Intros (extras) crashing Plex app - Android/Firesticks specifically

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#: latest

is anyone having issues with intros (extras) playing? For instance, a user tries to start a movie, and it begins to play, but then tries to start the intro, plex crashes, and the plex logo pops up and goes back to the home screen. I’ve seen this happen often, particularly on Android devices, like Firesticks. This has happened to at least 5 of my users. I’ve had to disable my intro trailers.

Same thing happened on all of my clients over the past few days. All Firestick 4K’s. I uninstalled, reinstalled, restarted, cleared cache and data, etc. Nothing cleared it up. Finally, I went into the Plex settings and reset the “play trailers before movie” setting from “0” to “1”. Selected a movie. Trailer played, my extra intro (Dolby Spheres) played, and the movie started and played fine. This worked both on my internal network, and my son’s remote connection at college. I would prefer not to have to have a trailer play in order for my extra intro to play, as it was working fine just last week. Guess I will try disabling the intros too. Server and client versions are up to date.

Now that I think about it… a lot of my users are using Firesticks, and it’s only the 4K versions that seem to be doing it. I have an NVIDIA Shield, and that’s the only Android device I’m aware of that’s not having this issue. Most of my users are on Firesticks.

Confirmed that removing the “movie pre-roll video” path from the “Extras” section in “Settings” also solves this issue for me on the Firestick 4K. I will try it on my Shield tomorrow. Definitely want to see this fixed as soon as possible.

Server Version 1.25.3.5409
Client Version 8.28.0.30077 (241173d0)

I can also confirm this, but instead of that, I just disabled playing cinema trailers for my libraries. That way I can leave the path since I have about 30 intros and didn’t feel like typing inputting them all over again.

Sorry, just got around to testing on my Shield. The pre-roll video works fine on the Shield, with or without theatrical trailers. Same client version as the Firesticks 8.28.0.30077 (241173d0). Is there a way to roll back to an earlier version of Plex on the Firestick so we can narrow down where the pre-roll problem started? @BigWheel

if you know how you can sideload an apk from the release announcement topic

https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-for-android/29115/last

Yeap, It started with the latest version 8.28.0. For the time being, I switched back to the previous version 8.27.2.

@BigWheel Downgraded to 8.27.2.29938 (4e119b4b) and everything is working as expected. Any thoughts on when this will be resolved in a new version? Thanks!

Here is the Reddit link I created for same Amazon Fire stick / Android Plex client issue. Please have a look guys. Thank you.

I’m hoping since it was a recent regressions we can figure out what recently changed that might have caused it but I can’t provide any exact ETA.

@gwiebel possible to get your Android logs from a firestick having issue.

Thanks for the logs, would you be able to try our new nightly build that includes a new demuxer? It will appear as a new application called Plex (Nightly) so won’t impact your current installation. You can install the app here: Android: New video demuxer for improved playback

I can do that. Probably won’t get to it until later this evening, but I will take a look. Thanks.

@sixones Had a few minutes and installed the nightly app version 8.29.0.30173-nightly (836197848). Same results. Logs attached.

Having the same issues on two Fire TV Box with latest Plex app. Have had to remove Pre-rolls for the time being.

Confirmed this is happening on my 4k Fire TV Cube. It wasnt doing this until my firestick just upgraded (the Plex app) today, now its broke as well.

Yeah… really annoyed. Lay down in bed and turn something on only to run into this issue.
