I want to backup my Genre tags from one server and restore them onto a new server

I have a large server at home with several libraries and about 50,000 assess in about 12 libraries.

One of those libraries has 3000 of my own home videos. I entered a lot of tag´s into the genre field manually to improve searching and grouping of different types of clips.

Now I have moved that video onto a different server, I want to export the genre tags as there are too many to manually update.

I am aware that this information is stored in the database and I believe that it is possible but i need some pointers and a bit of help to get going.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

I also have over 3000 home videos with tags, collections and custom posters and backgrounds. I’d like to move these to a different server as well, so I could also use any help out there also.

The only thing you could do is to:

‘clone’ your server,
Thereby making sure that all media files are available on the new server under the same address/path name/drive letter as they were on the old server.

I strongly recommend you to clone the server onto the same platform/operating system type.
Crossing platforms (e.g. Windows -> Linux) is only for advanced users and requires additional editing of the database.

After you have cloned your server, edit the ‘advanced server config’ of the clone
and remove the following keys:

  • AnonymousMachineIdentifier
  • MachineIdentifier
  • ProcessedMachineIdentifier
  • PlexOnlineToken

On the new server, you can afterwards delete all those libraries which should only remain on the old server.

Thanks for that @OttoKerner , I use linux for almost everything so I have no problem with the operating system.

Which paths that need changing are you referring to? I have previously already tried a simply backup and restore but because my media libraries have different paths the new server would not start with the old database.

If it as simple that then I am happy. I will try @jelwell´s solution and see if that works for me.

The paths to your media files. I set a link above.

It should start anyway, because at startup time the paths to the media are not evaluated.

I cant remember, i´ll try it again and post the error back, i just remember it said something about paths
