Live TV EPG - The update you’ve been waiting for

thank you . Am I right in saying that will require a server update? i.e. should I stop trying to add the dvr functionality to plex until after a server update?

I just made the switch after seeing the in-plex message about it. After the switch, several channels for which guide data was previous available are not shown (at least not in the local grouping). Will these come along later?

Plex may not know about about the problem or which channels you are referring to. I personally would recommend filing a report here just to make sure they are

How do you tell if you are using the new guide? I did the dvr delete and recreate and all my shows are still recording. The original note seemed to indicate they would all be lost. So I am wondering if it really got the new guide.

Thanks! -Bill

The simplest is as follows as I think it applies for all countries:

If you are in the UK, like me, and want to be absolutely sure then this post will help.

If your lineup has a channel count in parenthesis then you’re on Gracenote.

No, you won’t require a server update.

Thanks for that. If you guys need any info from me about terrestrial television in Ireland or server logs or anything, PM me, I’ll help in any way I can

Thanks @l_escogriffe, once we get things sorted I’ll probably take you up on that offer!

So this means I am on Gracenote: image

And my listings only go to the end of the month… hence I though maybe I was still on the wretched Tivo guide.

With the new guide, you should get 2 weeks.

Bummer, on my other system that uses gracenote I have full guide thru Jan 3rd populated. And some channels are populated till the 4th @ 3:30pm.

It all depends where you are:-

Ref: TV Listings - Gracenote

“Local TV schedules for up to 21 days out of North America, and up to 14 days out of Latin America, Europe, APAC and the Middle East; listings updated frequently for all regions.”

No, I have less days on my Plex-Gracenote than I do on my SchedulesDirect-Gracenote.

…same location for both.

It’s even different by channel on my SD-Gracenote,

I can only assume that Plex cuts it at the shortest channel for consistency.

Maybe. Not a great idea though, especially considering you cannot set up a recording of a show if its not in the guide, so limiting down by 4~5 days is bad planning. I use SD on my other system. And been extremely happy with the guide, it just works, and the maybe two times there was a glitch in the guide in the last 5 years I emailed SD and they had it fixed the next morning.

Maybe @cire12 can confirm how many days we should be getting?

I use LiveTV/DVR more than anything and I appreciate you finding a way to continue built-in EPG/guide in the USA. I was worried when I saw the banner in my app today telling me to delete and recreate my DVR, so it’s a relief to see what’s happening now that I’ve read this thread and am up to speed.

I am getting the 14 days that Plex says we should get.

…but I got more with SchedulesDirect-Gracenote, but not for all channels.

Just and FYI for those who are missing channels. I live in Canada very close to Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY. When I setup the DVR again and put in my postal code, Gracenote only found 8 local channels (my tuner is picking up 57).

I tried again with a different postal code on the other side of town and it picked up 48 channels, which still wasn’t enough. So I chose a Buffalo,NY, USA zip code instead. Still missed a couple of channels but a lot better. What eventually worked for me was a Niagara Falls, NY zip code. Got 54 of the 57 channels (which works because the 3 missing in the guide are shopping channels, so who cares).

Since you brought this up it’s probably a good time to let you know that we are working on a project to address what we refer to internally as “The Buffalo Triangle Problem”. Where users reported that not only could they receive channels from their home DMA, but also found success receiving signals from Toronto, Rochester, and Erie.

Regardless of the name, the phenomenon is not unique to users in Buffalo, NY, users all over the globe live in Goldilocks zones that allow them to pick up signals from outside of their primary market. With TiVo we spent months and month (and months) requesting that they add these distant stations to hundreds of different lineups, to the point that it almost became someone’s full time job. This time around we need to take a different approach, which will come in the form of multi-lineup support.

During tuner setup you’ll enter in your home postal code as you naturally would. Plex will make it’s best effort to match the tuner channels to guide channels, as it does today, and you’re all set. However, if you have unmatched channels from distant markets that your tuner receives but your lineup does not account for you’ll be able to enter in a second (or third?!) postal code to retrieve additional lineups to match against. Not only will this allow you to resolve for this use case, but you’ll also be able to get more creative with your installations, like point two directional antennas in two different directions, connect them to two different tuners, and apply unique postal codes to each. Similarly users that might have both a CableCARD tuner and an OTA tuner will no longer be forced to choose between one lineup or the other.

All that to say, now that we’re on the verge of being freed from the previous provider we can finally get back to some of these types of enhancements that are long overdue. If you have questions let me know. (No, I don’t have an ETA that I can share.)
