DVR | General Feedback & Issues

Recording meant to have started just before 8PM. Transcoder error apparently. You can load 103 fine through Plex, gives option to watch from start or live. Either option allows the recording to start. After exiting after 10 secs error returns for recording on Plex Web.

What’s weird is you can scrub back through the airing if you press watch from start, but can’t scrub back if you press watch live  No idea if it’s recording or not, grab folder gets emptied.

EDIT: New logs ZIP

I am seeing discrepancies in the schedules for the channel 5 group of channels. I have reported the problem to our provider.

I can see corrections in the next set of data that we will ingest - which hopefully should be by tomorrow evening

I can now see Traffic Cops at 9PM tomorrow. No NEW marker.

Also the Police Interceptors episode before Traffic Cops should be NEW too.

Maybe all three above will change by this evening’s ingest? :slightly_smiling_face:

It is unlikely now for the Traffic Cops and Police Interceptors airings to have the “New” indicator corrected in time.

There is still a chance for the channel 4 The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up to Cancer 21st April airing to be corrected.

Was thinking that, but thought I’d mention it in-case. Thanks

To add onto the above, it seems that scrubbing was using the file for the recording that literally just finished. Going back to the beginning of the “live” airing through Plex was around the beginning of the previous recording’s video file. Super weird, as both recordings were on the same channel so not sure why the 2nd failed.

@sa2000 Around the World by Train with Tony Robinson - Friday @ 9PM Channel 005, 105 should be NEW. Not too sure about the capitalised episode name either, but isn’t a problem.

Alongside the one tomorrow @ 8PM, there’s another one on 28th April @ 8PM Channel 4 that I think shouldn’t be new. It’s S1E1, but might be fixed in-time for then but thought I’d mention it.

I’ve now unfortunately had to switch to another DVR service. Sadly the provider had too many issues and was then missing recordings. I do hope sometime in the future we can return, as I’ve provided plenty of feedback previously for Plex DVR.

I do appreciate @sa2000 reporting issues I found to the provider!

Is there any way to tell my Plex Media Server to not import new content until the file has stopped being written to? My problem is that my new DVR software is writing into a folder, but my Plex Server is importing it and creating Video Preview Thumbnails of the very initial files’ contents. During the recording, Plex detects the increased video length but no extra thumbnails are generated. When the file has finished being written to, there’s thumbnails missing.

Only way currently to avoid this is to have the thumbnails generated during maintenance, but would like to have Scan my library automatically enabled & Generate video preview thumbnails set to as a scheduled task and when media is added so people can see the thumbnails right after the file has finished being written to.

Maybe Scan my library automatically & Run a partial scan when changes are detected both individually need to wait until a file has finished being written to for 10->30 secs? But even then as my new DVR software doesn’t record into separate show folders, partial scans even after 10->30 secs might import other files currently recording/writing to file just because the other one stopped being written to!? Would this be resolved if my software recorded Live TV into individual show folders?

Probably just a me issue :see_no_evil:

I am sorry to hear that. Hope to see you back soon

There is a 60 second delay after auto notification on windows but it is only 5 seconds on other platforms. Is the file not locked during writing ?

It is always best to download data into separate directory and then when ready to do file copy locally

Plex metadata matching:

Show on TheTVDB Police: Hour of Duty. Plex was looking for Police Hour of Duty and couldn’t find anything. Maybe it was missing the : because of the folder name? Adding the : found it instantly. Seems strange that it didn’t find anything similar without the :.

Seems to be better now that tv shows are recording into individual show folders. Plex doesn’t seem to import them until the file size isn’t increasing anymore. Not sure if they’re locked or not.

Suggestions:

Server addition behind the scenes to wait a certain amount of time for no activity on a file before importing, to avoid generating video preview thumbnails of only the beginning of a video file. As Plex doesn’t seem to go back and add more thumbnails after the fact. Also resolves issues that may occur when people don’t use the Plex recommended file structure for their TV/Movies. Issues like video preview thumbnails and other tasks that analyse the file on import, instead of just during maintenance.
This’d probably work alongside Scan my library automatically, Run a partial scan when changes are detected, Include music libraries in automatic updates & Scan my library periodically by seeing a new file, checking last modified date & time. If over 30secs/1 minute ago → import. If not, repeat. Most programs I’ve seen, default to 1 minute on the last modified time.
Kind of goes against automatically, but the description can mention the wait. Just would avoid issues with non-Plex recommended folder structures and rare cases in a correct structure.

Skip Intro like feature but for Commercial Detection. Allow Commercial Detection to be enabled on any library, then store timestamps for detected commercials instead of removing them from the video file.

In my case → new file gets written too → Plex waits X seconds after the file was last written to → Imports file + grabs metadata whilst generating video preview thumbnails and checking for commercials on the full video file.

Also regarding Skip Intro, seems odd to have only that feature for the Plex Pass owner instead of your Plex Home users too like other Pass features.

Just what I think.

Hello again, could you explain what a file being locked is during recording? They’ve asked what being locked means and if Plex won’t import the file while it’s locked? Thanks!

A file that is open would be locked not permitting other processes to rename it or move it until it is closed. The file should still be readable whilst it is open.

Thanks. I think that’s the problem then, probably shouldn’t be imported till it isn’t being written to anymore. Other programs like MCEBuddy wait until it’s finished being written to before importing.

Problem with Plex importing some content too early sometimes, is that it misses out on generating video preview thumbnails in my case and doesn’t seem to fill the gaps after. Probably could just wait until the file isn’t being written to for 30 seconds → 1 minute & resolve any further issues.

I probably have looked at logs already but I need a refresher.

Lets use right terminology. plex does not import media.

We need to establish this is the case. We have had reports of transcoder failures during video preview thumbnails generation for recorded media - so there could be different reasons why these are not in place

I’ll try reproduce in my new DVR softwares’ library without the Plex recommended file structure.

Sorry, but just seemed like the most appropriate at the time and couldn’t think of anything else…

Movies folder is just the movies files in one folder, no organisation by the recording software unfortunately. Basically not using any sort of Plex recommended folder structure.

Recorded 2 movies on separate software. 2nd finished at 12:06PM, if I remember correctly. Plex didn’t find the 1st movie until the 2nd movie finished recording. Would’ve expected the 1st to be found first when it finished, then the 2nd after it finished. Both generating thumbnails when they were finished being written to.

TV show folder, is more organised. ShowName\EpisodeFiles

Recorded a new TV show, so a new show folder was made. Plex found the new file as the new folder and file were initially made so video preview thumbnails were only generated for the beginning of the TV recording (13 seconds). Think this was around 19:59PM. As above would’ve expected Plex to wait until the file has finished being written to before showing in the library, so people can expect the show to be its’ full length with all preview thumbnails. The length of the show/file stopped updating on Plex at 32 minutes until the file stopped being written to, then changed to 62 minutes in length on Plex.

Hope this explains my situation currently. Thanks
