How I got there:
The disks an SynoB had been replaced by bigger ones over the years resulting into a one SHR-1 volume with lots of slices.
So I decided to delete and recreate the volume and take this opportunity to update to DSM 7.
Before doing so, I carefully read DSM 7 - Plex Media Server - Release Info & Migration instructions and uninstalled PlexB (just to be sure).
After recreating the volume and upgrading to DSM 7, I deleted the remaining user “plex” and restored my movies from the backup NAS SynoC.
Then I downloaded PMS from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads using “Synology (DSM 7)” / “Intel 64-bit” (it is a DS1821+ with a Ryzen) and installed it manually via Package Center.
According to the advice “Ask if you have any questions BEFORE you start guessing or trying something” I would kindly ask for help now.
Uninstall the DSM 7 package with ERASE (since there is no data in it)
Install the package again using the Plex Claim Token option
– click Get Plex Claim token to get the token
– paste it into the installer window
– Let it install and claim the server for you.
Now use an incognito window, opened to Syno B:32400/web and finish the setup
I started with option#1, but in Authorized Devices / Server only PlexA was listed.
So I moved on to option#2.
After erasing Plex the shared folder “PlexMediaServer” was still there, so I removed it (hope that was ok).
Installation with reclaiming said “PlexMedia successfully claimed by pRabbit” and now the I see a second server in Authorized Devices, correctly detected as running on DS1821+ with DSM 7.
Its name is “PlexMediaServer”, not PlexB, just to mention that.
Unfortunately that’s the only progress, I still don’t have a “PlexMediaServer” user in DSM.
I assume that’s the reason why this server is not listed in the drop down box of the sidebar of the Settings
Although I have been working with many Synology NAS models for years, I was not yet familiar with the concept of System Internal Users and therefore misinterpreted the note in the manual, sorry for that!
And yes, I did overread “4. Change the dropdown menu from Local Users to System Internal User” in the message at the end of the installation several times … shame on me.
I have now granted PlexMediaServer RW access to my media share and all subfolders and checked this in File Station.
After some minutes, I opened a second tab and did the same.
Now the “Customize your media” dialog appeared and after clicking “Finish Setup”. I was redirected to the Plex Web Home screen.
The settings sidebar still had only PlexA listed.
When I repeated this in a third tab, I immediately got “Not Authorized”.
The solution was to open another icognito window, entering the same URL and now I came to the Server Setup - Heureka!
I could reproduce this behaviour 2 times, always starting with an erased Plex App.
I used Firefox 97.0.1. (latest version) with Windows 10 Pro 21H2 English-US
Personally, IMHO, something is happening with FireFox. I can barely use it now for anything.
Had I known you’re using it, i’d have suggested edge or even chrome to get you over the hump.
DSM 7 changed ALL the rules. Plex->PlexMediaServer was required. With that mandated change, and a complete rewrite of the installer to work in their rewritten installer mechanism, it made sense to make all the names the same.
That’s why Plex share → PlexMediaServer share and Plex (user) → PlexMediaServer( System Internal User as mandated in the API )
We no longer have any privileges on the box. Synology creates and manages everything.
it’s very heavy-handed imho but it’s their box so I do what I’m told
Normally I’m using Chrome, so maybe it was the wrong time to give Firefox a try
I’m a developer for Hydro Power Plant systems, so I know what you are talking about.
