Android app crashes or gives error when trying to play synced music: "An error occurred while playing this item"

Plex 4 XL with player version 8.5.2.20133 – same issue

The issue has been identified and will be fixed in the upcoming release of the app (8.6).

Thanks to everyone that’s reported this problem and apologies for the inconvenience.

…and when will that be? Everytime I update this app more features stop working. This is not how you retain customers.

Just wanted to add that I’m having the opposite problem - I can’t stream anything but everything that’s synced in fine. I wonder if that stems from the same issue because I’m getting the exact same error message as the op.

The 8.6 update did not fix the issue.

I am having the same issue. Nothing I sync will play. This is getting very frustrating. Plex Amp is fine but it doesn’t work with Android Auto. I don’t enjoy paying for mobile data use when I don’t have to. Please fix this.

Problem seems fixed for me with build 8.6.0.20351 on a Pixel 4.

@BIGGRIMTIM, there is an Android Auto app for Plexamp (v3.1.1) that works for me as well. I’m not a big fan of Plexamp though because it seems to be missing the shuffle and sleep features that the main Plex app has (or I just haven’t found those features in the UI yet)

I agree. Mine is also working now too.

I did start from a clean slate, I wiped the cache and all storage for the app.

Where do you get 8.6?

Version 8.6 finally available in play store.
Did not make any difference on Samsung S20+.
Deleted, uninstalled and restarted, all the classics, no difference to error while playing and crash for synced music.
Samsung S7+ works fine including using version 8.5.

This seems to have solved my problem on a Pixel 2. Thanks to the Plex team for jumping in on this.

Just totally reinstalled the program on my mobile after wiping cash and settings. The update did not make a difference. It still does not work and gives me the error. Interestingly, seeing the comments above, abewsher had the same outcome on a samsung S20+. My device is a samsung Note 20 ultra, similar gear…

Seems to work on my s9 now.

While 8.6 on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ no longer gets the error. I still believe that it is not working as intended.

Any music that I’ve sync’d still plays from the server not from the sync’d copy (unless I navigate to the Downloads & Sync section). The app does not seem to honor the “Prefer synced content” setting for music when played from outside of Downloads & Sync. Video does honor the prefer synced content setting and will always play the synced content whether or not I’m connected but that is not the case for music.

For those of you who responded that it is now working for you, can you see where it is playing the music from under “Playback Info”/Source?

Edit: @ManuelPG Seems strange to be burning data pulling music from the server when there is a local copy of it available.

Your observations are correct. Streaming from server and not from device.

Good catch. My device no longer throws an error, but it is not respecting the prefer synced content and only plays the synced content if I play from inside the Downloads & Sync section.

Not working for me either. Have 1) deleted all data and synced again 2) deleted the app, restarted phone and reinstalled app, let it sync old stuff but new synced songs won’t . Podcasts, which I also had issues with manually added content, now seems to be working tho.

Sorry, what has supposed to have been fixed here? New version installed with the exact same results. When downloading music from my Plex server, it appears to skip the conversion and instead create unplayable files. To add to that, after installing, it removed all of the track titles for my existing syncs. It’s just an absolute mess now.

Not sure if it linked to the same problem. But when I started having this issue, I also had issues with my Home screen failing to load when I manually choose what to show on it. Anyone else notice the same?

Greetings,
Im also having an issue on OnePlus 6T
I am streaming mp3 files and the neither Plex or Plexamp can play them
However, mp4 files renamed to .mp3 do work ( Not sure how all this works, but im guessing it has to do with converting them to MKV )

And storing mp4 files is just a waste of space when you are only streaming audio

Please fix this, did not pay a yearly subscription just so i cant use it!
