DVR no longer operational, cannot setup new DVR

We need to tidy up your Plex Media Server setup first. I can see two instances of Plex Media Server running - one as a service or scheduled task and one as a normal user process

I can see a Plex Media Server launch at Mar 05, 2021 09:43:55 as a user process running to 09:54:10 when server was shut down

I can also see a Plex Media Server process run as a service launched in parallel at Mar 05, 2021 09:44:08

So we need to get this out of the way and have a clean setup with either PMS run as service or starts automatically on user login

Once this is corrected - then please run with debug logging enabled - do not flip flopping logging setting and then after a fresh launch of Plex Media Server with debug logging already enabled - go through DELETE DVR and DVR discovery again and and try to go through DVR Setup. If there is a problem, get a screenshot and logs zip

Also indicate which DVR is being used. Is it the old HD Homerun Dual which is managed by Plex Tuner Service or the current models which are directly managed by Plex Media Server. Also which IP address this DVR has

Thanks

May be there was some database corruption.

If it happens again - please capture server logs and run with debug logging enabled

Thanks

Thanks for the heads up about two instances running. I’ll be more vigilent. Running as a full service would be a big help.

I’m currently running with only a late model HDHomerun. I deleted the earlier model device, since Plex would often run this first and its reception was sub-par. There was no need anymore to capture four streams.

To reiterate a post yesterday, all is well at the moment after renaming 3 files and forcing a rebuild. Thanks.

Until there is a Plex solution for this - what a lot of Plex users are using is this service wrapper (including myself) - PMS as a service - General / Tips, Tricks & How-Tos - Plex Forum

(Be aware that there are issues with hardware transcoding when running as a service - including possible crashes)

Hi @sa2000, getting slightly different issues now DVR not disappearing completely but unable to record, and see guide.

Deleting the DVR and recreating rectifies the problem

As described in: https://forums.plex.tv/t/live-tv-dvr-missing-the-device-is-in-in-use-with-existing-dvr/691158/6

Went into Databases subdirectory, backed up the directory, and the deleted all files that begin with tv.plex.providers.epg*

That appears to have deleted my DVR within Plex, but kept my DVR Schedule. I then easily re-added the DVR, and now it works (again). We’ll see how long that lasts…

Does anyone at Plex actually know what is going on with the quad-TV users? Is this device simply not compatible anymore? Both of my custom built Win 10 machines have stopped working now and I have spent a considerable amount of time trying to get these working again. Up until the provider change they did. Now they are extremely unstable. I can take it. Just tell me which hardware devices I need to buy that will actually stream live TV again. Please.

@bridjee could you check the windows event log (Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System] to see what was happening around this time

Mar 14, 2021 08:17:56.566 [14128] DEBUG - Request: [127.0.0.1:56890 (Loopback)] GET /:/prefs (9 live) Signed-in Token (bridjee)

Was windows being restarted around that time ?

May be it was the EPG database that was corrupt

Thanks @sa2000
Answering questions below.

I’ll have a crack at the database repair later and come back to you.

yes, I restarted the server to get services etc clean start.

The EPG was ok and I loaded into NEXTPVR without issue, the same EPG file was used when DVR was recreated and loaded fine.

hi @sa2000 have done all the above recommended steps and still getting issues, issues loading the channels.

refreshing the guide did not address the issue, rebooting and refreshing the guide did not address the issue, however by adding a previously deselected channel the guide appeared again. This was done using the same xml file as what appear

Thanks for the feedback. I would need logs captured when it did not work and again when it did work to look into this

Hi @sa2000

Have reset several times now with no luck. Is there another place to send the logs the upload feature is failing. Keep getting this message
Connection refused - connect(2) for “453ef0097f9c.tiefighter02.sd.sjc5.discourse.cloud” port 16726

I have changed from XML file for guide to the plex provider and the issue remains.

This thread has drifted to include Guide issues, but mine is the same as the original issue (although I’ve had plenty of guide issues).

HDHomerun Extend disappeared from Plex (Version 1.23.1.4528). Scanning to add it again finds nothing even though it has always appeared immediately. Entering the IP manually finds it instantly, shows the proper channels, looks up the guide, and then throws the error “This device is in use with an existing DVR” (which it is not - other than this Plex server). No way to proceed. Log and screenshot added.

Shutdown Plex, make sure no other copies are running and delete these 3 files:

BDofMSP, Tiberius is correct. Delete these 3 files while Plex is down. Allow a bit of time after Plex comes up for it to rebuild.

I shut down Plex and tried to delete the files and they were locked. I checked Task Manager and there was still an instance of plex server and a host of child processes running. This was curious because I’ve rebooted the machine three times in the last few hours and the only way Plex starts is automatically on login - I haven’t opened it any other way.

Anyway, once they were killed this solution worked. I VERY much appreciate the quick help that I received here. Thank you very much.

I’d love any insights into how this occurred so I can better manage this in the future. These files were from 5/13, 5/16, and today.

Thanks
BD

I would dig into the multiple copies of Plex running as this will undoubtedly cause issues down the line.

By default, Windows has a setting to automatically restart certain apps and this should be disabled if you are explicitly starting Plex with an auto login. Check the sign-in options to see if it is set to auto restart apps.

I will dig into that a bit. Thanks for the guidance. I appreciate your time.
