I wouldn't call it unnecessary, for many of us it's an important feature in order to prevent image retention.
It's taking a while for the updates to come through so it's already kind of annoying that I'll be at least a few weeks without it if it's removed altogether :/ Just hope it gets added back in.

I have a plasma and as long as you burn the screen in properly, I have had no issues with image retention, even when finding the TV left on a static screen after the wife had been using it.
I just think its unnessary in an app when the hardware already does this, at the least it should be optional.
And to mike the smartass (because there is always one), my post was being typed out while that previous post was made.
Yeah that makes sense, it would be fine if the system screensaver was a little better and had these options.. The system screensaver takes around 10 minutes to come on and doesn't dim the screen very much unfortunately, and I can't find any options to control it :(
On the Xbox feedback forums there is a thread here and here which could use some votes!
Plasmas seem to vary a bit, a lot of people say Panasonic plasmas have no burn in issues. I ran colour patterns etc for some time right after I got my LG plasma but it didn't make much difference.
I know plasma is 'old tech' but the reason I got it was because a lot of home theatre enthusiasts still say that plasma picture quality is unmatched. I have to say it is brilliant but I kinda wish I had known more about these issues at the time.
I've had the dimming issue and I've found that if at any time I pause the movie either with the controller or through kinect then dimming would start after restarting and I would have to periodically wiggle the controller. If I do not pause at anytime during playback then I can watch the movie without dimming.
