Plex server is online, and my connection to it locally is pretty strong. I’m not sure what to make of that, since strictly, it’s not enough to rule out a race condition, but it’s interesting all the same.
Update to 8.5.0.19642 (bdf62378) preserved the name “Pixel 4 XL”.
Again, local connection to the server is pretty strong.
I’m wondering if this is finally resolved. @jesusmc?
Update to 8.5.0.19697 (bdf62378) reset the name to “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”.

@pawn: Did you happen to observe any instances of updates where your custom name (like my “Pixel 4 XL” that I kept setting myself) was preserved? If so, have you gleaned any pattern for when it happens or not? Or is it consistent with the version numbers I listed in previous comments?
I haven’t really noticed any pattern because I wasn’t really watching that closely, since you have been doing such a good job of keeping track of it! 
I have only been updating when the Google Play Store offers an update, so I did notice times where you said it reverted the name, but mine did not; however, I wasn’t on the same version that you reported and there was no Play Store update.
This past time, however, I did have an update to the same version as you and it did revert, just like you.
I also only update when there’s an update in the Google Play Store, but I’m in the beta program, so assuming you’re not, I guess you and I overlap when there’s a stable release!
Update to 8.5.1.19748 (a53a4272) preserved the name “Pixel 4 XL”.
Local connection to the server was not very strong, and syncing was paused.
I just updated to 8.5.1.19778 and it maintained my “Pixel 4a” name, I’ll have to check my Pixel 4 XL when I get home.
Update to 8.5.1.19778 (2c9485c3) reset the name to “Intel Apollo Lake Chromebook”.
It reverted on my Pixel 4 XL.
