if any “porn” content that we would match to.

With your “other video” library what scanner did you pick. If you pick “movie” it will still try to match and merge if they are found to match. f you use “video file”, there should be any matching or merging.

Your problem all along may have been:
poor media preparation
using MP4/M4V files with Bogus Title Fields (preventing a match or causing a mismatch)
or any number of other reasons proper matching isn’t happening most of the time.

I have over 6000 movies in the ‘verse’ and I might have had to Fix Match 4 or 5 times. Same with the 600+ TV Shows (I’d go with a dozen or so) and here’s what happens when I test Strawberry Shortcake:

… an instant, natural match

Having learned you’re ripping DVDs - the cryptic, nonsense Disc Manufacturer’s put in the Title Field of every disc ever made is reproduced every step you take - unless one of the steps is removing that nonsense, so Plex won’t make your life miserable when it peers inside MP4/M4V files and prefers that Title Field over a perfect file name (if you have any).

Are you using MP4/M4V files?
MKV files are immune to that - Plex can’t read what’s in them.

Anywho - show me the same screen I just showed you above.
Pull up an episode, Get Info, Alt/Printscreen and paste to the message.
You can edit in MS Paint if you want to make it pretty, but don’t edit out the file path or file name.

OK, I have now unselected “Local Media Assets (Movies)”

That’s not what I was referring to. I meant the agent listed when you edit the library. That’s what is used to try or not try to identify movies.

Assuming this?

Ok, with those settings, Plex should not try to match the files to anything so it shouldn’t be merging them either. If it does, let me know, that would be a bug.

It did it again, I copied Alone to my drive and plex picked it up as a new version of AquaMan!

Get me the entire PMS log package.

where can I post it to? I dont want to post it here publicly.

You can PM it to me. Click on my username then select message. Attach the zip file to your comment.

Got the logs and I see something. Can you provide me the xml info for that video?

Got the xml. It’s as I thought.

guid=“com.plexapp.agents.none://?lang=xn”

Your video has this as it’s identifier. Which is wrong. There should be something after those 2 slashes. Something is wrong so that the identifier is not being created properly. So your server is not actually merging the 2 videos, it’s creating the same messed up identifier which coincidentally causes them to be treated as merged videos.

It’s something specific with those 2 files causing the bad identifier.

You can try a Plex Dance on those 2 files to see if it will fix the identifier. I have a guess as to why this is happening and will bring it up with the team.

THANK YOU for your assistance! I can tell you that the “Aquaman” file seems to grab new versions if the files I add to the folder that begin with “A”. I added some spongebob clips and Aquaman didnt grab those.

Unfortunately, the Plex Dance made no difference.

Sent ya the XMLs after splitting.

Now it happens when I add ANY file to my library :’(

Any idea whats causing:
guid=“com.plexapp.agents.none://?lang=xn”

PMS needs to scan you file then generates a unique ID based on that. Somehow it’s not able to scan your file properly resulting in that. The only time I’ve seen this is a bad drive. Do those files play properly all the way through?

after I split them apart, the files play flawlessly.
