Yes, we’re aware of search issues. Search in general will be getting quite a bit of attention in the coming year.
Some small progress. I finally heard from Plex. My missing channel report has been sent on to Gracenote. No ETA for fix, however.
I am able to receive 98 OTA TV channels at my location but can only get a listing of 50 and thats because i use a zip code that is 50 miles north of my location or i would only get 25 if i used my local zip code. If plex would allow more that one zip code to be used for the guide information that would allow me to fix the problem. If that was know before i bought the package that may have made a difference in my purchase.
I am going to delay switching over, with so much to record over the Christmas and New year period. It doesn’t currently solve my biggest problem of recording films that are split in two. I still occasionally forget to add enough buffer, and end up cursing.
Will the current guide stop working on January 1st? or will it have the 2 weeks guide it downloaded on the 31st December?
OK, color me confused.
It appears that in all the initial excitement of “oooh! beta!” all the talk was about “if you want to participate in the beta, you’ll have to delete your DVR and all your recordings, and re-create everything from scratch.”
Frankly, this is the first I’ve heard of switching guide providers (I’ve done live/DVR only since about August). I’ve had zero communication from Plex on any of this. So, question:
what is the intent for the average end user in this transition? Are we expected to do the same delete/recreate dance; if so, is there a deadline date for doing so; if so, will Plex communicate any of this, including instructions, to its end users?
I’m sitting tight for right now. This is all an evaluation for me, to see if I want to move from Windows Media Center. I’ve come to understand that Plex once used Gracenote, then switched to Tivo, and now is switching back again. If this becomes a science experiment task for its users every time this happens, and if it seems to happen regularly, that will tell the tale.
And for the record: in WMC I switched from the Tivo stuff that Windows shoved at us starting a few years ago, over to the Gracenote data as supplied by Schedules Direct. When I did so, it took about a minute and a half–and every one of my scheduled recordings remained intact. That’s how it should work.
Is that how it will work once this is out of beta? Has Plex figured out how to do this without forcing the customer to do the dance? Or has Plex at least figured out how to communicate this all with the end users? 'Cause if it’s going to happen January 1, the emails should have gone out by now–either warning us “pay attention,” or instructing us on how to avoid an empty guide.
The tap gets shut off on the 31st, so you will be able to float on whatever guide data your server already has loaded.
I notice there’s been a number of server updates in the last 10 days but no fix just yet for the postcode problem in Ireland. For what it’s worth, EPG data should be the same for anywhere in Ireland, it would not differ from postcode to postcode, I believe…
Thanks @l_escogriffe, we’re working on the problem now. It looks like we’ve found two national lineups (in the GBR directory of all places
) that aren’t associated with any postcode. So what you’re saying makes sense. I’ll let you know when I have more information, or when it’s fixed.
Formula 1 recordings are broken again. The server decides to overwrite or ignore practice 2 and qualifiers. It will record fp1, fp3, and the grand prix no issues. I think when two sessions (fp1-fp2 or fp3-qualis) occur on the same day, it ignores the second event. Happened each of the last two GP weekends on the new guide data. Please look into this, thank you!
Hi,
The current EPG will switch off at the end of the year. Sometime before then you will need to delete your DVR and recreate with the new EPG (should you wish to continue using Plex’s EPG).
The new EPG, whilst not perfect, is actually the same EPG Plex used before switching last summer to the disaster that is the current EPG. Plex realised their mistake and this is their return to the old/original one.
The reason this beta has been made available generally is that it is already significantly better that the current (outgoing) EPG.
Hope that helps.
OK, thanks for that.
So now an administrative question: was Plex ever going to alert its end users about this? Or was their plan simply to let them figure this out by osmosis?
Looks like users are getting a warning judging by this comment on reddit, so yes it looks like they are alerting their users.
I’m just a user like you. …you’ll need to get a Plex employee to answer that one…
@cire12 hey - when is the general announcement (I assume by email) to warn everyone about the EPG change at the end of the year?
That appears to be just a link back to this thread.
It’s linking to the reddit thread fine here.
yep, and the Reddit thread links straight back to this thread
[edit:] oh I see, you put that link in and the OP was referring to a pop-up. My mistake sorry.
Well, yeah as I pointed that user to this thread :). But my point was that users do seem to get a warning/announcement in their DVR settings.
I’m in Darwin, Australia. When Plex previously had Gracenote guide data I had it configured using the local postcode 0800. Now it wont let me use that, the Continue button stays greyed out. It works if I enter another Aus postcode e.g. Sydney’s 2000. Are we able to get a local 0800 feed back or is this now not available?
Please, Plex, I implore you–don’t expect that the entire user base is on Reddit or coming here. Or is reading your mind. It’s entirely by accident that I discovered this situation.
And now, believe it or not, after deleting and recreating the DVR and discovering that indeed it does NOT match up my old recordings with the new guide (and doesn’t delete them; they just sit there, useless), and discovering that there’s no way to schedule something that’s not in the guide, I actually had to do some searching about series return dates and put notes on my calendar to remind me to go in and schedule recordings.
The alternative to giving people warning is for their guide to go blank, forcing them to do something. Without any notice I probably would have deleted the DVR and moved on, figuring that it was just another failed science experiment in the tech world.
Maybe the tech world could start acting like responsible adults instead of kids in a garage. I’m not pointing only at Plex; it’s Google, Apple, Facetwit, etc. Samsung, too.
I just made the switch and seems fine. One issue I did notice: Previous setup, when asked for zip code, I put it my zip code which correctly selected the local listings for the channels we watch that happen to be ~40 miles away.
Today, after recreating the DVR and selecting my zip code, the local listings was not for this area. I went back and put in the zip code for the same area as the channels we watch. That worked.
