DSM7 Broke Plex

Server Version#: Synology 1513+ wtih DSM7
Player Version#: N?A

So I stupidly updated my Synology 1513+ t DSM7 and no matter what I do, I can’t get Plex working. Says not authorized and no way to re-ad the library sources either

Here is what I have done so far

  • Completely uninstalled and erased the Server package

  • Installed the newest one from Plex

  • Moved my media files to a different folder and deleted the old ones and did the above all over again

Instructions say to get at oken but without server access that is not possible. Also you would think doing all the above the setup wizard would come on and I can add my sources all over again but no. Always says NOT AUTHORIZED, which makes me wonder why isn’t like starting over with all those steps I have done?

I am at my wits end

Which instructions did you follow?
Here’s an official guide…

I did that except on Synology, no place to enter the location for the server install so it goes into the shared folder

Should I copy my media to that folder it autocreated?

Sorry… I don’t understand what you mean with that statement.

Never place any of your media in the share containing your server’s data directory.

This error happens because Plex.tv still thinks there is a DSM 6 installation.

When you DELETE (uninstall & erase) without also deleting it from Plex.tv, plex.tv gets hung up looking for that DSM 6 installation at that IP address.

The answer here is:

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 Plex app

  2. Reinstall the same SPK – EXCEPT
    – Choose the “New or Lost servers” button
    – Click “Get Plex Claim Token” link
    – COPY the claim token from the browser tab which opens
    – Return to the installer tab and PASTE the claim token into the box
    – Click NEXT - NEXT - DONE

  3. It will take a bit longer to install (it’s getting and installing new credentials)

  4. When complete
    – It will tell you if the installation itself succeeded (normally this is the case)
    – It will also confirm ownership and show your Plex Username and Email address.

The full procedure is here (with screenshots)

  1. After the server is claimed (added to your account again), Plex.tv will automatically update and it will no longer get confused / looking for DSM 6

Once claimed and you have control,

  1. Give the new username “PlexMediaServer” (“Plex” isn’t used anymore in DSM7)
  2. Start adding your media

EDIT:

I see there were 8 abandoned servers on Plex.tv from 4+ years ago
(Not connected to Plex in that time or longer)

I removed them for you to clean things up

Ok so thanks to your help I got it working but a weird thing has happened. On the web and my Fire Cube, it’s fine but on my Roku TV it doesn’t work even after I sign out and in again. is there some way to make sure my connection is good? Why just that app?

What si the best wy to ensure smooth connection, i.e. settings or firewall?

@krbmedia

Try uninstalling the TV app and restart the TV (not the quick off/on but the full off/on)
Then install the TV app again and link it.

Weirdest thing is it finally started working. Is there a connection list to make sure I have settings correctly? Especially for the Synology NAS?

@krbmedia

The only things you need are:

  1. DSM firewall ports open to the LAN
  2. PMS published to Plex.tv (signed in + remote access on 1 time)

Can you be more specific on each? Newbie here.

In the DSM firewall (Control Panel - Security)

If you have the firewall enabled (most of us disable it because our modem/router NAT provides the protection we need), then these ports need to be open.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/201543147-what-network-ports-do-i-need-to-allow-through-my-firewall/

For Publish – Enable Remote Access. If port forwarding (UPNP) configures and comes up for you, you’ll be all set.

Then restart the TV/player apps and you’ll find the server listed.

Seems like it is already. See image below and I can connect, just not sure if it is optimal or not and should I change anything

@krbmedia

In looking at your DiskStation’s reported IP, you’re using the wrong LAN subnet range.

LOCAL ADDRESSES 188.10.10.80

This is an Italy IP address

I see where you have server IP addresses in Pennsylvania and Florida so will presume, unless you tell me otherwise, you’re in the USA.

This having bees said, What is the LAN configuration?
Are you using 188.x.x.x as your LAN subnet ?

That is my local IP address. I probably should delete that pic now :slight_smile:

@krbmedia

Good to delete the pic.

are you using 188.x.x.x as your local LAN?

This is where I’m at in figuring this out with you

Yeah don’t know what I was thinking putting that there with the IP showing like that.

And yes that is the local lan range.

Like I said it’s working but i want or make sure very thing is set up to optimal settings.
