Cellular data is limited even if it's not selected - Know Bug in iOS

Hello,

I’m using Plex App on my iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 16.2, and I noticed that I can’t select any quality above 480p when connected via cellular.

When I’m connected to any wifi (same as server or remotely), I can select any quality I want.

I double-checked my app setting, to make sure I have “Limit Cellular Data” off and “Remote Streaming” set to maximum (I can watch content in original quality in cellular).

After going through all options in settings, I can safely say that is a bug in Plex App. It seems like the option “Limit cellular data” isn’t turning it off even after turning it on and off again. And I’m positive that the issue is not within my server because I can easily watch content above 480p remotely on a TV and web app. Hopefully devs can find the problem and fix it.

P.S.: After searching a little bit more, I found this thread, this thread and this thread (reported by ericswpark) in Plex forum, that reports the same exact issue back in 2019. Apparently, it wasn’t fixed or updated since then.

I’ve had the same problem for a couple of years. Bug reported but no official answers. The issue has even followed me when changing iPhone and cellular provider. I’m tempted to completely wipe my phone but It’s a lot of work for something that only might work. Also, this hasn’t happened to my other users, only on my iPhone.

Definitely a known bug, I have the same issue. If Plex is working on a solution they haven’t said anything. I’m not super hopeful, it’s seemingly been around a while and has gotten no response of substance.

Hey @r4f4w , this is a known bug that I reported back in July last year: iOS Plex app won't give transcode options above 480p

If you see the thread I linked a Plex employee acknowledged the bug and said they filed it in their bug report system, but since then they don’t have any updates.

I also looked at your linked threads and it’s honestly quite bad how the Plex team let a bug like this sit since 2019. And since the linked threads are locked I guess nobody came back to them?

Anyway please attach a comment to the thread above so hopefully it gains a bit more traction so that the devs assign a higher priority to it. Thanks!

Hey @ericswpark ! Thanks for contributing! I’ve add your thread to my original comment! Hopefully the Plex Team will start to take this in account. I think they’ve probably had added this bug to fix list, but didn’t get to actually work on it since others more important bugs came across, and there wasn’t a lot of people complaining about this.
