Every Android app update on Pixel 4 XL renames device to "Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook"

Yeah, I know how you feel, but for the Plex team this appears to not be uncommon. Not all issues get ignored, but certainly some do. I’m part of another thread for an issue where Alexa loop mode doesn’t work. It was reported in August 2019 and no one from Plex even responded to it…you’d think that would be easy to test and deal with. So, at least you got some response on this issue.

8.3.0.18653 (cbeeca1b) reset the name to “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”.

8.3.0.18715 (c7f30692) reset the name to “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”.

Update to 8.3.0.18775 (90ba2915) seems to have preserved the “Pixel 4 XL” name!

Let’s see what happens on the next app update!

I totally get that: I understand both the frustration and also the personal sense of responsibility and pride that comes with working in a customer-facing role.

But I also know firsthand how overwhelming it might be…

For context: I’m a product manager working on Alexa Tech Docs: My team owns the technical documentation for third-party developers wanting to build Alexa devices and skills, and we get a lot of feedback and inquiries across numerous channels. Frankly, the volume is so high that it would be a full-time job (or several full-time jobs!) just to acknowledge, respond to, and follow up on all the various reports coming in, and that’s just on the technical documentation itself, let alone the underlying technology! And we are definitely not staffed for that.

I’m sure that there are various things that we might speculate that Plex employees could be doing better. And we may even be right about some of those things. But, boy, oh boy, the forums here are inundated with so many threads and comments that I can’t imagine how a company of about 100 people total could really stay on top of all that in a completely thorough way.

I don’t say all that to devalue or denigrate your frustration: I think it’s totally understandable and personally relatable! But I guess that I’m just grateful for the effort that @jesusmc (and other Plex employees) have already put in to an issue affecting so few people and which amounts to a personal fixation for me.

Sadly, update to 8.3.0.18867 (5bf61719) reset the name to “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”. I wonder what was different about this version that it reset the name, while 8.3.0.18775 didn’t.

And now, update to 8.3.0.18893 (14279def) seems to have preserved the “Pixel 4 XL” name!

Let’s see what happens on the next app update!

This is playing with my emotions!

Update to 8.3.0.18912 (14279def) reset the name to “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”.

Update to 8.3.1.19088 (fe1982e8) preserved the name “Pixel 4 XL”… Let’s see what happens next time!

Update to 8.4.0.19098 (997517fa) preserved the name “Pixel 4 XL”! That’s two in a row! This is looking promising.

Update to 8.4.0.19157 (12b73823) preserved the name “Pixel 4 XL”! That’s three in a row now! I’m inclined to mark this as solved.

@jesusmc: What do you think?

And I’m pleased to report that, once more, the update (to 8.4.0.19219 (b0f074c8)) preserved “Pixel 4 XL”. I’m going to mark my comment about update to 8.3.1.19088 as the solution.

Nope. Update to 8.4.0.19231 (31f66898) reset the name to “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”. :frowning:

One potentially relevant factor I hadn’t thought of before:

My Plex server was (and continues to be) offline during the app update.

This time, my Plex server was online, but the network connection on my phone was very slow. I’m beginning to wonder whether there’s some race condition that involves establishing a connection with the Plex server.

Plex server was online, and the network connection was very strong. This is starting to support my speculation that this is a race condition…
