LG Smart TV (Check network Connection)

Server Version#:3.83.1
Player Version#:3.94.1
LG WebOS Software Version: 04.10.36

I have a LG SK8000 TV (2018 Model), which has started to give me issues on Plex since about 3-4 weeks ago.

You try to open the application and it just pauses for a while until you get the below pop-up:

Sometimes it even loads all the way and while you are browsing it pops up, or while watching a show.

The weird thing is that it doesn’t happen all the time. Multiple fixes include:

  1. Turning the TV off and on multiple times till it works.
  2. Exit the application and try again (least amount of success)
  3. Restarting the plex server application. (I think this isn’t the actual fix, as I have done a packet capture and the application doesn’t even talk to my server at this stage, it’s as if it tries to talk to some online plex ip/server and can’t reach it and remains stuck).

The plex application versions on the LG content seems quite old, even through the TV model is from last year.

PS. I am from South Africa, not sure if that plays a roll.
PS.S My PC residing on the same network and using the Windows Plex application doesn’t have any issues.

Any idea what’s happening?

is your TV connected wireless or with an utp-cable ??

Connected through ethernet, all other applications are working well (netflix/showmax/spotify etc.)

See this thread
.

Thanks, seems like the plex version is 3.94.1 (I will update the first post as well).

Any suggestions which might be causing this?

This is a total SWAG, but a couple of things to try:

From point 3 in your OP it seems like the app is having trouble communicating with the plex.tv servers. Netflix, et al work, so it appears your Internet connection is OK.

Possibly a DNS issue where the TV has trouble resolving plex.tv addresses?

Try using a public DNS such as Google - 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4.

Also, instead of turning the TV off/on multiple times, try turning it off and then disconnect the power for 15 - 20 seconds. Turning the TV off with the remote is more like a deep sleep than really removing power and doesn’t necessarily kill all running apps (my experience with my B7 OLED anyway…). Removing the power ensures the Plex app actually stops and reloads the next time you launch it.

On your TV Plex app go to settings/Manual server and add your Server LAN IP address and port

This seems like it did the trick.

I switched to using 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 as secondary away from my ISP’s DNS and haven’t had any issues since.

Thanks!

Seems that I spoke to soon, problem popped up again.

I have tried what @SE56 suggested and specified my server manually.

Let’s see.

Thanks so far for the help guys.

Issue still occurs even when I manually specified my server.

Feels less frequent than before the DNS and server changes, but it still occurs.

Any other ideas?

I’ve had the exact same issue over ethernet. I’ve tried the uninstall/powercycle/reinstall, changing DNS, with no luck. Strangely, over wifi it works properly every time.

My problems started around the same time as yours. Absolutely no issues prior to that.

Also having the same problem over wireless regardless of the DNS config.
TV LG C8.
Server Version 1.15.5.994

My solution is to now just plug out the TV, wait 2 minutes, plug it back in and voila it works.

Horrible solution, but I don’t know what else to try.

@cwazywabbit will try the WiFi part to see if it helps.

I am having the same issue, have tired wifi and wired and as you say all the other apps (netflix etc) don’t have this issue.

Did you find a solution?

I am also seeing the same problem “Check Network Connection…” frequently on my LG TV
43UK6540PTD
LG OS: 4.1.0
Plex for LG: 3.103.1

I have only been using a wired connection (wifi disabled)
to a local plex server (same local network).
I only ever get it when starting Plex, no other applications seem to trigger it,
and it usually takes several retries before it successfully connects.

  • Is there any way to get more info from the TV/Plex app (logs, etc) about what is happening?
  • What is the Plex app doing during startup that could trigger the error?

I should have more than enough bandwidth between my TV and my local plex server.
(Is there something that is latency sensitive in the Plex app, or TV?)

Thanks,
Ross

same issue here!
Any solution yet?

Hi Guys,

So I think I have found the issue, was a bit more complex from the get-go than I thought it would be.

My plex server and TV lives in two separate network ranges and for some kind of reason I had a weird dst-nat on the VLAN towards my Plex server.

When I removed this, all my troubles went away.

Hope this helps someone else, but it sounds very specific to my case.
