Just two cents regarding the Xfinity issue. My problem was not remote access, but was accessing files from the very PC that housed the server. I consistently got “unavailable”, but was consistently able to access my content from mobile devices (remote access). Turning off the Xfinity Advanced Security seems to have done the trick. I think cooltwou might still want to see what can be done about disabling the Xfinity software. Also, I wonder if this might be looked at a little more closely by those who are more able than I am to see if there is a better workaround than disabling the software intended to protect Comcast users from outside threats.
I am having the same issue as cooltwou with remote access being disabled and nothing i can find on this forum seems to help the situation
I don’t think you understood what I said about the Xfinity you have to be paying for the Xfinity X1 to cut features off with that and I am not paying for that so I am unable to cut that off
I think my main problem is this Cooley Home Network is currently unavailable and I don’t understand why this is and how do I tell if the server is running or not
Wow, that’s interesting. I thought it would only affect attempts made from the outside to access the server so that’s good to know. After looking into it more, it seems that you can allow access from an outside source after it is blocked, much like creating an exception in Windows firewall but I haven’t messed around with it yet.
I don’t think cooltwou has it because it only comes free with Gigabit unless you pay extra. There seems to be something entirely different going on there.
Ok, let’s take this one step at a time. If you already viewed the page I linked for you and you are absolutely certain that Plex Media Server is installed and your media has been added and it is set up correctly, first make sure your media server is running. There should be a Plex icon in your system tray in the lower right corner. If there is, your server is running. Right click on it and choose “Open Plex”. If Plex opens up in a browser window, you should see all of your media the way you organized it. From here, select any movie or TV show you’ve added and see if it will play or if it is showing as “Unavailable” in red at the top next to the name of the movie. If it doesn’t show as unavailable, try to play the media and see if it works. Do all of that first and let us know what happens. Please be as specific as possible about what you see and we’ll go from there.
Well the media was there & it played and I did a Port Forwarding on my router and that didn’t fix the problem of Plex finding my media sever with my media
I’m confused by this. Are you talking about remote access? It would seem that your Plex server is set up correctly at least as far as being able to watch your media inside your home. So the only problem that your experiencing now is that remote access is not connecting and no one, including yourself, is able to view your media away from your home, correct? Do you have friends or family sharing your library? If so, are any of them able to connect to your server and view your media? Please post a screenshot of your remote access window with your IP blacked out and also upload your logs. Anyone who can answer this will need them to solve it.
Well I don’t know how to load logs and I don’t know how to block out IP address and I was able to watch my media in the Plex sever on my laptop but not on the Fire TV or the PS4.
Also I did Port Forwarding but it said the Port is closed
Try reading this page to see if anything helps. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.
Well it shows my Fire TV as authorized devices and I login on the Plex TV website and it says unable to connect to”Cooley Home Media” Securely and I am not sure what that means.
I have another question the Web Browser I use has a VPN built into it could that be a problem
Do you actually help people fix problems because so far nothing I have been told here has fixed my problem yet
I am also getting a message that (Plex Media server name) is currently unavailable. This occured after I installed Plex on a new system and copied my program files from ```
%LOCALAPPDATA%Plex Media Server
@scottsiegel I don’t think your problem has any relation to cooltwou, if you would, please start a new thread (so we avoid 2 different conversations and confusion), please include what exactly you did, step by step, what OS, what plex version, etc.
@cooltwou lets start from scratch.
please explain in as much detail as you can, what your laptop hardware, what os, what version of plex server (your OP says 4.12.3 which is not a plex server version)
If necessary, please download and install the most current plex server version @ https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/
please understand plex SERVER is different from PLEX PLAYER.
so you are installing plex server on to your laptop, you should (or should have) run the installer and assuming you already ran through the setup wizard, there should be a small plex icon down by the clock on your task bar
click @ https://127.0.0.1:32400/manage/ and it should take you to your plex server admin.
from here you can add/edit/browse your video libraries.
if you have not added any libraries, you can click the + to add a movie or tv library.
the library setup wizard should prompt you for a path where your media files are.
are they on your laptop or on a nas or other storage ?
after you add your video paths and finish the library setup, it should start scanning your movie folder(s) and adding the content and metdata, from which you can browse and within the web browser.
once everything is working ON THE LAPTOP, then you try it from other devices IN your house.
make sure everything works in the house before worrying anything about remote.
if everything is working locally, then you can start testing from remote (use a cell phone on LTE is easiest).
if everything is working correctly, you should be able to access your plex server @ Plex Web from your home or remote location from any web browser.
I have a Windows 10 laptop it is a Dell Inspiron 3179.
In the Plex Media Sever I see in Plex Web in general this right here: 4.22.1 and under my home network name I see Version 1.18.5.2309
and the Plex on the Fire tv is 7.27.1.15203.
Now I have played a video in the Plex Web on my laptop and that worked just fine and I have all libraries already added.
Now in the remote access I don’t understand this at all: I see Private and Public IP Address but they are not the same and I don’t understand why that is.
Also in my Router app I did Port Forwarding with my laptop but for some reason the port said it was still closed.
Also in the Fire TV app I click on my network name and it says no connection and I have no idea what is causing that either because my Fire TV is hooked up with Ethernet cable but my Laptop is wireless only
Anybody going to help fix this problem because I am losing my patience here
Remote access is only necessary for devices outside your home.
Since you can access your server on the laptop, a set of logs would help.
- On the plex web desktop, go to Settings > General
- Enable Plex Media Server debug logging should be checked
- Enable Plex Media Server verbose logging should NOT be checked
- Restart Plex Server
- Go to Setting > Manage > Troubleshooting click on download logs
- Reply in this thread, drag and drop the zip file to it.
But I cannot access Plex other then my laptop on any other device I have no access
I do not see step 5 anywhere at all because I do not see manage in settings anywhere and you really did not explain in good detail on how to do that it seems like everything you said to is rushed with no explanation on how to find each step either and until I get that I cannot find a way to get the logs here
