I am at a loss on what to do. I’m seconds away from returning this brand new piece of junk. I need help.
I am an IT Manager and I use Synology NAS units professionally and they work great, so for my home NAS i decided to upgrade my old Netgear readynas to a new DS920+. What a big mistake… I installed the Plex Media Server package from the Package Center. Once its done installing, I run and open it locally at (Local IP):32400/web. I log into my Plex account which I used on my ReadyNAS and when I do it asks me to choose a preferred server. I do not want to choose one of my friends servers, I want to create a new server with the media on this NAS. I do not get prompted to setup a new server.
I have read through all the forum posts and even opened a support ticket with Synology. Synology told me its not their issue and a issue with Plex. And the forum posts and the lovely walkthroughs and setup guides I have read here have been very detailed but not at all whats happening here.
I have tried uninstalling PMS and reinstalling, no success. I have made sure the Plex user has proper admin permissions, and made sure the Plex share has the correct permissions from the forum posts. I have even tried factory resetting the NAS with no success. Same result. I have attached the Log files and could really use some help before I return this expensive paperweight.
Also side note… I cant believe this Synology 920+ doesn’t have utorrent, or at least some kind of torrent app that allows VPN or Socks connection. Real bummer. seriously considering just keeping my old ReadyNAS. How sad.
Please read these two documents. They will save you much time and trouble. There are several places where a Plex installation can go wrong. The documents will help you avoid them.
You should also be aware there is a problem with Intel’s linux driver for J4XXX CPUs. Because of the buggy driver, the system will not transcode video properly. You should configure your system to use the older driver. After installing Plex, see FAQ #26 for details on bypassing the buggy driver.
I also just acquired a new Synology 920+ and I am super happy with it. My old Buffalo Terrastation died - the firmware became corrupt, but after 14 years, I don’t need to try and fix it.
I’ve been running Plex for years on an Ubuntu server, but I thought I would try installing it on the Synology. So far it has performed flawlessly. I have my library from the Ubuntu server remote mounted on the NAS along with a local media share, so both Plex servers see the same library.
@FordGuy61 - Thanks for the tip regarding the Intel driver.
