My apologies, I thought the “work in progress” referred to the current opensubtitles plugin and not to implementing the new API. I didn’t see anything about that but I may have missed it. In any case, glad to hear!
And when can we expect a fix for this issue?
I am using this feature a lot (as I am a Swedish user…), and most movies don’t come with Swesubs…
We never commit to a date, sorry
All I can say it that we are working on it, and will deliver before the old API is shut down
I guess that means this year, as the API will shut down end 2023.
I honestly don’t get why we are still talking about the official date for the old API shutting down.
For me (and the others in this thread), it’s not working right now…
I can confirm it has been going on since 2018 on my server, only 5 or 6 times it’d worked in 5 years.
I’m just wondering why we are forced to use Opensubtitles as the source to get subtitles automatically and not let us choose ourselfs which site we wanna get it from.
Having the same recurring issues of subtitles failing to load or even when the subtitles are added, upon playing, the subtitles will vanish after displaying for a few minutes. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Even when not watching a video of a foreign language, oftentimes, I prefer subtitles to ensure I catch every spoken word and reading also forces me to pay more attention to the dialog.
With videos in a foreign language, I have to resort to downloading the subtitle as a separate file (yes often from Opensubtitles, as it’s the predominant site with subs) then playing the video directly on the tv with the video file and subtitle file in a USB flashdrive that is plugged into the tv.
Any perspective on when thi issue will be solved? The feature was working well until a few month ago. Now I have to download subtitles and time them via offset to match videos, with uncertain results…not pleasant.
We are working hard on this, but no ETA, sorry
Same problem - it works once or twice, and then stops - but it does come back after a few hours. This implies it is some sort of counter maybe?
If using the new library agents, and we are talking about OpenSubtitles on demand, please go here:
And if not, more info is needed
Plex Version 4.126.1
Platform: Synology
When I login as admin I can see the built-in subtitles to the video and I can download subtitles:

When I share the video, the user can see the built-in subtitles to the video but is unable to download additional subtitles with below error:
In the console logs I can see:

Happy to log it as a separate issue if this is not the correct thread.
Any ideas when this might be fixed?
We are in April 2024, still the issue of subtitles not downloading continues. I am getting “Failed to download subtitle.” for any file in any library. I have the latest server version in Windows 11, and this happens across clients (Google TV, iOS, Web).
- Plex Downloads Subtitle First Time
When you play a media file in Plex, the application is able to successfully download the subtitle the first time. - Error Message for Next Media
However, for the next media file you try to play, you encounter the “Failed to Download Subtitle” error message. - Restart Plex Media Player
To resolve this issue, you need to kill the Plex media player process and relaunch the application. - Successful Subtitle Download
After restarting Plex, the application is then able to successfully download the subtitle for the next media file from step 2.
Hi,
Any update about this “failed to download subtitles” issue?
I have the same problem for more than a year, running Plex 1.40.3.8555-7000 on a Synology NAS
Ah yes, another completely broken feature that was reported nearly a year ago. To be expected at this point I guess.
I’m having this exact same issue after just joining Plex and getting really excited about setting it all up - did pay for the pass but the subtitle thing is too annoying right now. Really disappointed to see this is a long time issue and there’s not even a solution in sight.
Thanks for the heads up.
Getting exact same issue as you when sharing a single movie - the user can’t download any other subtitles:
Temporary workaround: share your entire movie library instead. Now the user should be able to download the subtitles. That works for me, but is not a good solution.
