got same issue with LG WebOS and Plex app version 5.25.1. platform version 4.9.0

  • reset of wifi access point
  • access to plex server from PC / plex web client (from the same network) works fine

Yeah, I saw some article about this the other day. LG and a few other makers are using some older protocol or something isn’t properly encrypted/using a cipher strong enough. LG will need to fix this, but I don’t think they’re going to. I’ve been trying to look for the article but I can’t seem to find it. Will post here if I can dig it up. Plex on PC and elsewhere works just fine, not for LG + other affected TVs though.

Found it

On September 30, 2021, some older smart TVs (some LG, Vizio, Hisense, and other unsupported TV platforms) will no longer be able to use secure connections to communicate with Plex Media Servers. These devices are no longer supported by their manufacturers, and won’t be receiving an update needed to continue making secure connections to a personal server. You’re receiving this email because you’ve recently used a Plex app that may be affected by this change.

If your TV is on the same network as your Media Server, and you haven’t made changes to your secure connection settings, this change should have no impact on your experience.

If your smart TV app has trouble connecting to a Media Server after September 30th, please ensure that both the app and the server are set to allow insecure connections: On the TV app*, ensure that Settings -> Advanced -> Allow Insecure Connections is set to Always, and on the server, ensure that Settings -> Network -> Secure connections is set to Preferred.

Note that this configuration does allow for the possibility of unencrypted communication (over the internet, when playing remotely) between the TV app and the Media Server, but connections will remain secure for those apps and platforms that support them. To continue to stream securely, we encourage you to consider upgrading your Plex experience with one of several updated and affordable devices, such as Google Chromecast, Roku Express, or Amazon Fire TV Stick.

  • Note: on some older TV apps the equivalent setting can be found under Settings -> Main -> Allow fallback to insecure connections. This should be set to Always.

older tv’s lol my fathers is a 2021 65" webOS tv…but setting to “always” worked…

Yeah, again, not sure what allow insecure connections actually means. So use/enable at your own risk.

It is not related to the article. That for webos 2.0.
Webos 3.5 is pretty new model. Also the cert not yet expire when I post. So it is unrelated.

Something else.changed in plex server

It looks like this is possibly related to the LetsEncrypt root certificate expiring today, but there are many other people reporting similar issues over on this thread: PMS suddenly shows issues with remote access 9/30/2021 10AM EST

I’ve had the same issue starting later this evening for me, UTC-6 though.
Device Details:

  • LG 55SM8600PUA
  • webOS Version: 4.9.3-5380409
  • Software Version: 05.10.30 (not sure how this is different than webOS)
  • Plex App Version: 5.0.1

Yeah this is BS Plex! My TV also is only 2017 model with 3D, it was a $3k tv. I think you should patch your software until you can work with LG to get your issues resolved together so these tv’s can still work. If a 2021 tv is affected all LG tv’s are. Roll back your change, I was watching my friends server last night just fine and now I can’t connect, good thing I manually update my software, or I wouldn’t be able to connect to my own server in my house.

Same here. Remote server updated to 1.24.4.5081 last night, cannot connect to it as of this morning. Local server is fine

WebOS 5.60.15 recently updated
Plex App 5.0.1 updated April 2021
LG tv is only 3 years old

Looks like going to insecure connections always fixed the remote access problem though.

Insecure does not fix for me. I do not know if the remote server allow insecure connection but this is not suppose to be solution. Webos 3.5 listed as supported and it should be.

Same problem with my LG Oled C8. Suddenly not working. Setting server and TV to insecure works. Can’t LG just update? Or is it plex that have the responsibility for the app?

I am using OLED C7. it is same app version that having issue… I believe it is plex responsibility to update the app.

Same thing here, bought the LG TV a couple of weeks ago and plex worked fine until yesterday.

LG C9 running 05.10.25.

Plex stopped working yesterday, as did all downloads from the LG content store.

Now it started working for me!

Just called LG UK customer care, the agent I spoke to and his manager weren’t aware of the issue with Plex specifically, but have logged the matter and passed to head office.

They did mention other apps on their TV’s had stopped working today, so that feels like maybe LG need to update their root certificates too

No it does not. I got connection to 8 server and none of them work except my own which not using plex certificate.

Hey guys, I have the same issue on a LG OLED55C9PLA.
I found this post that instructs how to install certificates on a LG TV. My question is, what certificate should I install?

I have same issue on Samsung Smart TV, tizen 2.4 platform.

I was able to get it working by going to Settings->Advanced and setting allow insecure connection to ALWAYS.

it did not work for all my friends though…anyone here have luck with this workaround?
